hitch takes the Number 1 spot for the weekend with $8million or about £4.3million... nailed that one

'Hitch' Knots Up Top Spot Overseas
Sunday March 13 6:45 PM ET

Sony Pictures Releasing International was starry-eyed this weekend after "Hitch" continued to woo audiences, easily claiming the No. 1 spot at the international boxoffice.

Fox's "Robots" made its way off the assembly line to well-oiled openings in Mexico and Asia.

British lovers danced to the tune of pied piper "Hitch" this weekend, where according to estimates the romantic comedy opened to a massive $8 million, including previews. This represents a 40% market share and an excellent screen average of $11,283, even on a super-wide 709 screens release pattern.

2nd biggest march opening ever!!

14 The Life aquatic 113,485 -59
15 Racing stripes 97,107 -51

Great start for Hitch, second biggest opening of the year, and second biggest opening ever in March. Should be on its way to an impressive £15-£17million with decent word of mouth. Hostage opened solidly, its gross looks weak compared to Hitch's but it would have been enough to take the number one spot last weekend. Also good opening for The Chorus, i really loved this heartwarming film and i'm glad to see it opened well with the third best screen average of the weekend. As Mansonmyers said next weekend will be huge, i'll post a full preview later in the week.

2005 films to date (£):

1 Meet the fockers 27,892,636
2 Ocean's 12 12,260,471
3 Closer 8,300,848
4 The Aviator 8,191,424
5 White noise 6,452,286
6 The Magic roundabout 5,692,742
7 Racing stripes 5,562,401
8 Spongebob squarepants movie 5,364,336
9 Team america:World police 4,912,868
10 Million dollar baby 4,793,265
11 Hitch 4,309,540
12 Shall we dance 3,545,971
13 Hide and seek 3,321,053
14 Sideways 3,213,134
15 Son of the mask 3,178,461
16 Alexander 2,721,904
17 Are we there yet? 2,435,770
18 Vera drake 1,991,743
19 Ray 1,987,861
20 Assault on precinct 13 1,987,518

Hitch lands at number 11 for the year already and should be in the top 3 by the end of next weekend and will be the third film of the year to break £10million and eventually £15million+ a feat only 11 films achieved last year. It has a shot at ending the year in the top ten, but will need a good multiplier. The upcoming Easter break should help it out, but there will be strong competition from next weekend. Fockers looks set to fall just short of £30million and will finish off at around number 30 all time, just ahead of Pirates of the Carribean, Shrek and Spiderman 2.

2005 Multipliers:
*Only films opening in more than 100 theatres counted.

1 Million dollar baby 5.96
2 Laura's star 5.78
3 The Aviator 5.30
4 Closer 5.29
5 Racing stripes 4.85
6 Son of the mask 4.38
7 A Very long engagement 4.37
8 Spongebob squarepants movie 4.28
9 Ray 4.10
10 Creep 3.85
11 The Magic roundabout 3.63
12 Ocean's 12 3.61
13 White noise 3.61
14 Meet the fockers 3.52
15 Shall we dance 3.28
16 Vaniy fair 3.24
17 Team america:World police 3.22
18 First daughter 2.84
19 Are we there yet? 2.74
20 Assault on precinct 13 2.65
21 Coach carter 2.65
22 The Life aquatic with steve zissou 2.64
23 Alexander 2.27
24 In good company 2.12
25 Hide and seek 2.08
26 Boogeyman 1.94
27 Elektra 1.84
28 Hotel rewanda 1.83
29 Spanglish 1.73
30 Ladder 49 1.71
31 Harold and kumar get the munchies 1.70
32 The Flight of the phoenix 1.69
33 Hitch 1.00
34 Hostage 1.00

Million Dollar Baby takes advantage of the Oscar boost and takes the number 1 multiplier of the year from Laura's Star (thank god). M$B got an 80% boost last weekend and dropped 47% this weekend to stay in the top ten for another week. Elektra did not make a 2 multiplier in the UK, which is incredibly bad considering multipliers seem to be higher here than in the US, it seems this film just wasn't popular anywhere!

Phew! big update, looking forward to a great and unpredictable weekend coming up with Robots and Constantine battling it out with the second weekend of Hitch..... can't wait!

M$B bloody deserves it. It BLOODY rocked....seriously kicked my arse with surprises.

I thought it looked shite, and it was one of the best films in recent memory.

Definately the best movie so far this year: cause it was released 2005 in the Uk.

The Ring, Amityville Horror and House Of Wax are strong contenders....am so hyped.

'Hitch' keeps grasp on int'l boxoffice

SYDNEY -- "National Treasure" found gold in Japan, "The Ring Two" bared its teeth, "Robots" melted in the face of fine weather across Europe, and "Hitch" continued to seduce international audiences this weekend in the lead up to Easter vacations. "Hitch" continued its dreamy run at the foreign boxoffice. The romantic comedy was No. 1 for the third week with an estimated weekend cume of $23 million from 48 territories on a wide 5,160 prints. The cume of $98 million likely will top $100 million Monday. The French fell hard for "Hitch," giving it a No. 1 debut with an ardent $4.4 million from 569 screens. In the United Kingdom, "Hitch" enticed the British in its second week despite sunny post-winter weather. The Will Smith starrer was again the top film with an estimated $4.3 million from 709 prints, a drop of 33%, for a cume of $15.5 million to date. The U.K. opening of "Constantine" was battling "Robots," for the second spot as of press time.

Source

If this is true then Hitch stayed at number 1 with approx £2million weekend. Which means both Robots and Constantine took under £2million for the weekend. That's not too disappointing for Constantine which i thought would get around £2-3million, but AWFUL for Robots. Ice Age opened to over £3million in 2002 and that is one of the least succesful of the big CGI movies in the UK and Shark Tale opened with £7.5million last year. At least it should have good legs with the easter holidays coming up and the kids being off school, but i doubt it can get to £10million..... way below expectations.

Shocking weekend!!!

'Hitch' Keeps Grasp on International Box Office
Mon March 21, 2005 10:08 AM GMT-05:00

In the United Kingdom, "Hitch" enticed the British in its second week despite sunny post-winter weather. The Will Smith starrer was again the top film, with an estimated $4.3 million from 709 prints -- a drop of 33% -- for a cume of $15.5 million. Preliminary figures showed a tight battle for second place between "Constantine," in its U.K. bow, and "Robots," in its second week.

COUNTING ON EASTER

"Robots" distributor 20th Century Fox was disappointed by the film's results, similar to United States figures, which are tracking only 75% of the returns for the company's 3-D animated hit "Ice Age." Results are expected to improve, however, once school holidays kick in this week. Weekend results of $16.8 million brought the cume across 31 territories to $21.2 million.

In openings, "Robots" made $2.5 million from 868 screens in Germany, $415,000 from 110 in Austria, $1.9 million from 425 in Spain, an excellent $1.1 million from 275 in Russia, a solid $780,000 from 423 in Brazil and $399,000 from 113 in Sweden.

Well that confirms it then, really poor for Robots accross Europe.

3 Constantine WB 2,098,074 NEW
4 Hostage Ent 569,530 -29
5 Pooh's heffalump movie BV 160,736 NEW
6 Boogeyman UIP 157,421 -59
7 Meet the fockers UIP 148,882 -51
8 Hotel rewanda Ent 104,917 -47
9 Darkness BV 102,154 NEW
10 The Chorus Pathe 93,893 -29

13 Shall we dance? BV 88,824 -42
14 Hide and seek Fox 88,312 -63
15 5X2 UGC 72,621 NEW

Overall not quite so bad for Robots, but still a disappointing number compared to other similar movies. Should have good legs though with the upcoming holidays. Decent opening for Constantine, and great to see The Chrous in the top ten  one other mention for Hostage, great drop for the genre.

I didn't even realise that Darkness opened last weekend.... hopefully will be going to see it tonight.

That is seriously crap for Pooh's Heffalump movie!

This weekend is a bit boring for me, not really interested in Miss Congeniality or Valiant, i think Valiant will take the weekend though.

Roll on next Thursday when i'll finally see The Ring 2, thats all i'm interested in right now, hope it does big numbers here.

Ani 'Robots' Conquers Int'l B.o.
Monday March 28 8:36 PM ET

Hitch continues its ardent squeeze on the foreign boxoffice and made an estimated $16.6 million from 5,000 prints in 54 territories, boosting the cume to $125 million.

The romantic comedy held No. 1 in Britain in its fourth frame on 4,700 screens with about $3 million, down 30%, for a U.K. cume of $21.2 million.

The comedy bowed with a fabulous $2.48 million from 381 in the United Kingdom, behind "Robots" and "Hitch."

Source

So Hitch held the number one spot? Robots was number one last week, and i really don't see how Robots would have dropped more than Hitch with it being Easter Holidays and no kids are at school. No mention of Valiant either... The report was wrong last week and i'm inclined to think it's wrong again. Actuals will be out late on weds/thu due to the holidays, so we'll have to see then.

Box Office Hitched Again

Will Smith reclaims top spot as new releases fail to launch
30 March 2005

It wasn't a great Easter weekend at the box office, and we suspect that we know why. We believe that large swathes of the country were too busy digesting huge quantities of chocolate to venture to their local picture house, and that even the smell of popcorn threatened to cause upsets in already over-full stomachs. Still, the crowds on holiday did mean that most of the films dropped more slowly than usual, and a crop of new releases were in with a chance.

Hitch took the top spot back from Robots, with a weekend total of £1.66 million. That means that the Will Smith rom-com has taken a very respectable £11.16 million in four weeks, and with only a 26% drop on last week, it could be around for some time to come. Robots, meanwhile, is still doing well, with £1.48 this week for a total of £5.21 million in two weeks. Having said that, a 44% drop on its first week suggests that this won't have quite the green, slimy but terribly long legs that something like Shrek displayed.

The new releases fared slightly less well. Miss Congeniality 2 opened in third place with £1.3 million – rather less than the first instalment, which made £1.87 million when it opened on the same date four years ago. Valiant, the animated World War II pigeon adventure, opened disappointingly in fourth place with £1.1 million. Perhaps film-goers, like Ken Livingstone and limestone buildings, just aren't big fans of pigeons.

Further down the list, Melinda and Melinda took £129,000 on 53 screens, with a respectable screen average of £2,439, and Maria Full of Grace, on 24 screens, took £84,000, buoyed considerably by lead actress Maria Sandino Moreno's Oscar nomination and glowing reviews.

Constantine dropped 53% in its second week, taking a mere £983,000 for a total of £4.38 million after two weeks. Possibly demonology and Easter don't mix that well – hey, who knew? Bruce Willis' Hostage continues to under-perform, with only £460,000 this weekend and £2.77 million after three weeks. We can only assume that there simply weren't enough scenes with Bruce in a vest.

Pooh's Heffalump Movie was another under-achiever, with only £190,000 in its second week and a tiny screen average of £464 (Robots, by way of comparison, managed £3,035). The teenie-targeted film does face a lot of competition from other cartoons this week, however, and this was always going to make most of its money on video.

Meet The Fockers continues to loiter in the top ten, in ninth place in its ninth week of release with a total now of £28.4 million – and it's still dropping slowly. In contrast, Boogeyman has fallen to number ten in four weeks, with a total of only £2.1 million in that time. Rounding out the top 15, The Chorus took another £80,000 in its third week; people are still going to see Are We There Yet? which took £74,000 and has £2.7 million overall; Million Dollar Baby is actually a £5.2 million dollar baby, taking another £73,000 after 11 weeks, and Hotel Rwanda managed another £70,000 in fifteenth place.

Next week sees Travolta and (our good friend) The Rock in Be Cool, Naomi Watts in The Ring 2 and a look at Hitler's final days in Downfall.

Source

Hitch £1,660,000
Robots £1,480,000
Miss Congeniality 2 £1,300,000
Valiant £1,100,000

Valiant's gross is seriusly bad  , i thought Robots' gross was a disappointment, this is truly bad and doesn't bode well for a big gross in the US. Great for Hitch though, and can't wait for the Ring 2 this weekend

Lovely...

Valiant dosen't look that bad; its a big thing for the UK film industry that im not really into but you have to give it cred nonetheless.

If Valiant flopped in the UK, then it is really going to bomb in the US, because Valiant has a lot of British voice actors, correct?

Yeah i think it was aimed at the UK market, unless the voices are re-done with US actors (as shrek 2 and robots were with uk actors in some parts) it's not looking good.

14 Million dollar baby 72,927 -18
15 Hotel rwanda 70,336 -33

Bit of a harsh drop for Constantine but i suppose expected for the genre, Valiant is just SO disappointing. Pooh's heffalump movie increases with the kids holidays and should have a really good muliplier like Laura's Star. An amzing 9th week in the top ten for Fockers, and nice to see a good drop for Million Dollar Baby, which finally made it over £5million total.

Million Dollar Baby takes a clear lead at the top with a multiplier of 6.42, and should be one of the best of the year. How on earth Son Of The Mask managed 4.43 for seventh place is just beyond me, the people of the UK should be ashamed! Nice to see a horror in the top ten (Creep at number 10) and it looks like Flight of the Phoenix, Ladder 49, Spanglish & Harold and Kumar will all join Elektra in not managing a multiplier of 2.

Looks like Fockers opening will remain unchallenged until Episode III is released. The Ring 2 should make an impression in the top ten this weekend though, possibly top 5?
