Myself. I record the exchange rates on a daily basis to avoid inaccurate USD numbers.

So your US gross would be the most accurate of any other site? Say Box Office Mojo for example?

I would believe so.

BOM doesn't update the international box office anymore, but when they did, they just updated totals using the most recent exchange rate, ignoring any earnings beforehand. Any significant change in the exchange rate resulted in them having many inaccurate USD figures.

Pokemon is screwed. With last year's multiplier it would be looking at a final total around 2.55 billion yen but with its obon monday being down 34% the multiplier and the final total should be even lower and for the latter...fall below 2.5 billion.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest August Opening Weekends
Yeah, it's tracking 13% behind last year's film now, so a sub-¥2.5 billion total is looking possible.

Also, I just realized that Jurassic World broke the August Opening Weekend Record, which coincidentally enough, was held by its predecessor.

So, that's yet another record that fell this weekend, and another record to add to the ever growing record breaking list of 2015.

Biggest August Opening Weekends (1998-)

01. ¥845.1 million ($6.8 million) - Jurassic World (2015)
02. ¥805.0 million ($6.7 million) - Jurassic Park III (2001)
03. ¥767.2 million ($7.5 million) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (2014)
04. ¥766.3 million ($7.1 million) - The Mummy 3: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
05. ¥748.0 million ($6.2 million) - Planet of the Apes (2001)
06. ¥644.5 million ($5.7 million) - The Suspect: Muroi Shinji (2005)
07. ¥631.4 million ($5.3 million) - Transformers (2007)
08. ¥625.6 million ($5.8 million) - 20th Century Boys (2008)
09. ¥603.5 million ($4.9 million) - Attack on Titan - Part 1 (2015)
10. ¥601.3 million ($5.1 million) - Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
11. ¥592.2 million ($5.8 million) - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (2014)
12. ¥573.5 million ($4.6 million) - Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)
13. ¥546.0 million ($4.4 million) - Minions (2015)
14. ¥545.9 million ($4.5 million) - Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
15. ¥500.9 million ($6.4 million) - The Avengers (2012)
16. ¥485.3 million ($4.7 million) - Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
17. ¥477.5 million ($5.0 million) - Kamen Rider Decade: All Riders vs. Dai-Shocker (2009)
18. ¥409.6 million ($3.3 million) - Boruto: Naruto the Movie (2015)
19. ¥399.5 million ($5.1 million) - Rurouni Kenshin (2012)
20. ¥399.2 million ($4.6 million) - Flowering Dogwood (2010)

Additionally, five of the Top 20 August Opening Weekends occurred over the past two weeks this year (2 last weekend, 3 this weekend).

Sorry to ask again, but is it possible to get the exact total gross and number of tickets sold for the LL movie as of 58 days? All I know is that it surpassed 2.3 billion yen from Bunkatsushin, but since you've rounded it off to a more exact number such as 2.31 billion yen, i've gotten ask the question. Thanks!

Notes after Wednesday's Estimates:

Jurassic World increased over its opening day from last Wednesday, and should be around the ¥2.5 billion mark already. It's on track for to earn almost ¥4 billion when Obon Festival concludes.
The Boy and the Beast is back over ¥100 million for its daily gross, after over a month in release. Its staying power amid all the major films that have opened after it has been very impressive.
Inside Out experienced an odd decrease from last Wednesday, which suggests something that opened this past week hurt its appeal with females, because Wednesday has been its best weekday by far since it opened.
Avengers: Age of Ultron should have exceeded ¥3 billion, becoming the fifth-highest grossing Marvel/DC film (after the original Spider-Man trilogy, and its own predecessor).

Thanks!

Since it fell out of the Top 10, exact numbers are harder to come by. They're usually just reported when the film reaches a specific milestone. And as far as I know, nothing besides the ¥2.31 billion total with 1.62 million admissions has been posted anywhere other than on Bunkatsushin.

It's likely to receive some sort of update after Obon Festival via some source considering it's a multi-media franchise, so I'll include it in a post and/or PM any news. You'll probably be updated on its running total before I am, though. :mer:

Amazing for the 2005 weekend to still be the biggest weekend 10 years later. Any chance the Yôkai Watch 2-Star Wars VIII weekend could challenge it ? :1st:

It should. It'll depend on the strength of the holdovers (Orange, Kamen Rider, Living With My Mother, Spectre, Peanuts), going into that weekend, though.

There's a very good chance it'll be the first time in history that two films debut over ¥1 billion on the same weekend.

Combined, Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens and Yo-Kai Watch Y2: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! should earn ¥2.5 billion or more over the weekend. They're targeting completely different audiences, so neither will affect the other.

Oh yeah, it's a major franchise at the box office and a very well known property in Japan. It's probably the biggest imported franchise in Japan in terms of popularity (Harry Potter is the only arguable challenger, but its popularity dwindled over the years).

All the theaters that'll be playing the upcoming film this December was listed 5 months in advance.

Quite a few prolific artists, filmmakers, and the like have listed Star Wars as having an influence on their work. And earlier this summer, there were many people partaking in "rice field art", where they'd display Star Wars art in their rice fields. Star Wars has its own toy lines exclusive to Japan, and there are often exhibits throughout the country.

I believe Lucas has even talked in the past about how the Jedi were largely inspired by samurai and Shaolin monks, and how Akira Kurosawa's work helped influence Star Wars.

Nice. Thanks for the info.

Lucas is a fucking hack. EVERYTHING helped influence Star Wars because Star Wars doesn't have one original idea. It's Flash Gordon and Kurosawa and the legend of the samurai (jedi).

Honestly, I give Lucas a pass. For everything else he spins about the creation and development of Star Wars, I think he's been forthcoming about the fact that all that other stuff inspired him.

Notes after Thursday's Estimates:

First off - huge day, and today (Friday) should be even bigger.

-Jurassic World registered either its second or third biggest day since it opened by pulling off an incredible 100%+ increase over last Thursday. It's going to crush the ¥3 billion milestone in only 10 days, and might even reach ¥4 billion after 12 days.
-The Boy and the Beast looks to have risen above Boruto in daily gross, and with a total near ¥4.3 billion, it's officially become Mamoru Hosoda's highest-grossing film, outgrossing the 4.22 billion total of his previous film, Wolf Children.

Notes after Friday's Estimates:

Friday was the biggest day of Obon Festival this year, in both admissions and gross. The Top 10 yesterday was bigger than most weekends due to how many major films are in release.

-Jurassic World delivered its biggest day in release yet, and is quite close to ¥3.5 billion after just 10 days in release. It's Obon, but it's still incredibly impressive. It'll exceed the ¥4 billion milestone after Sunday.

-Boruto is only down because it opened last Friday, and Naruto is a naturally frontloaded franchise.

-Inside Out is right around the ¥3 billion milestone, and may have exceeded the mark on Friday. There are several bigger films in release, so its performance is being overshadowed, but it's still doing quite well. It's multiplier is likely to exceed 10, afterall.

The Weekend Forecast will be posted in an hour or two.
