Gore Verbinski isn't a household name like producers seem to want him to be. And it's not for lack of trying. Every film he makes they make a big deal about letting people know it's from "Visionary Director Gore Verbinski" (or some other exaggerated title), and I bet most people don't have the foggiest who the hell he is. He hasn't had that huge word-of-mouth hit or successive hits yet that a director needs in order to become a household name. He directed the first three Pirates films, but people just see them as "made by Disney". Nobody cares about the director of franchise films like that, unless it's Michael Bay or The Wachowski Brothers. And then he made The Lone Ranger, which flopped, and was seen more as a Johnny Depp vehicle (another reason why nobody cared about Verbinski directing Pirates), and then A Cure for Wellness which also flopped. He seems to be in that stage in his career when his name SHOULD mean something, and his choices prove that, but his name means diddley-squat. He's kind of like Guillermo Del Toro in that regard. Nobody cares about the films they make, but there is an underlying notion that we should, and studios are trying to make them happen.

And the Dwayne-Jason spin-off will come out in 2019, thus diluting the brand so that the ninth film will probably struggle to reach $200m.

That means no Coogler, but still cool news.
