The forum had created some flammy war while I'm gone lmao For me personally, my final total is 40B Nothing more, nothing less. I'll be more than happy if it achieves that. AND will be majorly happy if it surpasses it (45B) just like Jack said. I'd probably go Cr1tikal and say woooh yeah baby while striking a pose lmao Gintama is something that I've been waiting for right at the moment. If Gintama surpasses the totals that I've been envisioning for it, then I'd be extremely happy. |

Cynosure wrote: Or, in the meantime, you could always join my 40 billion prediction. 40B is no longer a prediction its a certainty. After this weekend DS would be well above 34B and with good set of weekdays coming next (won't be as big as last week, but they will still be bigger than usual) so it should reach 35B even before entering next weekend. I see it doing another ¥400m given that its dropping 30% this week. There is just no way it misses another 4.6B from that big of a weekend. |

DON'T SHOOT, I AM NOT ARMED. lmao. Geez man, chillax. I’m not trying to “knock you out,” I’m not gonna shoot. We’re just having a friendly discussion about box office projection here. But I’m sorry, you don’t get to construct your own historical reality simply by saying so. The facts are, you **have** been consistently pessimistic during this run. I can remember dozens of times your projections were on the low end of what people were expecting at that time, and too low for reality. Can’t remember a single time where you went high and got proven right. I’m not going to pretend otherwise just to make you feel better. |

And for a box office enthusiast, it’s useful to recognize when you’re been consistently too low (or too high) on a movie and let that inform your expectations for the rest of the run one way or the other. |

Post subject: | Re: Japan Box Office: A New Year Begins (2021) |
A New Year Begins 2021 Happy New Year! A day late, again, I know. I guess doing this a day late is becoming a tradition. As usual -- THANK YOU to everyone who reads this thread, especially those of you that contribute with discussions here. This is especially true in recent months to all the new posters we saw join up here, many of which I've thanked in the past for being lurkers, but can actually thank this year for also contributing to the discussions had here! And due to the participation of new members and ongoing discussions had by the regulars here, not to mention with the help of a little film called Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, 2020 was a record year for the thread. In fact, it may have been the busiest year for the entire forum in several years: Since January 1st last year, the thread saw 155 new pages consisting of 3,861 new posts, more than double the previous yearly record (just last year). That makes 2020 the most active year for this thread, but the most stunning statistic, once again, was how many views the thread saw over the past year: Regulars, new members, and the remaining lurkers alike (you can join too!) managed to contribute a whopping 898,000 additional views. That's 269,000 more views than last year's record, and accounts for about 32% of the thread's overall view count which is now approaching 2.8 million (it broke 2 million back in March). I even got around to FINALLY updating the first post of this thread after saying I would for over a year! I'm thankful for the traffic, as I'm sure the owners are as well. I still very much enjoy following the Japan box-office, and will continue this into 2021. 2020 Box Office (Pages 509-664; 155 Pages, 3,861 Posts) 2020 Box Office Data: Coming Late-January 2019 Box Office (Pages 437-509; 73 Pages, 1,823 Posts) 2019 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2018 Box Office (Pages 381-437; 56 Pages, 1,383 Posts) 2018 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2017 Box Office (Pages 333-381; 48 Pages, 1,207 Posts) 2017 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2016 Box Office (Pages 282-333; 51 Pages, 1,276 Posts) 2016 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2015 Box Office (Pages 223-282; 59 Pages, 1,466 Posts) 2015 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2014 Box Office (Pages 171-223; 52 Pages, 1,319 Posts) 2014 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2013 Box Office (Pages 131-171; 40 Pages, 986 Posts) 2013 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2012 Box Office (Pages 94-131; 37 Pages, 938 Posts) 2012 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2011 Box Office (Pages 58-94; 36 Pages, 901 Posts) 2011 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show 2010 Box Office (Pages 05-58; 53 Pages, 1,325 Posts) 2010 Box Office Data: Spoiler: show |

I know what it is, obviously, but for being a well-known property, I don't really see much about it. I doubt it flops, but I don't know what sort of potential it has at the moment. I'm going to guess, for now, that it'll do similar numbers as the Precure franchise? I'll look a bit more into it over the week. |

WK3 10 (11) ¥x23,000,000 ($223,000), -15%, ¥500,000,000 ($4.8 million), Tengaramon (Giggly Box) WK4 11 (09) ¥x22,000,000 ($215,000), -51%, ¥365,000,000 ($3.5 million), Kamen Rider Zero-One: REAL x TIME (Toei) WK3 A bit of a subdued New Year's Weekend in terms of increases/decreases, but based on these estimates, this weekend is still only down 4% versus 2020, and actually up 3% versus 2019, and that's with almost no Hollywood support. New Year's Weekend is one where more adult-driven films thrive, and there weren't really any films to benefit much from the adults being on holiday this year. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train earned its 12th-consecutive weekend atop the box office, and delivered a great hold coming off of its unprecedented 133% increase last weekend to achieve the second biggest twelfth-weekend ever, even holding better than two of the previous post-giveaway weekends (and this weekend is up almost 60% compared to its 10th weekend). As mentioned, it has claimed practically all the records besides those it'll be vying for on the longevity charts, such as most weeks in the Top 5/10 and such. There's been some debate on where it could be heading, but it's still a bit early to project an accurate figure, but I believe we can expect it to either approach or just exceed ¥40 billion ($380 million+) based on what we know at the moment. New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms was one of the films to benefit from the New Year's Weekend, due to appealing more toward adults, remaining flat with last weekend. It has performed well since its great opening weekend, and is still on track to exceed the ¥4 billion (~$40 million) milestone. Poupelle of Chimney Town enjoyed a good hold in its sophomore frame, and keeps it chances of reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million) alive and well. The Promised Neverland held a lot better than early numbers suggested on Saturday, and winded up with a pretty solid third weekend. A ¥2 billion (~$20 million) total isn't locked, but it remains likely. Most live-action Shonen adaptations stall out in the ¥1-1.5 billion range, so this one's going to outperform many of them. Pokemon: Coco couldn't avoid the typical harsh second weekend drop the franchise experiences, and actually had one of the bigger second weekend declines in the long-running series. Pokemon's popularity has been on the decline over the better part of the last decade (fewer and fewer children in the country), especially the film franchise and anime series', so this is probably pretty expected. And, since it's appeal is almost exclusively towards families/children, the hardest hit demographic from COVID, it's likely suffering from those groups avoiding theaters like they have for every other younger-skewing film. Peninsula had a decent debut, in my opinion, as it wasn't likely to be another Parasite or anything. It looks much more gory and violent for a horror film versus the more appealing ones that center around the suspense or thriller genres instead. |

It's interesting how the Pokemon franchise has almost died in everything except video games where it's still breaking records (one of the fastest selling and best selling Switch games in Japan I believe). Apparently a Demon Slayer video game on the PS4 is planned for release in 2021. I wonder how that will do. |
