Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
Rolling Thunder wrote: Tracking has this at $140m+ right now. I just don't see it beating Dory, seems overly aggressive. Not so sure it's overly aggressive. This will truly appeal to both adults and children and will have massive family play since there hasn't been a big animated title for a while. Also, the superhero genre is far more popular now than it was when the first Incredibles came out, so that will help some too. Only 5 animated films have made 400M+ at the domestic box office. I think this will join that group, and I for one hope it tops them all because I just don't think Dory and Shrek 2 deserve the top two spots. Why this might not happen... Jurassic World 2 opening the following week will hurt it some, and Hotel Transylvania 3 a month later is the only other major animated film of the summer and could cut off it's late legs.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
Not counting Peter Rabbit, there hasn't been a $100M+ animated grosser since Coco half a year ago, and the last one before that was Despicable Me 3! So that's gonna help this a lot. Also, for years now many people I know have bemoaned that amidst all of these Pixar sequels, The Incredibles is the only one that has really deserved one, being in a genre that thrives on continued adventures, so I think that's gonna help it a lot as well. And I think it's also just one of the most beloved Pixar films, period. Topping Dory's opening still seems a bit optimistic, and I would be extremely impressed if it happens, but I don't think I would be completely surprised.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
People have been waiting for the Incredibles sequel for a LONG time. It's literally the only Pixar sequel people wanted (after Toy Story 3). It's gonna be huge.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
I think it could go higher, especially if Solo disappoints. The original is iconic and beloved.

Solo's opening will have no impact on Incredibles.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
You have to look at these things in extremes. Imagine if Solo made $1m in its opening weekend. It completely bombed. That would effectively mean another whole weekend without a huge new release. So you'd probably agree that Incredibles 2 would benefit from that, right? Well, Solo won't completely bomb. But it will be seen by a LOT less people than you would expect of a Memorial Day blockbuster. So it's the same logic, just a varying degree of it. So actually Solo under-performing will obviously have an impact on Incredibles 2. Families that didn't go to the cinema this weekend to see Solo will be more eager to go out to the cinema come 15th June when Incredibles 2 is released (especially if Solo doesn't satisfy). Who's to say how much it will impact, but it will have an impact. To say it will have "no impact" is just ignorance.

I'm surprised that you're coming up with this logic. Most of the times I'm at the other end of this conversation

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
Well, this scenario is always at play. You have to acknowledge it even if you don't want to. If you had said "Solo's opening will have little impact on Incredibles", I would not have posted, because you would've been more or less correct. But to say it will have no impact is wrong.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
I agree there will be some "minor" impact but to say that Incredibles will overperform because of now Solo's failure is wrong which you now seem to support. Also nitpicking could have been done on a sentence prior to mine but whatever.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
I do not believe it's nitpicking. I more believe that it will aid The Incredibles 2's over-performance than have a minor impact.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
This seems ripe for disappointment to me relative to expectations. I have far and away the lowest prediction for it in MGKC's game; I believe it will go sub-300m. The fourteen-year gap is enormous, and I feel, as Algren alluded to, the online sense of the first film being hyper-beloved (Finding Nemo-level beloved) is inflated because it appeals so directly and strongly to fanboy sweet spots.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
After seeing how much tracking overshot both DP2 and Solo I'm very cautious about believing any of these high early numbers.

Re: The Incredibles 2 predictions
Unlike Solo, there aren't a litany of online signs suggesting that tracking is way off the mark. The first teaser is at 82 million views, way above anything this year save for Avengers.

The last 300m animated film was The Secret Life of Pets almost 2 years ago! The Incredibles won't miss 300m, David, you silly devil's advocate!
