Re: Japan Box-Office: 2023 Charts Updated
There have been a few examples of films recovering from bigger second weekend drops, so it is too early to really rule out anything right now... but it's certainly not a good sign and it'll have a much steeper hill to climb now as a result.
I will say that, overall, holds this weekend were quite meh across the board. Some of it is due to last weekend being a holiday weekend, so if the upcoming dailies and next weekend are strong, then this weekend may have just been a down one.
I'll have estimates for M:I here soon, as well as for HDYL's second weekend.

Re: Japan Box-Office: M:I7 Strong OW,; HDYL Steep 2nd WKND D
About to post the updated Biggest Franchise list here soon. It's been almost 2 years since the last update!
And the list will be updated as of July 17th (last Monday). A new Mission: Impossible just opened, of course, but it's not included yet. We have some other franchise films opening over the next several weeks, so I'll update the list again in about 6 weeks. I'll try to keep it updated at least once every season (~4x a year) so the numbers don't fall too far behind.
KANROJI! I added James Bond to the list at long last. Thanks for sharing those numbers so long ago. No USD estimates (I might go back and use the average ER for each year a film was released to get a rough USD total, but that'll be for another time) and no admissions estimate since trying to estimate so many films (basically any before 2000, and especially 1980) will likely just give us a guesstimate at best. (Maybe I'll eventually add a guesstimated admissions figure for the franchise.)
If you have any other updated franchise info, please share. Note: I didn't include compilation releases to any franchise. So... this keeps Demon Slayer off the list until we get an official second film, and as such, some figures might differ slightly. I'm not exactly against adding compilation films, it's just that they're in that weird grey area for me. This doesn't impact the vast majority of franchises though, and I don't think it changes any of the rankings.

Re: Japan Box-Office: M:I7 Strong OW,; HDYL Steep 2nd WKND D
i was surprised by the steep drop for HDYL since most industry reviewers seemed to love it, but audience review score seems pretty bad and polarizing. 2.9 in yahoo and i think i saw plenty of people saying that it's hard to follow even though the visuals are great.

Re: Japan Box-Office: M:I7 Strong OW,; HDYL Steep 2nd WKND D
It's sort of a hard film to get a read on. 10 years since Miyazaki's last film and 9 years since the last theatrical Studio Ghibli film. It did open over a 4-day holiday weekend... perhaps any pent up demand + the holiday effect gave it an opening higher than it would have debuted with otherwise, thus giving us a larger second weekend decline than anticipated. Not to mention if the no marketing strategy has had any effect on either the opening or the poor second weekend hold.
Now... I really don't think the scenario here is the case, but if it would suddenly start holding super well, it could hold some weight.
Toy Story 4 could be the "best" example here. That was 9 years later (comparable wait) and opened on the same 4-day holiday weekend as How Do You Live?. It dropped 38% in its second weekend, which is also a bit high. Not as high or as alarming as the ~48% I estimated for HDYL (and this is in admissions... it might be a little higher in revenue having lost some premium showings), but a 38% second weekend drop was still a sort of "what happened?" amount. Anything over 30/35% in a second weekend, regardless of most opening weekend circumstances (like holidays), is mediocre. Anything near/over 50% is legit bad.
Toy Story 4 did recover, but it was still relatively frontloaded and despite its huge opening weekend (by far the biggest for a Pixar film), it really struggled to hit ¥10 billion and fell just short of Toy Story 3 and Finding Nemo. We might be seeing something similar here with How Do You Live? being more frontloaded than expected, and despite its strong opening, falling just short of its predecessor (in this case, The Wind Rises).

Now it's official that Japan is the only country that has two Tom Cruise movies in the cinema at the same time, MI7 and Top Gun Maverick.

Japan is the "only country" a lot of times, especially in recent years, I think. Haha.
Like, is it the only country that MI7 looks likely to outgross MI6? (As well as some others in the franchise.) Feels like it it at least among the top X bigger markets.
And thanks Kanroji, I'll edit the actual for MI7 into the charts above in a few.

I know it might be premature but I really do think Elemental will do better than the expectation of 1.2 billion yen total. I think there is a visible audience for the movie in Japan and the marketing seems to be landing. Might be wrong though.

flip1 wrote: looks like MI7 will pace ahead of Fallout in yen, but just about match it in dollars Strong chance it outgrosses MI6, and good/fair chance it outgrosses MI3, MI4, and MI5 as well. MI1 and especially MI2 are probably too high. This is in yen and likely admissions too, of course. USD is a different story because the exchange rate still remains at a 25/30 year low after more than a year now with no improvement expected anytime soon (unlikely for the rest of the year minimum). It can gross nearly 30% more than MI6 in JPY, but that's only going to give it an even gross in USD due to the exchange rate. MI7 could become the third highest grossing (and most attended) film in the franchise, yet still be the lowest grossing in USD. Japan is a stagnant market and has had little/no inflation since the early 90s and hasn't had much in the past couple years either, so the JPY has been especially impacted by how strong the USD has become. There's very little Japan can even do to combat it because of their stagnant state, so it's ultimately going to take the USD to depreciate before we see any significant improvement. We've seen very, very slight improvements a couple times in the past year (more like 15 months), but then the FEDs in the US raise interest rates again that erases all of it.

Director &Producer is visiting though - I wish if Cruise could have done the same (His recent comment after cancellation is that he is coming soon later) Monster Monday - ¥4,795,200 / ¥2,000,920,610 Admit wise - 3,483 / 1,455,470
