Amazing multiplier for Valiant already, not really quite sure why its that good though, i still haven't heard anyone that as liked it.

Looks like the chart will be dominated by kids films throughout the year, as Poohs Heffalump movie jumps to number 1, knocking off Laura's Star. Valiant is up to 4th already and could top the chart in a few weeks time.

'Interpreter' speaks to int'l boxoffice

"The Interpreter" opened No. 1 in Britain with an estimated $3.3 million from 367 dates -- 22% ahead of "The Amityville Horror" -- with a 22% market share.

Decent opening for The Interpreter. Kidman has always been very popular in UK and her films usually do very well there (think Moulin Rouge and The Others). The WoM should be good on this one, so I expect at least around £6,000,000 by the end of its run, but might get to £8,000,000+

Yeah, but what is interpreter rated over there compared to Amityville?? Over here in the U.S, The Interpreter is PG-13 if I'm not mistaken VS Amityville's R-Rating which will have a less larger opening.. I really thought the R-Rating for Amityville wouldn't be a factor in it's box office, but I do think now that it had a signifcant factor in not opening as high then say a PG-13 Horror would.. The 3 times I saw Amityville, the audience was mostly an older crowd with virtually no one under 17(Thank God) and no talking, no cell phones going off.. It was actually very pleasant to take a break from those annoyances while watching a horror movie....

Actuals:

The Interpreter fell from estimates (£1.8M) And actually had a bigger theatre count than AMITYVILLE. The gap between the two openers was a mere £250,000. Helped by more screens and better reviews.

Amityville Horror only opened £18,000 behind 2003's TEXAS CHAINSAW. However, TCM was rated 18, and AMITYVILLE is only a 15....allowing more people to see it.

AMITYVILLE should finish with around £4M and INTERPRETER with about £6M.

Guess Who, Beauty Shop and Cursed open next weekend.

THE RING TWO's total is now £4,878,853 in 3 weeks. Nice.

Amityville is a 15, Interpreter is a 12. The ratings do not really matter in this case because, i really doubt many 12 year olds would be going to see "The Interpreter"; This one seems more like movie which attracts an older audience, who chose this over Amityville. :wink:

INTERPRETER had a bigger screen count....if only by 30 odd screens.

It was also had a smaller rating of 12A...so anyone over 12 can see the movie, and anyone under 12 can see it with an adult.

AMITYVILLE was 15. Which meant ONLY people over 15 can see the movie. No matter if they have a parent or not.


So yeah....More screens and a smaller BBFC certificate seperated INTERP from AMITY by a mere £250,000.

It does mean that, but do you think many 12year olds/with parents actually went to see this? I think not.

Amityville Horror falls just -30% to $1.8M.
Interpreter -23% to $2.3M.

Guess Who had a 3rd Place Entry with $1.4M.

GREAT holds for Amityville and the Interpreter, i guess no big openers helped with the low drops.

Spanglish was a flat out bomb, whilst Elektra had an OK opening but a quick decline.

Overall a quiet week that lacked a big opener, perhaps the quiet before the storm of HItchikers and xXx2 next week. Benefitting most from the lack of openers were last weeks new films with excellent drops of 24% and 34% respectively for The Interpreter and Amityville. The Wedding Date surprised with the strongest opening at number 3 ahead of Guess Who and should have decent legs in the weeks to come. The best drop of the week went to Downfall, which is having a great run in the UK and could be headed for £2million+ which would be a great result.

Cursed ended the run of succesful horrors in the UK just as it did in the US with an opening just outside the top ten. Opening on a fairly wide 297 screens it disappointed with just a £699 screen average.

Looks good for Interpreter. Should hold until hitchhiker's comes out. Hitchhikers is going to have the best showing in U.K. out of any country, including the states. Hige following there of course. But I don't see anything else really getting in Interpreters way. It will have a long run I'm pretty sure...great legs. Longer even than Nicole's actually.

Haha for CURSED....no advertising caused it to bomb, bad. I seen NO adverts. not tv spots, radio spots, bus stop posters, billboards, not even magazine ads, or newspaper ads.

Hmmm i've heard nothing but good things about it, and i don't see much romantic comedy competition for a good few weeks. I think it'll have a decent multiplier, nothing spectacular, but decent.
