That’s a fair price. Only being on Disney+ is weird but also acceptable. They have to make that $200M budget back somehow.

I won’t drop $30 (or $20, $10, etc...) on Mulan but gimme Soul for $30 now please.

And that's the reason why $37 is not acceptable

Disney has pumped hundreds of millions into these films. You can’t just put them up for the same price as Deep Blue Sea 3 (even though that looks great!) :funny:

Agreed still $37 is too steep.

I think this is the takeaway.

$37 for a family is mostly still cheaper than a trip to the cinema (parking, tickets, concessions).

And that extra $7 adds a lot more Disney+ value too, that I could really see Disney+ grow their subscribers substantially by this release.

Yes by that logic you can release literally any movie and charge even higher say $50 and it would be justified. Do we really think the entire family would be interested in this? And is this movie exclusively for families?

Well, it's a family film, I think that much is clear.

And sure, they'll probably miss out on a bunch of single cinema goers that are not going to pay this, but I think that portion of the target group is not that large.

I also think this wouldn't have been that huge of a hit when getting to cinemas anyway, I wouldn't have put it over $150m, so they're probably getting the maximum return with it, especially considering a wide release would probably be impossible the rest of the year.

Also Disney is going to be able to keep a larger cut instead of when it would have gone to cinemas, so I think they'll come out pretty well, but let's see.

This discussion was not about profit in VOD vs theaters so I wouldn't take that in my points going forward.

Imagine the potential of loosing many families if you charge too much specially in this dwindling economy. If we take $150m as baseline in US theaters it will definitely not make that much in VOD regardless but with this steep price it might end up loosing more families. At the end of the day the animated Mulan is already available at price of $7 along with many more Disney titles.

Alright, well in my eyes the price is not that steep but perhaps I'm looking at it wrong. I'm not sure in which way you imagine they would lose families, maybe people won't rent the film, but surely people won't quit D+ because of this. Maybe you could argue that at a lower price point they could get more eyes on the film, but I feel Disney did their research and the results are expected to be pretty optimal.

Wonder how this will work? I don't want my kids accidentally clicking on Mulan and me being charged $30. Hopefully there is some kind of PIN system or pay screen block.

I agree they won't lose existing audience but I'm talking about new customers. For them they'll have to pay $37 for Mulan... at home. Might not be sweet deal to enter D +if they have to keep paying $30 for all future Disney movies.

I wonder if they will try and bundle it. Anybody with Verizon got a full year free trial and that is going to be running out soon. So let’s say you get Mulan + Disney, Hulu and ESPN for a year at $100? Maybe that is too little but I bet it is near.

Patience may save you money. Pretty sure the movie will be on Disney+ at no additional charge in a year.

Think $30 is a bit steep. $20 would've gotten a lot of people to do it but then again it probably would've led Disney doing this more for better or worse.

If, say 5 million subscribers do this that's $150m. 10 million would be $300m, which would be a win. So we'll see. Black Widow doing the same thing would mean this works.

Agreed with i.hope that you can just wait it out. I think it will be only 6 months before the movie is available at cheaper price on D+

Also yes something like $20 was still acceptable to me, at the end of the day you are still not watching this in theaters so there is no point comparing it to paying for theatrical experience.

I mean at least you own the movie. It's not just a rental.

But I think it should also simultaneously release in the theaters that are open, which will be quite a few. If you have a family then D+ is probably the way to go. But for, say, one person wanting to see it that doesn't mind risking going to a theater then it would be much cheaper to do it that way.

I don't really care either way though as it's not a movie I'm personally interested in. Unless it gets great reviews then I'll probably give it a watch. Not going to pay $30 for it though. Now if it were Promising Young Woman or something I'd pay that for that. :P

They'll probably do the same with Black Widow in time for the Christmas break. But at $39.99.

The Alamo Drafthouse website has Saint Maud listed for September 25th. I wonder if that's the new release date. They really don't have much to lose with this one so may as well release it.

Deadline saying exhibitors are anticipating a release date change for WW1984... honestly at this point just take a December date. Move Dune to the summer.

I think Dune stays where it is. It’s potential is far less than WW84, thus the risk is far less. You don’t need to depend on families, who are least likely to show up, the diehards can just carry it for a few weeks before shipping off to VOD right in time for Oscar season.

Wonder Woman belongs in the summer .

Wonder Woman moves to Christmas 2020. I think it's a good move. Now we don't even know how the Fall/Winter will go but please God let this work out

Dune skews heavily male, WW a very wide audience. I don't see a problem with them opening close together. Bummer I have to wait longer for WW, but should be a great Christmas box office.
