During the convention Milan Cartoomics 2017, Dynit, Italian licensor for Your Name, stated that the total gross for the movie in Italy is "around 700.000 €" (750.000 $) ;)

Good to know, and unfortunately, most totals are likely underestimated, so hopefully more updated figures are revealed over time. I'll include the updated total for Italy in next week's update.

OMG, so many updates

BATB is releasing today in JAPAN, hope it does well and looking forward to your list on OW records as well.

YN is probably going to add $10M - $15M more to its worldwide tally, that should take the total collection to $375 ($80 M + more than SA
thanks to China) and it'll be interesting to see if Shinkai can continue his reign with next film or not, surely everyone is having huge expectations from him.

Also, I think this might actually be the highest grossing Japanese film of the year, it's by the same director of the secret world of arrietty, the trailer looks promising.

Any predictions for Fate of the Furious? Can it match the ~$31 million total of Furious 7 or will it be more like F&F 6 ($20 million)?

Probably something between those two films. Furious 7 was probably the peak of the series, in my opinion, so I'm doubtful that Fate and the Furious can match its success.

Also, the Japanese film titles for the Furious films are much better, in my opinion, than their English titles:

Fate and the Furious = Wild Speed: ICE BREAK
Furious 7 = Wild Speed: SKY MISSION
Fast & Furious 6 = Wild Speed: EURO MISSION
Fast Five = Wild Speed: MEGA MAX
Fast & Furious = Wild Speed: MAX

I'm going to post the Weekend Forecast in an hour or two.

Beauty and the Beast debuts this weekend, and based on its pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it's looking at a very impressive opening as expected. I don't want to say a debut above ¥1 billion is a lock, the ticket sales don't suggest it quite yet, but it's definitely doable.

Beauty and the Beast debuts in Japan ahead of the Golden Week holiday period, one of the three busiest weeks of the entire year, and is looking to get started with a huge opening weekend, hopefully one that manages to exceed ¥1 billion.

In terms of pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it actually trails every recent ¥1 billion+ debut of the past few years, but it's also unlikely to be as "frontloaded" as any of them, so a ¥1 billion opening is possible. But, if it misses ¥1 billion and comes in at ¥900 million or so, do not be disappointed - it'd still be a very, very impressive debut.

There have been 5 Disney films debut above ¥1 billion in the past (in order of highest-to-lowest openings) -- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (¥1.94 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (¥1.47 billion), Alice in Wonderland (¥1.31 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (¥1.24 billion), and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (¥1.21 billion) -- so if it manages a ¥1 billion+ debut, it'll be in very good company since only Pirates 4 ended up missing the ¥10 billion milestone at the box office.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast performed very, very well on Saturday, and has probably assured that it'll achieve a debut above the ¥1 billion mark.

Here's how it compares to the five ¥1 billion debuts of the past few years, including last weekend's Detective Conan.

Saturday Results (Two-Thirds of Market) - ¥1 Billion+ Openers:
Tickets Sold/Available Tickets (% Capacity), [Theaters/Showings], Film Title
348,024/605,267 (57.4% capacity), [239/1,676], Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter (2017)
317,709/530,456 (59.9% capacity), [231/1,727], Yo-Kai Watch 2 (2015)
293,246/714,702 (41.0% capacity), [236/2,789], Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
289,656/530,905 (54.5% capacity), [230/1,502], Detective Conan: Darkest Nightmare (2016)
286,726/658,842 (43.5% capacity), [231/2,256], One Piece Film Gold (2016)
262,671/667,610 (39.3% capacity), [245/2,327], Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Its Saturday is lower than all the other ¥1 billion openers of the past few years, but it's still very impressive, and should come in around 800,000 admissions over the weekend frame (Alice in Wonderland sold 828,000, so that's the main target) if its Sunday is roughly on par with yesterday. It's hard to predict what its avg. ticket price will be (3D family films vary greatly), but even a low avg. ticket price should carry it above the ¥1 billion mark.

I'm thinking it'll debut with around ¥1.1 billion ($10 million), which makes it a ¥10 billion (~$90 million+) contender.

BatB did $22.5m OS and $13.7m domestic. I think it can do $1.15m from the holdovers so it needs another $130m-$150m from Japan. Given that Disney has been doing really well in Japan I think it can do half of what Frozen did there.

Already $1.1B at this moment so $1.15B (without Japan) or even more is doable. Still need 14 billion yen from Japan to surpass Frozen and claim the position of highest grossing musical film at worldwide boxoffice. I think it's hard because while Japan is not fond of Fate and Furious and Guardian of Galaxy, it may make BatB decline sharply weekly.

$1.1B is including the Japan opening but yes $1.15B Japan will still happen as it did another $10m from rest of the OS markets and domestic is still big enough. At this point it will do another $80m+ from Japan which would bring its total to just about $2b so it needs another $76m from domestic + rest of the world (which should be good for another $50m) or have an insanely huge $130m total from Japan to get past $2.76B mark of Frozen.

Beauty and the Beast debuts in Japan ahead of the Golden Week holiday period, one of the three busiest weeks of the entire year, and delivered an incredible opening weekend based on estimates.

Some highlights:

>4th Biggest Debut in the Month of April - list later.
>6th Biggest Debut for a Disney Film - list later.
>36th Film to Ever Exceed ¥1 Billion in its Debut - list later.

Any debut of this caliber is remarkable, especially being one week out from a major holiday period. A total over ¥10 billion ($90 million+) is never a lock this early on, but the mark is very much in sight since a multiplier less than 9 could get it there, and that shouldn't be too difficult with its release date.

>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter held quite well in its second weekend, better than the past few films, and easily delivers the biggest second weekend in the franchise history after achieving the biggest opening weekend in the franchise last weekend. Another total north of ¥6 billion ($55 million) is likely, but perhaps it can even reach ¥7 billion ($65 million) this year - this franchise has become a major force in recent years at the box office after nearly two decades of stagnant numbers.

I'll provide more analysis with the Weekend Actuals tomorrow/Tuesday.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Beauty and the Beast
Legs will definitely be strong; a multiplier near or above 10 isn't uncommon for a major, well-received, debut before a major holiday period.

There's a lot of Golden Week openers next week, as per usual for the time of year, but Beauty and the Beast will go unchallenged atop the box office and likely retain its #1 position throughout all of May and into June (May and June are typically dead months at the box office in Japan).

I'm also working on the All-Time Opening Weekend Charts.

I'm going to split the main chart up, and post two separate lists; one will be the overall All-Time Opening Weekends, and the other the All-Time "Modern" Opening Weekends.

Today's biggest opening weekends look "small", or "underwhelming", compared to opening weekends 10+ years ago, when they're just as impressive, so a more "modern" chart featuring more recent opening weekends will provide a fairer representation.

I mentioned in the past that in the early/mid-2000s that every major blockbuster had ample previews included into the opening weekends (sometimes an entire week, other times a day or two), so opening weekends in more recent years just can't compare because previews, largely, no longer happen in the market - and when they do, they haven't been included as part of opening weekends since 2010.
