Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (04/21-22)
(C)2018 青山剛昌/名探偵コナン製作委員会Weekend Actuals (04/21-22)01 (01) ¥820,184,900 ($7.6 million), -37%, ¥3,233,128,800 ($30.0 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK2 02 (---) ¥367,837,100 ($3.4 million), 0, ¥474,413,200 ($4.4 million), Ready Player One (Warner Bros.) The twenty-second film in the long-running franchise is now tracking 17% ahead of last year's film, which puts it on course to reach the ¥8 billion ($75 million) milestone on 6 million+ admissions. It's very likely now to outgross Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and is setting the bar very high for the Summer tentpoles to compete against.
>Ready Player One debuted in a distant second place, but its debut is pretty good due to an absurd avg. ticket price of ¥1710 ($15.90) from strong 3D/IMAX shares, selling 214,973 admissions over the weekend frame across 745 screens, and 282,618 admissions since opening on Friday. This opening isn't the home-run start for Spielberg's latest, but with the Golden Week holidays coming up soon, it has a good chance of reaching the ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) mark, which is respectable.
>Coco remains steady in fourth place, and while the 46% decline is higher than expected given its prior weekend holds, it's still a bit better than other Spring animated releases from Disney/Pixar and Illumination which tend to drop 50% or more on this weekend each year. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone have become a bit more slim as a result of this hold, but it's still doable if it can benefit enough from Golden Week.
>Inuyakashi rounds out the Top 5 with a mediocre debut, selling just 90,101 admissions over the weekend across 313 screens, and 119,809 admissions since opening on Friday.
>Pacific Rim: Uprising experienced one of the worst second weekend holds I can remember for a major wide release (300+ theaters), and I'm willing to bet it's possibly in the Top 10 on that list. This disastrous hold even puts its ¥1 billion ($10 million) chances in jeopardy, meaning its multiplier might not reach even 3.5... truly a pathetic result following its decent debut (which was higher than the original!).
>The Greatest Showman holds strong in its tenth weekend of release, and I believe it'll be able to crawl over the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone before its incredible run comes to an end.

Incredible for Conan. Great to see TGS holding well and inside Top 10 before Golden Week. It won't loose an alarming rate of screens next week.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
After checking showtimes at various locations this weekend, Avengers: Infinity War and Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (despite being in its third week) appear to have similar showings/seating allocation over the weekend. Avengers has the advantage on Friday by occupying the biggest screens (the 500-700+ auditoriums) at the majority of locations, but Detective Conan is taking most of them back on Saturday and Sunday, as Golden Week begins.
If Detective Conan holds off the Avengers debut in its third weekend, it's possible it stays atop the box-office until late-May, but the May release schedule is weak as usual, so I'm not certain if anything next month can dethrone it either.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
From most OD's in other markets, it's broken OD records in many Asia markets and will likely outgross Ultron in most.
Europe, so far, seems to be on par with Ultron but far below Star Wars.
Since Japan is typically like Europe more so than Asia, where do you see Infinity War opening to and total in Yen?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
I'll have a Weekend Forecast posted tomorrow.
It obviously won't break any opening records of any kind (besides maybe biggest opening for an Avengers film), but Japan isn't a Marvel/DC market, so no surprise there. I'm sure it'll do well, early ticket sales are solid, and ultimately it'll probably open to and finish around the first two Avengers film.
I'll give it the slight edge over its predecessors right now due to the more creative marketing tie-ins with domestic properties (like My Hero Academia and Final Fantasy), and for having that "finale" factor.

So IW is getting over 200k less seatings than Conan on Saturday (328 914 vs 531 474). Is that any good and how does it compared to its predecessors ?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
Based on admissions so far in the 68%, I think it's going for about ¥275M OD, which would be fantastic, and about $2.5m.
I went for an avg. ticket price of ¥1400, because ¥1300 is avg. but the fan event is doing 1/4 of the overall business, and I'd assume the fan event is much more expensive.
EDIT: After reading around and deliberating with Olive from BOT, I've got ¥320M OD, which uses a ¥1700 avg. price since theres a large % of IMAX and 4DX.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
¥320 million ($2.9 million), though probably a little lower (¥310/315 million), sounds about right. I don't believe the avg. ticket price will be as high as ¥1,700 (thinking more along the norm of ¥1,550/1,600 for a premium release), which is why I'd go a little lower. The premium showings (3D/IMAX/etc.) were fine, but the 2D showings easily outpaced them.
It's certainly a good/great first day, and is encouraging as the weekend begins. Unfortunately, there isn't a good comparison among other Marvel/DC films. Obviously, aside from Spider-Man, the Avengers films are much bigger than any other Marvel/DC property, so it's going to be bigger than any of them, but the previous Avengers films didn't open on a Friday. The only recent comparison, I guess, is Spider-Man: Homecoming, and if we use it, then Infinity War's first day is about 15% below it. This isn't a perfect comparison, either, though, because Homecoming was released in the middle of Summer.
I'll have the Weekend Forecast up later.

It's actually 417,012, not 328,917 for Avengers. It's still less than Detective Conan, though, and is less than both of its predecessors. However, the first two films weren't released while a major film was still doing huge numbers like Detective Conan is. The first Avengers opened at the end of Golden Week (mid/late-August), several weeks after all the Summer tentpoles had already been released and were slowing down; while the second film was released at the beginning of Summer (first week of July) after a dead month (June is one of the weakest months in Japan) and before any major films were released.

Its pre-sales are 93% ahead of Doctor Strange and 60% ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the MCU's two biggest openers in the past two years. All the other MCU (and DC) films debuted too low to really compare this against, really, and unfortunately, Avengers: Age of Ultron opened on July 1st (a national discount day) which greatly boosted its ticket sales for the day, so it's not a fair comparison either!
Anyway, the numbers so far suggest an opening weekend around ¥750 million, however, Sunday is the start of Golden Week (Showa Day), so Monday is a holiday (observance), too, as a result, so I could see it reaching ¥800 million over the weekend. It'll be aiming to achieve the biggest opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film after the original Spider-Man trilogy.
Note: To anyone who follows the Japan Box-Office closely, largely disregard the Saturday results -- the day itself isn't going to reflect the weekend business whatsoever due to Showa Day landing on Sunday this year. Sunday, as a result, is going to be abnormally boosted, so Saturday will be a little deflated. It's also possible, if Sunday is strong enough, that the holdovers will hold slightly better than forecast.

Avengers: Infinity War is pretty much guaranteed to debut as the 5th biggest opener for a Marvel/DC film, but it'll be aiming to beat its predecessor to claim the 4th spot and become the biggest non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC opener.

So IW's OW is also going to get boosted by a holiday thought the Golden week started on Monday or something but still good as it should have a STRONG week.

Wow, great for Infinity War. It has out-grossed the entire gross of Pacific Rim Uprising with just two days of play.

Corpse, do you think Deadpool 2 can get near any of the Spider-Man films? Is the first fairly well-received?

It always begins April 29th, Showa Day, which is Sunday this year. However, since it's landing on a Sunday, that means that Monday becomes a holiday as well in observance of Showa Day. If any national holiday lands on the weekend, the following Monday becomes a holiday in Japan, too. Algren wrote: Corpse, do you think Deadpool 2 can get near any of the Spider-Man films? Is the first fairly well-received? Deadpool performed well in the market for a Marvel/DC film, but it may have been due to the novelty factor and the increased awareness/buzz following its performance in the U.S. by the time it was released in Japan. The sequel should do fine, I'm expecting numbers a little lower than the original, so it won't come anywhere close to comparing to a Spider-Man or Avengers film.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (04/28-29)
Avengers: Infinity War looks to have earned around ¥350 million ($3.2 million) on Saturday, and assuming Sunday does see a nice boost due to the holiday, is still aiming for an opening weekend around ¥750-800 million ($6.9-7.3 million). It needs to beat Avengers: Age of Ultron's ¥793.9 million opening in order to achieve the biggest non-Spider-Man opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film in the market.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (04/28-29)
Today I've a good time with Avengers (easily the best Avengers movie yet), but in the evening I found out that cinema also has Free! Take Your Marks (debut at no.8 10/28-29/2017 and sadly only in the top10 chart in that week) so I buy a ticket and realized that watching theatrical version of TV anime* in cinema is really much better than watching at home. I become one with the audience, the hundred of people that wish fictional character to have a good life and enjoy their youth to the fullest extent.
*I'm not talking about anime that specifically made for cinema release like Ghibli, Makoto Shinkai, or Mamoru Hosoda.

Disney has $9.0M which I suppose is for the 3 day period. Looks a bit low to me though.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (04/28-29)
Hmm... I'll have the Weekend Estimates up soon, and while I think $9 million over the 3-day is a little low, it could be accurate. I'm getting a $9.3/9.4 million 3-day total.
The film unfortunately didn't get a significant boost on Sunday. It increased, which is nice, but the increase was pretty small. It actually may have just debuted in 2nd place in terms of weekend admissions.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (04/28-29)
(C)Marvel Studios 2018Weekend Estimates (04/28-29)01 (---) ¥710,000,000 ($6.5 million), 0, ¥1,025,000,000 ($9.4 million), Avengers: Infinity War (Disney) NEW 02 (01) ¥598,000,000 ($5.5 million), -27%, ¥4,275,000,000 ($39.3 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK3 03 (02) ¥242,000,000 ($2.2 million), -35%, ¥1,025,000,000 ($9.4 million), Ready Player One (Warner Bros.) WK2 04 (03) ¥169,000,000 ($1.5 million), -15%, ¥850,000,000 ($7.9 million), Crayon Shin-chan: Kung-Fu Boys Ramen Rebellion (Toho) WK3 05 (04) ¥97,000,000 ($890,000), -28%, ¥4,375,000,000 ($41.0 million), Coco (Disney) WK7 06 (---) ¥80,000,000 ($730,000), 0, ¥110,000,000 ($1.0 million), My Little Monster (Toho) NEW 07 (05) ¥79,000,000 ($720,000), -36%, ¥325,000,000 ($3.0 million), Inuyashiki (Toho) WK2 08 (---) ¥60,000,000 ($550,000), 0, ¥80,000,000 ($730,000), Marmalade Boy (Warner Bros.) NEW 09 (07) ¥57,000,000 ($520,000), -32%, ¥3,125,000,000 ($29.2 million), The Boss Baby (Toho-Towa) WK6 10 (06) ¥45,000,000 ($410,000), -55%, ¥750,000,000 ($7.0 million), Pacific Rim: Uprising (Toho-Towa) WK3>Avengers: Infinity War delivers a great opening weekend based on estimates, the second biggest for a non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film but it will come in below Avengers: Age of Ultron (by about 11%). However, it's worth noting that Infinity War opened on Friday as opposed to Ultron's Saturday start, which given the genre, probably made up most of the difference. This is a great start, though, and given the release being right at the start of Golden Week, legs are sure to be solid, so outgrossing Ultron is pretty likely. Expect a total around ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) or a little more.
>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer held very well in its third weekend, and while it slipped to second place in revenue, it might still reign atop the box-office in admissions. I'm only getting a 5,000 or so difference between it and Infinity War (both being around 450,000). The twenty-second film in the long-running franchise is still doing record numbers for the franchise, and is well on track for a total around ¥7.5 billion ($70 million).
I'm a bit busy this afternoon, so I'll include analysis for a few other films in the Top 10 when Actuals are released. And speaking of which, Actuals will likely be delayed a day or two due to Golden Week, so expect them on Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Also, with the start of Golden Week, get ready for some massive weekdays.
