Re: Japan Box Office: Beasts Repeats @ #1; Your Name Nears $
"5CMPS" was Shinkai's own production with an estimated budget of $5 million, while "Your name" is a full-length film and far superior in visual aspect with large cast and promotion, a minimum of $25-$30 million tally seems right at the moment, but it can be higher or lower than that. It's financed by Genki Kawamura (Previously co-produced Wolf's children, Boy and the beast and few other live action adaptation) along with Noritaka Katachi (Worked in previous Shinkai's films), Shinkai only serve as an director and writer, so won't gain much financially but finally getting the recognition.
'The matter is not the money it made'? lol, you're absolutely wrong. In today's generation, the success of the film is determine by the box office collection also, every 9 out of 10 articles published will talk about how much money it made, second by rest of the things. In Past, there has been lot of underappreciated films like Paparika, Tokyo godfather, Perfect blue etc which even inspired legendary directors, things could've been different if it had been a success in term of money making.

Corpse, can you help me with my questions about the films I mentioned? What do you think the admissions of these films would be?
I think Jaws and Ben-Hur had to touch the 5 million.

I think you misunderstood my statement. Of course its earnings is impressive and everyone in the business consider that as the prime parameter. What I really meant is that such level of success is never anticipated, even if it is now a Genki Kawamura production. The guy himself has said that. If Mamoru hosoda who get this much attention, it would still be a big thing, but not beyond prediction and will only cemented his name on the animation business. Was the budget really that big? Well perhaps when the film grew large the promotion was carried out more intense, but I doubt it was already planned. And how much was the production budget? If the initial target was only 2-3 billion, the budget should be much lower, business wise. The number you were mentioned was already around 3 billion.

Re: Japan Box Office: Beasts Repeats @ #1; Your Name Nears $
enzo1988: To my knowledge, and I've done a lot of research on this, no official admission figures have been reported (that's online) for any of the films you're gathering information on. HOWEVER, with the knowledge I do have, we can work out a reasonable answer! I can give you the average ticket price dating back to 1955 that you could then use to get an estimated admission figure, but you'd have to guesstimate for films released between 1950-1954 (or earlier). Thankfully, the average ticket price was mostly the same from 1955-1959, so it was probably comparable from 1950-1954 as well (give or take a yen or two). It's also possible, since 1955 was higher than 1956 and 1957, that ticket prices were trending down, too, but I wouldn't assume it was 65 or higher before 1955. Average Ticket Prices (1955-1979) 1955 - 63 1956 - 62 1957 - 62 1958 - 64 1959 - 65 1960 - 72 1961 - 85 1962 - 115 1963 - 152 1964 - 178 1965 - 203 1966 - 219 1967 - 236 1968 - 262 1969 - 295 1970 - 324 1971 - 366 1972 - 411 1973 - 500 1974 - 631 1975 - 751 1977 - 852 1978 - 923 1979 - 967So, for example, the site you linked has Gone with the Wind (released in 1952 in Japan), earning a ¥130 million distributor income. Now, before the year 2000, box office figures were reported as distributor income which represented, in most cases, around 55-60% of a film's box office total. It's very important to remember that. I'd estimate that Gone with the Wind grossed around ¥210 million (~$950,000 in 1952), assuming the ¥130 million distributor income is accurate. No data is available on the avg. ticket price of 1952, but since the mid-1950s had similar ticket prices, I don't think it's a stretch to assume 1952 had a similar one as well. But let's be safe and go slightly lower than 1955 and use 61. That means that Gone with the Wind would have sold something around 3.3/3.4 million admissions. If you want, I can go through and do this for every film you listed, but it'd take some time and I wouldn't have it finished for a few days. Or, you can do it yourself if you understand how I did it. Let me know.

How much money would you estimate Shinkai is making from this film, as far as royalties and such? If it's not much, I'm sure he'd be able to charge a higher rate for future productions based on his film's current success.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (12/03-04)
Weekend Estimates (12/03-04)01 (01) ¥649,000,000 ($5.7 million), -21%, ¥3,150,000,000 ($28.2 million), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Warner Bros.) WK2 02 (02) ¥244,000,000 ($2.2 million), +16%, ¥20,025,000,000 ($193.3 million), Your Name. (Toho) WK15 03 (03) ¥81,000,000 ($715,000), -32%, ¥1,225,000,000 ($11.3 million), Museum (Warner Bros.) WK5 04 (06) ¥65,000,000 ($575,000), +01%, ¥425,000,000 ($3.8 million), In This Corner of the World (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) WK4 05 (05) ¥55,000,000 ($485,000), -47%, ¥250,000,000 ($2.3 million), Shippu Rondo (Toei) WK2 06 (04) ¥53,000,000 ($949,000), -49%, ¥225,000,000 ($2.0 million), KanColle: The Movie (Kadokowa) WK2 07 (---) ¥35,000,000 ($310,000), 0, ¥50,000,000 ($440,000), Florence Foster Jenkins (Gaga) NEW 08 (07) ¥31,000,000 ($280,000), -46%, ¥2,150,000,000 ($19.3 million), Death Note: Light Up the New World (Warner Bros.) WK6 09 (---) ¥30,000,000 ($270,000), 0, ¥30,000,000 ($270,000), Ranmaru: The Man with the God Tongue (Shochiku) NEW 10 (10) ¥28,000,000 ($255,000), -24%, ¥625,000,000 ($5.7 million), Drowning Love (Gaga) WK5>Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earns an easy second week atop the box office, and posted an impressive ~20% drop in the process. It's now tracking about on par with the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows - Part 1, granted it does have a couple days to its advantage thanks to a Wednesday release.
However, the fact that it's performing very close to, nearly on par with, any of the Harry Potter films, even if it's the weakest one, is excellent. Let's see how the next few weeks turn out - it'd be something if it manages to outgross Deathly Hallows - Part 1.
>Your Name. has fallen from the top of the box office, but that's not slowing it down in the slightest. Based on weekend estimates, it's actually up this weekend, and by double digit figures. I also believe it has exceeded the ¥20 billion ($193 million) milestone, a feat only four other films have manage to accomplish in the past, on its 101st day in release.
It's now the fifth highest-grossing film of all-time, and will surpass Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (¥20.3 billion) by the end of next week. And in terms of admissions, it's reached ~15.4 million, and is closing in on Howl's Moving Castle (15.5 million); Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (16.2 million); and Titanic (16.83 million)... it's going to surpass the former two with no problem, and may just pass the latter as well.
Makoto Shinkai's absolute smash clearly has plenty of life remaining, too, and it's becoming likely that it'll still be playing on a sufficient number of screens when New Year rolls around in four weeks, which is going to give it a huge boost on top of its incredible ongoing total... It's probably unlikely to happen, but there is a clear path to ¥25 billion (~$230 million), which means it may just challenge Frozen and/or Titanic to become the second or third highest-grossing film of all-time.

Regardless of what he's making from the film's success, though, he's certainly making a good amount from his success as an author, as well, He had five books in the Top 25 (three related to Your Name, and two others from previous works) this year. Your Name, the novel, topped the yearly novel sales chart with 1.42 million copies sold and it's still selling very well.

But I'll wait for the time it takes. I do not do these things well. Instead, you are the best I know in this complicated but exciting subject. The box office in Japan. Sorry for my bad English. It's probably unlikely to happen, but there is a clear path to ¥25 billion (~$230 million), which means it may just challenge Frozen and/or Titanic to become the second or third highest-grossing film of all-time.[/size] That'd be amazing! The late-run longevity some films have over there is impressive given how WOM hits here tend to peter out rather quickly once they've exhausted initial interest after the first few weeks.

@Corpse: thanks for the forecast update, as always. One source stated that the actual total for YN is currently 19.95 Billion Yen, while the other one 19.96 Billion Yen. Either one is soooo damn close to 20 Billion Yen > < Also one of the source has breakdown and total for your name in the countries that it has release, although not all countries, in US $. The total there is US$ 223.8 Million. edit: In case someone here hasn't notice it, your name win in China was even more impressive if ticket price is taken into consideration. With such low average ticket price (compared with other previous winners, namely dr. strange, fantastic beast), its admission exceed an amazing 10 million tickets (from just three days).

Re: Japan Box Office: Beasts Repeats @ #1; Your Name Nears $
Thanks Corpse, we would like to have healthy discussion in future also. Btw, what with the exchange rate? "Your name. (Kimi no Na wa. ) anime film has earned 19,957,000,000 yen (about US$175.8 million) as of Sunday" https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... le/.109516What's the correct numbers in US dollar then? And kimi no Na wa is unofficially nominated for Academy with a win in LAFCA http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... lm/.109505

Re: Japan Box Office: Beasts Repeats @ #1; Your Name Nears $
I think Corpse either cummulating dollars week by week or referring to the exchange rate at the beginning of the release. There's some way to count it. I don't have a clue about which the most correct one, though.
Some bad news for your name from China, by olive, with the opening of highly anticipated local film, The Great Wall the end of next week, your name could retain only a fragment of the screens it had during its opening week. I don't have any info on when Rogue On will come to China, but I think even for this blockbuster it is a bad decision to release at the same time with a local film with this calibre. If i'm not mistaken it's the week after that in US (for RO).
Anyway, I have observed YN first four day compared with FB's. I found they are very similar (linearly). Only difference is that yn is slightly higher (bigger gap if you consider the admission), anyway with this comparison, if FB could gain about 500+ m yuan after its 2nd weekend, yn should at least gain the same cummulative number. It won't be much after that weekend with the coming of TGW. So, don't expect 700 m+ yuan (US$ 95m) at this moment.

Lol it turns that RO US release date is the same as The Great Wall China release date, 16 Dec. 1 month delay is a good option. But this is not China thread lol.
In Japan, RO release date is also 16 dec, that should push some movies out from the game.

Re: Japan Box Office: Beasts Repeats @ #1; Your Name Nears $
The correct way to determine the USD figure for a film is to accumulate the numbers on a week-to-week basis (I even do it more frequently than that, about every 5 days).
You can't simply take a current gross of a film and convert that figure with the current exchange rate. When you do that, films can lose or gain massive numbers, sometimes tens of millions, if there's ever a significant exchange rate shift - which there has been since the US election; the dollar has gained a lot against the yen (almost 11%) since then.
Your Name. is a very recent example of this because BOM, unfortunately, does it. Look at their numbrs for the film: The weekend of 11/19-20 they had it at $171.1 million, and then a week later they have it at $172.1 million. That's a measly $1 million increase, when it actually grossed $1.9 million over the following weekend alone, not even accounting for what it made over the weekdays. It doesn't add up, and causes severely inaccurate USD figures.
The most accurate USD figure is now ~$192.8 million.

Weekend Actuals, complete actuals I should say, haven't been released yet, so they'll probably be available sometime tomorrow instead.
Also, I'll have a First Look at 2017 and which films to watch posted sometime on Wednesday this week.

However, the fact that it's performing very close to, nearly on par with, any of the Harry Potter films, even if it's the weakest one, is excellent. Let's see how the next few weeks turn out - it'd be something if it manages to outgross Deathly Hallows - Part 1 - ¥6.86 billion (~$60 million, currently).
>Your Name. has fallen from the top of the box office, but that's not slowing it down in the slightest. Just when it was beginning to slip a little bit, it's actually up this weekend, and by double digit figures to achieve the second biggest fifteenth weekend of all-time, behind only Frozen.
It's now the fifth highest-grossing film of all-time, and will surpass Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (¥20.3 billion) by the end of this week. And in terms of admissions, it's reached 15.36 million admissions, and is closing in on Howl's Moving Castle (15.5 million); Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (16.2 million); and Titanic (16.83 million)... it's going to surpass the former two with no problem, and may just pass the latter as well.
