DH2 will have hardly any worldwide appeal

Daddy's Home made over $90m in non-US markets. ;)

Yeah, I'm not sure if that counts as hardly or not for this film.

Almost $100m doesn't count? 38% of its box office doesn't count? C'mon...

Yeah, it seems not bad, pretty good actually. I expect DH2 not to decrease overseas, so a worldwide total close to 200m would be in play making it's budget justifieable. I think MOE will end up as the more profitable film anyway.

It has a cast loaded with stars. Can't imagine Mel Gibson is cheap, even if he hasn't had a hit as an actor in a while.

While true but MOE seems to have an all star cast which I don't presume would be cheap in itself. So it feels to be the better budget of the two movies.

"All star cast" but most of them are washed up or old, including Johnny Depp. Daisy Ridley is a "new/rising star" but I can't imagine she commands that much at this stage.

It's the amount of actors. Also I don't think DH2's additions are expansive.

It will be interesting, as with every movie to know, what paychecks all the primary players get. I wish there was a site like hoopshype around for actors.

I don't think there's huge paychecks in DH2, but considering the success of DH, Wahlberg and Ferrell probably were able to demand an increase. Gibson and Litgow, are getting some of their best pay among recent roles, but I don't think it'll be a lot in itself (they're replaceable).

BUT the first Daddy's Home cost the same without Gibson or Lithgow. Not sure why they'd spend that on an original. It was a bit risky. It did pay off though.

Justice League- 300m
Wonder-20m
The Star-20m

JL budget is huge, bigger than it should be since BvS didnt cross 1 bill, however it had extensive reshoots so i understand why.
Wonder and The Star are fine.

Jesus. So it will make a loss at the worldwide box office. I'm assuming that $300m does not include marketing. What a disaster.

Post subject:  Re: Production Budgets

Yeah those reshoots are most likely the reason for that HUGE budget. I wonder if it was really worth it, specially because its looking like it won't get great reviews in the end.

Good for The Wonder and The Star they both should make enough domestically to make a profit for studios after home-media sales.

LMAO after marketing Justice League probably cost $450m. It will def need $1b+ to break even and it might not even make it to $800m. What a disaster.

Is JL the most expensive film on a per minute basis (110m) ever?

Post subject:  Re: Production Budgets

They will probably release an ultimate edition that doubles the length of the film. I bet there is loads of Aquaman footage that was cut from the main film.

I'm waiting for the extended edition it should be better than theatrical release for sure.

It was pretty foolish for Warner Bros to spend so much money on JL, especially after seeing how BvS turned out, but maybe they were thinking it would improve much more OS. Given the lackluster numbers so far there is no way this is going break even for them. It needed to at least hit $1 billion to somewhat recover with a production budget of $300M+ and that's not even including marketing which also has to be insanely high.

I think break even is around $900m. That's double a $450m production/marketing cost. But I don't think this will make it to $900m in theaters. They will probably still break even thanks to TV rights, home video sales/rentals, toy merchandise, and all the other stuff attached to these big franchise movies.

To some degree, they hoped the inclusion and subsequent marketing of WW would justify the budget.

Author:  Jack Sparrow [ Fri Nov 17, 2017 11:43 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Production Budgets

I think $900m would be most likely enough but given the domestic performance I don't think this is reaching much higher than $600m WW total so another $200m+ from home media sales seems a long ask.

Not bad for Roman but its doing terrible and the mixed reviews won't help much.

Yea I was thinking $900-$1b. I think WB will take a sizable loss even after auxiliary revenue (dvd, merch, write-offs, distribution deals, etc) are factored in. Should probably limit the scope of Solo Batman down to Batman Begins levels. No more than $100m for production. Wonder Woman's proven success notwithstanding.

Surprised that no OS numbers have been posted after its OW. It's most likely not acting up as a BIG movie everywhere as well.
