Cynosure wrote: If One Piece's manga sales are any indication, I don't see Gold opening higher or grossing more than Z. Its latest volume's sales have dropped another 100k first-week after volume 81's sales had dropped nearly 300k first week compared to volume 80. I thought that drop was due to the Kumamoto earthquake, but it looks like I was mistaken.
I know they're offering some exclusive release for the first few million moviegoers so there might be a rush-factor, but it seems the size of the fanbase has fizzled a bit. It's probably due to the Dressrosa Arc having concluded in the manga and anime recently. Usually, sales between major arcs are a bit lower. Gold does have a 148% screen count advantage, higher normal ticket prices (Z was released before the tax hike), and 3D/4D screenings. It'll be tough to match Z in terms of admissions, but its gross shouldn't be that difficult to reach. mark66 wrote: Isn't ALICE missing in here? Yes, I missed it. Pretty much, though it's still likely playing at a handful of locations somewhere. I should be able to check if it's still playing anywhere tomorrow.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updating
Hi Corpse! I was wondering if this compiled list is correct or has any incorrect data. Can you please give me the final admissions for Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest and the Curse of the Black Pearl? I understand the latter may not be possible as I could not find any data for its opening weekend numbers and even its final gross is disputed. Thank you! Disney Live Action: Opening Weekends: Y1.921 billion ($16.6 million) / 1,421,738 :: Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest Y1.471 billion ($12.0 million) / 1,186,413 :: Pirates of the Caribbean at World’s End Y1.316 billion ($14.2 million) / 828,149 :: Alice in Wonderland Y1.209 billion ($14.7 million) / 773,184 :: Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides Y691.7 million ($6.8 million) / 500,837 :: Maleficent Y556.1 million ($4.7 million) / 419,796 :: Cinderella Y425.4 million ($4.2 million) / 273,209 :: Alice Through the Looking Glass Y269.9 million ($2.9 million) / 184,281 :: Oz the Great and Powerful Totals: Y11.80 billion ($142.8 million) / 7.2 million :: Alice in Wonderland Y10.90 billion ($102.4 million) / 8.4 million :: Pirates of the Caribbean at World’s End Y10.02 billion ($84 million) / ??? :: Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest Y8.87 billion ($114.9 million) / 6.0 million :: Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides Y6.80 billion ($60 million) / ??? :: Pirates of the Caribbean the Curse of the Black Pearl Y6.54 billion ($63.5 million) / 4.97 million :: Maleficent Y5.73 billion ($46.6 million) / 4.46 million :: Cinderella Y1.75 billion ($18.9 million) / 1.25 million :: Oz the Great and Powerful

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updating
7.75 million for Pirates 2 5.10 million for Pirates 1
That's all correct, except that Pirates 4 sold 5.86 million admissions (not 6.0 million) and Alice in Wonderland sold 7.3 million admissions (not 7.2 million). You can also add The Force Awakens to that list now:
Opening: ¥1.245 billion ($10.3 million) / 800,258 admissions Final: ¥11.58 billion ($96.0 million) / 7.45 million admissions
Are you also intersted in adding smaller films like Tomorrowland to the list?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updating
I'll have the Weekend Forecast up pretty soon.
Finding Dory, Pokemon, and High & Low are this year's wide openers for the Summer kickoff holiday weekend.

The weekend's top opener will be Finding Dory, Pixar's sequel to the uber-blockbuster smash Finding Nemo from 2003, which is still Pixar's biggest film in Japan. So, when you consider how well Toy Story 3 performed, and how close Monsters University came to its predecessor (not to mention Disney's major winning streak), you'd think Dory would be in position to score a major opening weekend... but that might not be the case.
>Finding Dory's pre-sales, and morning/afternoon ticket sales, are strong, but they're not very strong. In fact, it's trailing Monsters University's pre-sales by ~20%. If it's skewing significantly toward a young audience, then its pre-sales aren't of any concern, but if it's drawing in the usual Disney crowd, then it's slightly alarming.
As it stands, it's very unlikely to come near a ¥1 billion debut over the weekend frame, and will probably barely cross the milestone over the three-day holiday weekend. That'd be a great opening, no doubt about it, but it'd be below both Toy Story 3 and Monsters University, meaning it might not be capable of reaching the ¥10 billion ($100 million) uber-blockbuster milestone unless its legs come in strong. It's definitely worth noting that those two films opened one week earlier than Dory, so the pre-sales comparisons might not be exactly fair either.
We'll see how the weekend plays out before ruling this one as "disappointing" (in regards to expectations and comparisons) since pre-sales aren't always firm indicators, and holiday weekends can behave oddly at times, too.
>High & Low: The Story of S.W.O.R.D. is the final result of Japan's supergroup band Exile Tribe's multi-media project "High & Low" that consisted of a tour, a new record, a TV drama, and more. The film is having stage greetings in all 47 prefectures all weekend long, as well as numerous giveaways to attendees over the weekend. Its pre-sales are quite enormous (even higher than Finding Dory's at the usual locations), already achieving 20% sell-through before the first showings began this morning.
>Pokemon XY&Z: Volcanion and the Mechanical Magearna, the nineteenth film in the popular franchise, and final film of the XY series, trails last year's film in pre-sales by ~9% at the usual locations; so unfortunately, the series doesn't seem likely that it'll snap out of its downward spiral at the box office yet again this year.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Holiday Weekend)
Usual Locations [Two-Thirds of Market] - Hourly Admission Updates (Saturday)
10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 1PM > 2PM > 3PM > 5PM > 7PM > FINAL
33,688 - High & Low: The Movie (NEW) 19,596 - Pokemon 19 (NEW) 16,656 - Finding Dory (NEW) x4,209 - Independence Day: Resurgence (WK2) x2,948 - Alice Through the Looking Glass (WK3)
Huge start, obviously, for High & Low: The Movie. The majority of those ticket sales came from pre-sales and early stage greetings, so expect to see minimal hourly updates for awhile followed by a huge spike in a couple hours when more stage greetings occur.
Pokemon 19 starts of the day off trailing last year's film by about 12%, and given how consistent the franchise is, that number shouldn't change much throughout the day.
Good start for Finding Dory, if just a little underwhelming. It's up 81% at start-of-day compared to Inside Out which opened over this weekend last year. And seeing as how it's behind Pokemon right now, it's probably safe to assume it's not skewing too young, so expect it to see consistently steady updates throughout the day (it'll eventually claim the top spot).

As we near the mid-day point, here's how the films are performing:
Finding Dory continues to outpace Inside Out by about 79% (inline with the weekend forecast). Pokemon 19 continues to trail last year's film by about 12% (inline with the weekend forecast).
There's nothing to really compare High & Low: The Movie against, but it's performing very well as expected and currently has an impressive 43% sell-through rate (averaging 104 people per showing so far).

Finding Dory's first day comes in:
>81% ahead of Inside Out >46% ahead of Zootopia >28% ahead of Big Hero 6 >11% behind Frozen >12% behind Monsters University
All of these comparisons point toward an opening weekend around 500,000 admissions or a bit higher if Sunday comes in strong, as it's expected to, for a weekend gross of ~¥700-725 million ($7-7.2 million). Overall... while it's looking at a strong debut, it has to be a little disappointing unless it improves significantly tomorrow. Unlike all the comparisons above though, except for Inside Out, Dory is opening over a 3-day holiday weekend, so some of its weekend business could be going to Monday, making the weekend-to-weekend comparisons a little unfair.
If Finding Dory does end up below Monsters University for the weekend, and in total gross/admissions, I do believe this confirms that the Pixar brand just isn't what it used to be in the market.
Walt Disney Animation is finding more success in the market than Pixar now, and seemed to have come in and claimed that quality imported animation slot that Pixar filled for so many years. Assuming that Finding Dory has usual Pixar legs (9-11x), then it may end up below Zootopia in the market, or on par with it, when it should have been much bigger. And it's unlikely to outgross Big Hero 6, too, and will obviously be way below Frozen.
Pokemon 19's first day comes in:
>16% behind Pokemon 18. >19% behind Pokemon 17.
Pokemon continues to drop at the box office... Last year's film became the second-lowest grossing film in the series, so this year's film just might become the lowest-grossing film in the series (below the 5th film) unless its legs end up being exceptional. The Pokemon Company really needs to do something with the next generation, which begins next year, to re-energize the series.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Holiday Weekend)
Usual Locations [Two-Thirds of Market] - Hourly Admission Updates (Sunday)
10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 1PM > 2PM > 3PM > 5PM > 7PM > FINAL
24,720 - Finding Dory (NEW) 18,148 - Pokemon 19 (NEW) 11,258 - High & Low: The Movie (NEW) x7,961 - Independence Day: Resurgence (WK2) x5,537 - Alice Through the Looking Glass (WK3)
Excellent uptick over Saturday so far for Finding Dory at the start-of-day (+49%), and hopefully it can maintain that lead through the afternoon since evening shows are weaker on Sundays versus Saturdays. It's going to need a Sunday increase of at least 25/30% if it's to clear the 500,000 admission mark over the weekend; the number I'd consider the success/disappointment bar.
Pokemon is actually down from yesterday at the start-of-day (-08%), which is a bit alarming. It doesn't have night showings since 90%+ of its business comes from the morning/day, so it'll either be down slightly compared to yesterday, or about even, unless it can surprise soon.
High & Low: The Movie is way down compared to yesterday (-67%), but that's to be expected since it was such an advance ticket driven film; it'll recover over the course of the day.

Very, very nice for Finding Dory.
I'll post an update on how it, and the others, are performing with the next update.

Finding Dory is outpacing its Saturday admissions by 61% now near the mid-day point, a very impressive result thus far. It won't maintain that high of a percentage once the evening shows begin (Sat. evenings > Sun. evenings), but it's building up an impressive lead that a ~40% increase over Saturday shouldn't be unreasonable. And such an increase will likely guarantee the film debuts north of 500,000 admissions for the weekend frame.
Pokemon 19 has rebounded very well since early this morning, and is currently outpacing its Saturday admissions by 19%. That percentage is unlikely to hold up, too, once the evening shows begin, but Pokemon is a film series that has little to no shows after 7pm, meaning it's largely unaffected by the drop-off in Sunday night business. So, maybe there's still a slim chance it can match last year's debut, or at least come closer than yesterday suggested it would.
High and Low: The Movie also recovered since this morning as expected, and is down a fair 27% compared to its Saturday admissions. Unlike its fellow weekend openers, it might be able to continue to improve a bit throughout the day since yesterday was inflated from mass pre-sales (~37% of its admissions yesterday).

Usual Locations [Two-Thirds of Market] - Weekend Admissions (07/16-17)
344,292 - Finding Dory (Disney) NEW 195,271 - High & Low: The Movie (Shochiku) NEW 171,784 - Pokemon XY&Z: Volcanion and the Mechanical Magearna (Toho) NEW 149,734 (-36%) - Independence Day: Resurgence (FOX) WK2 x98,519 (-29%) - Alice Through the Looking Glass (Disney) WK3
Thanks to a very, very strong Sunday increase of 48%, Finding Dory was able to outperform all of Walt Disney Animation's and Pixar's recent films in the market at the usual locations. Its weekend admissions at the same locations ended up being:
88% ahead of Inside Out 65% ahead of Zootopia 34% ahead of Big Hero 6 3% ahead of Frozen 2% ahead of Monsters University
Now the last two comparisons on the list are marginal increases, so it doesn't necessarily guarantee that Dory opened above them. Both Frozen and MU opened above 600,000 admissions, 602,000 and 614,000, respectively, so that's great news. If we use the other comparisons, Dory will miss 600,000, but still likely have sold over 550,000 (only Zootopia puts it narrowly below that mark). So an opening weekend between 550,000-600,000 admissions, with a slight chance of just over 600,000 admissions, is the likely result of the weekend frame.
Pokemon 19 managed to improve upon its Saturday figures as well, but still ends up below the most recent entries in the series:
13% behind Pokemon 18 16% behind Pokemon 17
So, unfortunately, the series won't recover with the last film of the XY generation, and this one could be in position to become the lowest-grossing film in the entire franchise (below the 5th film) unless it has above average legs for the series. [CORRECTION] - Last year's film IS the lowest-grossing film in the series, so this year's film is likely to gross less, becoming the new lowest-grossing film in the series...
High & Low: The Movie is one of few films that experienced a drop on Sunday, but given how strong its pre-sales were, as well as the rush to see the band at the earliest stage greetings on Saturday, it's not unexpected. And the ~15% drop on Sunday is actually pretty solid considering the film's unique circumstances (stage greetings in all 47 prefectures is very rare).
Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly.
