Before anybody jumps on me for making a thread like this let me explain. 70mil is quite impressive, but why couldnt it get to 100mil and beyond? The movie was probably one of the most well recieved movies of the year ( it has a A- on Yahoo and 8.1 on IMDb ) yet it still had drops of around 40% each week, was it that the BO was just over saturated with movies or that people just didnt wanna see it no matter the wom?

Nothing went wrong. Not enough people were interested in it.

Ray was a very successful film, but it was somewhat fromloaded due to the hype surrounding it (yes, it was there) and the fact that urban flicks (this is somewhat of an urban flick) are usually frontloaded. If it gets nominated for Best Picture, expect a rerelease and it mght even hit $85-90 million then.

I think it did okay. Nothing was really expected for this to be big.

Wont happen, they decided to go to Dvd early ( Feb 1 ) and make more profit with that then just rerelease it on the big screen.

What was the multiplier? 3.5? That isn't terrible. But it's coming out Feb. 1st? That is awfully rushed. You have some points, needn't worry there. But, I don't think this would ever appeal to a mass audience anyway. WOM can't carry a movie all the time.

I'm surprised it didn't. After a great opening and great PTA like that, plus the excellent WOM and hype, I was almost positive it would have great legs pushing it past $100 million. Just didn't happen, though.

It's fairly straight-forward:

I jinxed it.

It was released at an odd time to release this sort of film, but it still opened pretty decently.
then the influx of all the huge animated films and the start of the Oscar shuffle kinda downplayed it.

It still had an incredible run, 40% drops are nothing to complain about, anything under that would be more than awesome.

I think one of the problems was the theatre drop. In the month that Oscar buzz builds the most (December), Ray needed to keep its theatre count high. Also granted it never really hit a high theatre count, it may be one of the reasons why it maxed out where it did.

I think if it kept a theatre count of 1,200+ or at least 1,000+ all throughout December and a bump in the count after nods, it could have easily gone up to $85 million (those winter break weekdays would have helped it alot)

There is a high likelyhood of Ray being announced as Best Picture contendor. Didn't Lost in Translation get a pretty big re-release like 2 weeks before its DVD... and didn't it make a decent amount too?

Considering the Oscar nominations are announced January 25, the studio behind Ray would have time to make a decision to postpone the video release if it scored some nominations. And, yes, I think Lost in Translation did make some post-Oscarnom money.

Easy answer.

Ray's superpowers suck.
