Due to how the dates aligned, the two weeks sort of meshed together like back in 2015. New Year is falling over the weekend, so a lot of its business was pushed forward to this week, meaning this week is abnormally strong, like back in 2015. And in 2015, the holidays ended almost at the start of next week (January 5th), so the week saw sharp declines. That'll likely happen again this year, but with the extended break, the drops shouldn't be as high, but next week will certainly be weaker as the extension is intended for people to travel back to work/school over a week timeframe versus one-day.

I posted this before New Year to explain what was going to happen this week so everyone understood why the declines we're seeing now are normal. And schools started back on Wednesday, so that's why Tuesday was stronger. And we've learned that the extended break wasn't really a thing since the Government wasn't attempting to enforce it upon businesses, just recommending businesses to do so.

Also, we do need to include COVID into the analysis moving forward. Cases are rising (almost 6,000 announced yesterday) and a state of emergency is going to be announced tomorrow in four prefectures. But again, no lockdown is expected and no businesses are expected to close; rather it'll be further measures (like closing earlier) to help prevent the spread for most or all of the month. And we don't know if theaters will be requested to follow any of these measures until tomorrow.

That said, even if absolutely nothing is mentioned above theaters tomorrow, it's becoming a growing concern among the public, and some are naturally going to refrain from going out and about, which may include going to theaters.

And that's why I was conservative about ¥40Bn

Tomorrow is the Big Day for me, Gintama The Final is coming and I hope that it also had some fan screening here at the very least.
That's two birds in one stone cause I'd be able to watch the movie plus get some goods.

Slam Dunk recieves an anime movie adaptation. This series has a long time huge fanbase in Japan too it seems. Can it break the top 10 all time in Japan? >= ¥15B. If this turns out to be something like Harry Potter 1, we can expect a ¥20B....

Isn't the ¥40Bn milestone already including the worse pandemic situation after the new year week?

Depends if they adapt the last match of the manga
Or just a noncanon material like the other movies.

But I doubt that they will adapt the last match because they said that they want to change the ending.
And if they change the ending, then that would be a spit in the face for Inoue.

If it was a noncanon material, then it wouldn't even beat One Piece movies tbh

There is a lot of uncertainty around it but I believe it might not get to all time record breaking numbers if it not a canon movie and even then its not given.

TOHO stopped presales until midnight of the day so no presale data from now on……
Edit: some theaters still provide presale service so I'll keep tracking

Friday presales: 1455 (presales for 36% theaters, including most busiest locations aren't available)
No idea what tomorrow will look like but I'm thinking ~18k

Gintama: 5951 sold

The state of emergency includes a request for theaters to go back to capacity restrictions (likely 50%) in the four affected prefectures (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama). The declaration is in effect until Feb. 7th.

These prefectures account for at least 75/80% of the box office. When theaters reopened nationwide last June, they moved to 50% capacity in July and remained there until September (some until October). Aeon has been at 50% this entire time.

The box office performed well over the summer and early fall under the 50% restriction (which was nationwide then), so that alone isn't going to impact the box office too much, mostly just limiting opening weekends.

What may hurt business is Covid concerns now among the public as cases have grown considerably this past week. I do expect things to slow down a bit from this weekend until probably March.

That's the total tickets sold in TOHO cinemas but presale for 36% cinemas aren't available until the day starts so the number is deflated

18k tomorrow ? It's not much, especially for a Friday (it will be a drop of almost 90%). The first day below $500k will therefore arrive tomorrow, earlier than expected. I feel like the numbers for the last few days are lower than expected (I knew there was going to be a 50%-60% drop this week but I never imagined 70%-80%), are these the effects of covid ? Finally, I did well to stay conservative with ¥37Bn-¥38Bn.

It's become 100% pointless to project anything now with reservations only allowed the day-off at locations that make up ~75/80% of the box office (in terms of business, not locations), and capacity restrictions beginning this weekend. Not to mention the effect that Covid could be having on the general public to refrain from coming out for awhile.

Finally, we can take this on a day-by-day basis.

You guys worry too much. Let's just enjoy its run on a day-to-day basis and be in awe of the numbers it is still pulling. A lot of openers in the market would be lucky to have 45K admissions and 0.7m Thursday on their opening weeks. Its doing fine and yes COVID would impact it a little but it will also help increase its legs if the demand is still there to watch this movie. At this point in its run DS is not using 100% seats over weekdays anyways so a 50% allocation is fine for now.
