Post subject:  HIGH TENSION-- (Americans Don't Like Dubbing )
Lions Gate's NC-17 horror (foreign-language) movie--"High Tension" will open wide on 6/3/05.


"High Tension" will be second NC-17 movie that receive a wide release treatment (first one is "Showgirls"), so I think this movie deserve a thread.

I think that the NC-17 rating will help it. It should attract many hardcore horror fans with the promise that it will show things you couldn't see in an R rated film.

Are you sure it is getting a "wide" release? Most theaters will not show a movie that is rated NC-17 (other than art houses). I would be very surprised if it opened in more than 500-600 theaters.

At any rate, I think the NC-17 rating will both help and hinder it. It should attract more hard-core horror fans, but at the same time it won't be able to play in as many theaters and also will be avoided by some people due to the rating.

My early prediction would therefore be:

$3.5 million opening (based on 600 theaters)
$9 million overall

This movie is one of the only movies that were rated NC-17 in the USA just because of the violence. This will sure interest some people, especially the hardcore horror fans.

However, though, most theatres don't play NC-17 movies and the lack of theatres will surely hurt this movie somewhat. Therefore here are my predictions:

Opening weekend - $4.1 million

Total gross - $10.8 million

Nationwide, according to John Fithian, president of the North American Assn. of Theater Owners, only one major theater company refuses to play NC-17 movies (he would not provide the chain's name, but Carmike is one family-oriented chains that often refuses to play NC-17 films). He adds the caveat that "all of the other theater owners will say no to certain films that they feel are wrong for their markets."

Still, he maintains, "our general policy is that we support NC-17 films and want to see more of them."

His support, however, is often tempered by leasing agreements with the prudish real estate companies who own the malls where many of these theaters are located. That means that while the theater owners have no policy against an NC-17 film, the mall owners do. One example of this is San Francisco's arthouse Embarcadero Theaters.

Not only is this a great film that will benefit from good WOM, but I think this is the rare case where a NC-17 rating will help it. It's the only film to ever be rated NC-17 for violence alone, and I think that will get a lot of people interested in it outside of just the horror community. I think it will be a sleeper hit this summer.

I read that too. However, I am curious about one thing... Wasn't Evil Dead rated NC-17 for violence as well? :?

I don't think it means High Tension will bomb. One of them will move. I still don't understand why LG didin't stick with the Valentines release date. It was perfect.

Oh. I hadn't heard about that. Well, that's not really direct competiton for HT, though. I just thought the Valentines release date was perfect because of the plot of the movie.

This release change will help HOUSE OF WAX.


It was in amoungst WHITE NOISE, BOOGEMAN, HIDE AND SEEK, CURSED, CONSTANTINE, AMITYVILLE and RING TWO.

So, it's gross will be helped, and now has a better chance at Not bombing,

High Tension has one of the creepiest trailer Ive seen this year especially with Sonic Youth's remake of the Carpenter's song. It looks pretty much like Saw
