This is turning out to be a fantastic year for not only opening weekends, but amazingly, for subsequent weekends as well. The most remarkable thing is that this year has given us some incredible weekend grosses for films in their second, third, and fourth weekends. Huge openers like Shrek 2 and The Passion held up very well after their openings; The Incredibles seems to join them as well. Regarding Opening Weekends exclusively, we have had quite some nice numbers raking up: $100 m+ : 1 $90 m+ : 2 $80 m+ : 4 $70 m+ : 5 $60 m+ : 6 $50 m+ : 10 $40 m+ : 12 $35 m+ : 15 $30 m+ : 16 $25 m+ : 22 $20 m+ : 40 $17 m+ : 49 $15 m+ : 54 $12 m+ : 63 $10 m+ : 68 $9 m+ : 74 $8 m+ : 81 $7 m+ : 86 $6 m+ : 98 $5 m+ : 106 There is unusual concentration in the $70m+ group; any of those opening weekends barely half a decade ago would have given the films the top opening of the year. Adding to the greatness of the feat, both Passion and Shrek 2 were Wednesday openers, taking some weight off the weekend. This means films held up well enough this year for non-opening weekends to account for 33% of $20m+ openings. In fact, if you look at the Percentage for which non-Opening weekends accounted for within a range: $100 m+ : 0.00% $90 m+ : 0.00% $80 m+ : 0.00% $70 m+ : 16.67% $60 m+ : 14.29% $50 m+ : 23.08% $40 m+ : 25.00% $35 m+ : 25.00% $30 m+ : 33.33% $25 m+ : 31.25% $20 m+ : 33.33% $17 m+ : 37.97% $15 m+ : 36.47% $12 m+ : 44.74% $10 m+ : 52.45% $9 m+ : 52.56% $8 m+ : 55.74% $7 m+ : 58.85% $6 m+ : 60.80% $5 m+ : 63.70% You can see that 1 in 3 $30m+ weekends was not an opening. When we go up the ranges, the percentages are still remarkably high; 25% of $40m+ weekends are holdovers. With Thanksgiving and holidays coming up, expect films to have not only some mighty openings, but great holds as well. In particular, the last two weeks of the year should give us some wonderful numbers.
