Hostiles is having one of those silly Oscar-qualifying releases, which means it will make nothing at the box office....UNLESS it gets awards attention. But at this time it looks unlikely.

Gore Verbinski isn't a household name like producers seem to want him to be. And it's not for lack of trying. Every film he makes they make a big deal about letting people know it's from "Visionary Director Gore Verbinski" (or some other exaggerated title), and I bet most people don't have the foggiest who the hell he is. He hasn't had that huge word-of-mouth hit or successive hits yet that a director needs in order to become a household name. He directed the first three Pirates films, but people just see them as "made by Disney". Nobody cares about the director of franchise films like that, unless it's Michael Bay or The Wachowski Brothers. And then he made The Lone Ranger, which flopped, and was seen more as a Johnny Depp vehicle (another reason why nobody cared about Verbinski directing Pirates), and then A Cure for Wellness which also flopped. He seems to be in that stage in his career when his name SHOULD mean something, and his choices prove that, but his name means diddley-squat. He's kind of like Guillermo Del Toro in that regard. Nobody cares about the films they make, but there is an underlying notion that we should, and studios are trying to make them happen.

Del Toro atleast has more unique films on his resume, that's probably why he has fans in the industry. I dont get Gorr Verbinski though.

Pan's Labyrinth is unique, I'll give you that, but the rest are taken from other sources, no? I don't understand why Del Toro is revered. Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, Hellboy, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army ... come on, he isn't the next Spielberg. Those are not classic films. They're average, lukewarmly received niche films. Not to mention all the projects that he's started but never finished, or rumoured to be attached to and never gone through with. The guy is a joke.

Well all of those films, besides Pacific Rim, have a romantic gothic style that nobody else really uses. He projects what he feels when he reads a Lovecraft story or watches an old monster movie. It makes his movies feel authentic, warm and magical. That's why he has earned the season pass from me, and why I'll be at The Shape of Water Day Oneish despite not being very impressed by the trailer.

And the Dwayne-Jason spin-off will come out in 2019, thus diluting the brand so that the ninth film will probably struggle to reach $200m.

On the plus side: Justin Lin's deal for FF 9 and 10 seems to be done as he did a Facebook live appearance with Vin Diesel to talk about the next two films. Jordana Brewster will be back as well, which is problematic from a storytelling perspective but it does mean they can shoehorn in a bunch of Paul Walker-exploitation.

I do wonder if they'd ever recast.

I know they think they're doing a good thing by getting him back, but I feel it will have a "same old, same old" impact. This franchise would benefit from having a different director each time, changing it up, making it fresh each time, kind of like the Mission: Impossible franchise did (though that's also stagnated now they seem to be staying with McQuarrie). FF9 and FF10 will just be carbon copies of FF8 and FF7. And I don't believe people will forever be fooled by Paul Walker exploitation. That was a thing around FF7 but that's forgotten now. It will no longer produce an uptick in ticket sales. To be honest, they'd be better off stirring this Dwayne-Mark rivalry.

I think Lin is the best choice by a mile. He's already reinvented the series once and his time away from the series (since 2013) will probably be an asset in terms of formulating a new approach.

So basically we've gone: drag racing/street crime movie (1-4), team heist movie (5, 6) and then 7 and 8 have essentially been spy thrillers in the James Bond mold. I'm genuinely curious to see what's next.

I think not but everything these days gets a sequel and the first one was made super cheap and did really well so why not try again.

No surprise, but Polaroid has been pulled from Thanksgiving week and is TBD in 2018. Now the only wide Thanksgiving opener is Coco. Yawn.

Lol. It'll never get released. I should have known, but I put it as the answer to which film will lose the most amount of cinemas in MGKC's game.
