Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (04/02-03)
Demon Slayer's actuals (weekend gross/admissions and total), along with all others released so far, are very, very close to what I estimated, so I'll move right along with posting the Monday estimate soon since I don't need to go back and adjust any of the estimates from all of last week.

172-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,481,746,700 ($377.45 million) / 28,598,381 Admissions

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Still want to see another weekday or two before projecting when it'll reach ¥40 billion, but the fact that this Monday managed to be flat (even up just under 1%) versus last week (Spring Break) is pretty remarkable. Assuming it narrowly came in above last Monday, then this was its biggest Monday since February 22nd (a pseudo-holiday) and since February 1st (non-holiday).

And I can't find a bigger, or even comparable, 172nd day from any film in any country at BOM. The closest that I could find was E.T. Not saying it's the most impressive 172nd day in the history of the worldwide box office (many factors to consider, obviously), but I don't believe any are bigger in terms of pure revenue.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Demon Slayer continues to add to its record total, adding almost ¥1 billion more (¥995 million) to its running total since the last update on March 8th.

And the final Evangelion enters the Top 100 (at #96) after 28 days in release, knocking Harry Potter 7-1 out of the Top 100, to give the classic anime its sole representation on the list. Expect it to finish somewhere in the low-60s to mid-50s.

The 25th Monday of DIRTY DANCING in Germany could have been bigger (DD had 361,135 admissions in its 25th week), but back in 1988 there were no dailies available... (DD had another 318,156 admissions in its 26th week and 295,977 in its 27th week)

Also MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING did $560,000 on day 172, but it took MBFGW 120 days to pass the 1,000 theaters mark (it opened in 247 theaters)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (04/02-03)
Are you able to estimate Dirty Dancing's dailies using the behavioral pattern of today's dailies, or as far back as dailies are available?

Also... My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I'm close to considering it the most impressive run ever (at least in the longevity category of things) in the U.S. if only for the sole reason of it thumping everything else. Much is to do with it expanding, but even then, those are crazy numbers at this stage of release (and it'd go higher). And why doesn't BOM have its dailies for days 40-105, practically excluding the entire summer season?

Considering BOM doesn't even have the correct Demon Slayer Box Office data, I don't put much trust in it outside domestic box office numbers.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time continues its very impressive reign atop the box office in its fourth weekend, avoiding a 40% drop despite coming off a boosted third weekend (giveaway event/stage greetings). The farewell to the classic series sold an additional 196,321 admissions over the weekend, and has sold 4,513,374 admissions after just 28 days in release. Its current total stands 29% above the final total of its predecessor, and 15% higher than the combined totals of the first two films in the Rebuild (Shin) series. I'm expecting a finish around ¥8.5 billion (~$85 million) on 5.5 million admissions, as long as no other events are planned. The nearly 10 year wait that was delayed by numerous delays every couple years, but the fans were certainly willing to wait as long as they needed in order to send the series off on the highest note in the series.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train managed to increase once again (selling 153,000 admissions) after already jumping over 100% last weekend. To my knowledge, excluding expanding/limited releases, this is the first time ever (1998-) that a film has managed an increase following a prior 100% increase (106%) the weekend prior. Its 25th weekend also broke the 25th Weekend Record by 181%. 171-day admissions are up to 28,576,157. It's a little over ¥500 million away from its ultimate milestone of ¥40 billion that this recent push was intended to get it over, and it most certainly will, probably by the end of April.

Monster Hunter held pretty well, and has locked up a total above ¥1 billion (~$10 million). Depending on how it holds going into Golden Week at the end of the month, and what it can earn over Golden Week itself, it could still approach ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million). Due to the exchange rate creeping slightly more unfavorable in recent weeks, I don't think it'll be able to surpass the U.S. to become the film's #1 market, but it'll get fairly close.

Signal: The Movie settled for third place, selling 101,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 315 screens, and sold 142,535 admissions over its first three-days in release. Nothing exciting here, maybe even perhaps on the lower-end of expectations given the solid TV ratings for the series, but it's fair enough (the theater count being closer to 300 than 350 may indicate Toho wasn't too confident in it either).

Loved Like a Flower Bouquet was starting to slow down with some regular drops over the past couple of weeks, but it's back again in its tenth weekend with a sub-20% decline. Its run has been extraordinary, and it's now among the Top 10 Leggiest Films (or highest multipliers) for a wide release. And it probably has enough in the tank to add another ¥200 million or so to its cumulative total.

173-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,495,585,950 ($377.60 million) / 28,616,157 Admissions

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Spring Break is fully over now that everything dropped about 50% or higher... except for Demon Slayer, of course, which still managed a ~25% drop despite coming off a giveaway weekend and prior holiday week.

Some of the past Tuesdays are close, but you have to go all the back to February 23rd (a national holiday) to find a bigger Tuesday, or all the way back to January 26th for a bigger non-holiday Tuesday. Several of the Tuesdays in early February are on par with yesterday's estimate.

Reminder: The 17th Annual WOKJ Movie Awards are happening soon, and your ballots are due by Saturday, April 10th.

Even if you haven't seen many films in the past year, participation would still be appreciated from anyone interested in partaking in them this year. Our member base has dropped a lot over the past couple years, especially since the pandemic, so any new members who joined in the last six months to discuss the Japan Box Office and may be interested in participating in our Movie Awards would be very appreciated.

Thread with categories, rules, etc., here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=87973
PM Ballots to Flava'd vs The World here: memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=168

Check the thread for the rules, and ask any related questions such as determining a film's eligibility. No film released after February 28th is eligible, but with many of our new members being outside of the U.S., you may want to check the eligibility of certain "foreign films." Thanks guys.

What is the highest grossing Japanese film that isn't distributed or co-distributed by Toho?

It still remains Antarctica (Nankyoku Monogatari), which was released back in 1983 by Nippon Herald which is now controlled by Kadokawa.

It was a huge success, the first ever Japanese "uber-blockbuster", becoming the first Japanese film to ever earn a distributor income of over ¥5 billion (¥5.9 billion) in the market, and only the second overall after Jaws (1975). In gross, it earned a whopping ¥11 billion on 8.8 million admissions. It's still the only non-Toho domestic release to gross over ¥10 billion.

Antarctica was the #1 highest-grossing film Japanese film for 14 years until Princess Mononoke surpassed it.

I'll actually post a history of #1 films in the market here this afternoon since it's quite possible that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train may very well be the last one in our lifetimes due to the drastic population decline already in effect (2020 had the lowest pop. since 1995, 2030 is projected to be the lowest since the 1975, 2050 projected to be the lowest since 1960, etc.).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (04/02-03); Charts Upd
I made a few errors in the post above talking about Antarctica. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released 7 months earlier, not the other way around which I presumed, so the above post has been edited.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Timeline of All-Time #1 Films
Yesterday, Dolby Cinema announced that they would extend the showtime for Mugen Train from 4/23 to 5/6 due to its popularity. Do you think this decision will help the movie reach 41 billion Yen?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Timeline of All-Time #1 Films
I'd hold off really expecting anything beyond when it reaches ¥40 billion. They're going to keep it playing on enough seats/screens (especially premium formats like Dolby) until it at the very least gets there, but I can see them mostly letting it start to drop off after that point, making reaching any other marks in increments of ¥1 billion very difficult.

¥40 billion is for sole bragging rights of claiming it, and anything beyond that is meaningless. Similar to what Toho did with Spirited Away in the Spring of 2002 to get it above ¥30 billion. It was already the biggest film ever, but getting to ¥30 billion was within reach so they expanded it following its Oscar win in order to get it there after a few weeks. Once it hit that mark, it immediately dropped back out of the top 10 and ended up earning a little over ¥300 million more.

Extending the Dolby Cinema screenings through Golden Week now will help in their efforts of getting it to the mark over the holiday frame in case it's still short by then. And then it'll have around 6 or 7 weeks left after reaching ¥40 billion to add anything substantial to its total afterwards.

175-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,533,585,950 ($377.95 million) / 28,642,657 Admissions

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Any remaining schools that were still on Spring Break are back in session now to begin the new school year. The drop off looks huge, of course, because it naturally is following a holiday period. The Thursday is about on par with the set of weekdays the week prior to Spring Break and even the week before that, so it's very good/stable.

So from this point on, it's just a waiting game as we're nearing that final stretch period. And it'll be a decently "long" waiting game to get up to ¥40 billion, but it'll likely occur in the last week of April, or at the start of May (during Golden week).

Following a holiday that's a strong Thursday. It's amazing how the movie has stabilized now.
