Post subject:  First weekend ever with two +40m openers?
Based on the Yahoo review numbers up to this point, I think it's very possible. Both National Treasure and Spongebob always did seem to have blockbuster potential to me, even if there were some doubts for each. So, do you think it might happen?

In any case, a weekend like this is inevitable with the way opening weekends keep increasing.

This thread will either look really smart, or really dumb with the numbers tomorrow. :wink:

This same weekend in 1999 had two 30+ million openers for the first time. So it is not entirely unrealistic.

I agree. It could be possible. From the looks of things, National Treasure and Spongebob are both heading for $30 million+ weekends, and that's on the low end. It's gonna be a big weekend.

it seems possible for these two to open to that much, but in reality i think NT will be in the mid 30's, while Sponge bob will be closer to 45-50. Didn't we get 2 $40+ openers this weekend 2 years back with Die another day and HP2?

It won't happen. I just don't think so.

However, if both Fantastic Four and War of the Worls stick with their release dates (which they most likely won't) it will occur.

No. Die Another Day opened a week after Harry Potter, though on that weekend, both were over $40 million, but Harry Potter wasn't an opener that weekend, so it doesn't count. :wink:

I do remember the wekeend of Sleepy Hollow/Die Another Day..it was exactly five years ago actually...but it didn't have such a strong movie like The Incredibles dominating the box office, nor did it have a strong women's movie like Bridget Jones that could potentially cut down the number of mothers bringing their kids to the movies. From what I hear both movies are doing decently so far, but I can't imagine both of them doing more than $30 million.

I don't how they are doing rest of the country, these two movies have been doing well here. I have been here since July. This is the most people I have seen at this theater. The thing is this theater does not even have The Incredibles. That is being shown in another theater a mile away.

I hope both of them get 40+. I think 30+ is almost a lock for these two.

I agree, both are locks for 30m at this point. 40m for both is very likely. At my theater, it is easily the best weekend I've ever seen. Of all the times I've been there I've never seen it that packed. National Treasure was actually doing better then I, Robot, The Bourne Supremacy and The Incredibles did on their opening days. :shock:

We've had only 4 previous occasions where 2 films opened both with $30m+ during the exact same weekend:


Minority Report $35,677,125

And btw, we've never had 3 $30m+ films in one weekend- ever!

We did get one weekend with 3 $25m+ films, and it was this year:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban $93,687,367
Shrek 2 $37,931,716
The Day After Tomorrow $27,869,665


Unless Incredibles really tumbles (unlikely), 2004 will have 2 weekends with 3 $25m+ films and could get another one next weekend. Though, I expect Alexander to (hopefully) flop.

If National Treasure does as well across the country as it did at my theater it will. :) But that's likely not to be the case. ;) I think it's possible that one of them can reach 50m; both have a shot based on the Yahoo numbers and the crowd reports I've seen. But I'm not sure how likely it is.

Well, we also had one weekend in which two films made over $50m (Memorial Day)...so...I don't think it's completely out of the question. There's an opportunity for The Incredibles to increase next week (Thanksgiving Weekend) but I am expecting it to drop 35-40 percent.

DP07, is there a chance of a $20m weekend for Bridget Jones?

Imagine...
National Treasure - $50m
Spongebob - $41m
The Incredibles - $28m
Bridget Jones - $20m

That'd be an interesting weekend, eh? ;)

Yes, this reminds me of Memorial Day Weekend. The Day After Tomorrow won Friday against Shrek 2, both higher than anyone thought, then Shrek 2 went on to win Saturday and Sunday.

I'm losing confidence in Bridget doing 20 million. I think that 500 theaters weekend will affect this one.

Well, we do have two 30m openers. First time in over a year. Not a bad weekend.

Anyway, July fourth weekend next year will do it IMO. The Fantastic Four or War of the Worlds will probably move. However, the one that remains will open with 40m, and I believe Chicken Little will as well.

I really hope Incredibles pulls through on this one :)


Next weekend, maybe (just maybe), we could see 5 $20m+ films, tying another record.

Yup. I expect it to make about $21-22 for the 3-day weekend.
