One more question about the presale system in Japan. Do they often reveal the presale number for weekdays? Or just for weekend?

Saturday only (start of the weekend). The only exception was for Demon Slayer's opening day because of how ridiculously high it was. That opening day is now only the film's fifth biggest day now, by the way. I don't even think its opening day will be among its ten biggest days. :funny:

Next Saturday and Sunday will be higher, making its opening day its 7th biggest day. And November 3rd is a national holiday, that day could beat its opening day, bumping it to 8th. So just one more weekend to knock its opening day out of its ten biggest days. Very doable.

Impressive number would have been cherry on top of it managed to top last Sunday but this is an amazing result which none of us expected after it's gargantuan opening weekend.

Note: Its estimated SECOND weekend is easily the second biggest overall weekend ever, only behind its own opening weekend. But it's also about 35% higher than the old OPENING weekend record before it was broken last weekend, too.

Also, its estimated ten-day/two-week total, new record obviously, is 119% higher than the previous ten-day/two-week total record. 119%.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
You probably saw that I had the Fastest Films to ¥10 Billion up for a minute or two before deleting it. I'm trying to find how many days it took Titanic, because I saw it up on 5ch a day or two ago and didn't copy it... It's one of the few films that earned over ¥10 billion absent from the list, so I'd really like to add it after all this time.

It's WAY down the list, I think it was over 100 days, but I still want to include it at long last.

Either way, I'll re-post the list in the next 15-minutes and add it later if I happen upon it again.

Are there some websites to check the seats to know if monday will have a good drop or not from last week?

The usual locations provides the number of seats at ~70% of the market. But to get reservation status, you'll just need to check individual theaters. But reservations, while popular, aren't as high on weekdays until the evening hours.

And I cannot find when Titanic hit 10 billion, but it was very high (still thinking 100+ days). I'll add it when I come across it again.

Fastest to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster Status):

10 - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
25 - Spirited Away (2001)
28 - Your Name. (2016)
28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
31 - Ponyo (2008)
33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
34 - Weathering With You (2019)
35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
37 - Frozen (2014)
37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
40 - Frozen II (2019)
41 - Aladdin (2019)
42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
43 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004)
45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
47 - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
50 - Avatar (2009)
52 - Toy Story 3 (2010)
52 - Finding Nemo (2003)
52 - The Last Samurai (2003)
53 - The Wind Rises (2013)
53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
53 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
57 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
74 - Toy Story 4 (2019)
74 - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)
107 - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

Note: Not enough data available to include: Titanic (data incoming later), Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Independence Day, Bayside Shakedown, and Antarctica. All of these would be very late in reaching the mark though, at or near the bottom of the list (100+ days).

How does ¥40 billion (~$380 million+) / 30 million+ admissions sound to you guys?

The general agreement is that its chances of beating Spirited Away (¥30.8 billion / 23.5 million admissions) are greater than 50% now. It's over a third of the way there after 10-days, and it's currently earning 3x what Spirited Away grossed.

Awesome. With what it will do overseas that should be enough to eventually make it the highest grossing movie of 2020 I believe.

In case in comes down to the wire, doesn't it technically have to beat Spirited Away's updated total with the re-release earnings?

It depends on what you want to consider as its total, honestly. Toho has reported (in an actual article) the re-release earnings from earlier this Summer as separate earnings. This is the official stance right now. So, technically, Demon Slayer "just" needs to do ¥30.805 billion unless they would decide to add the re-release at the end of the year. Otherwise, it'll be targeting ¥31.6 billion.

How about an even crazier record, top worldwide gross 2020?

Though it kinda reminds me of Avengers Endgame where it debut $109 million more than Force Awakens, yet it failed to be top domestic film, let along breaking one billion domestic barrier which everyone think will be easy around the opening week.

How about an even crazier record, top worldwide gross 2020?

Though it kinda reminds me of Avengers Endgame where it debut $109 million more than Force Awakens, yet it failed to be top domestic film, let along breaking one billion domestic barrier which everyone think will be easy around the opening week.

Was Endgame's second weekend 35% higher than The Force Awakens' opening weekend? Or was its 10-day total 119% higher than the previous 10-day record? :mer:

Not a fair comparison due to the markets being much different, but statistically speaking, Demon Slayer just earned a second weekend of $347 million and is up to $1.18 billion (+119% versus The Force Awakens' 10-day total) after 10-days in comparison.

Otherwise, it'll be targeting ¥31.6 billion.

That's interesting. Do you know if Titanic's ¥26.2 billion includes the 2012 re-release? If it does, then there is precedent for including re-releases into a film's total in Japan (they already do for U.S. and worldwide grosses).

That look like a challenge which I'll gladly accept! I'll be team Spirited Away>Demon Slayer, but since the odd is against me, Demon Slayer has to win in both money and admissions.

Sounds good.

And I'll finally get to post a Showdown with Spirited Away for the first time ever. I've included it in some showdowns in the past including multiple films, and only just for fun as the target film was mostly competing against something else.

It does not. Check here (official all-time list, not just my own): http://www.kogyotsushin.com/archives/alltime/ It's been determined that re-releases are counted separately in the market.

Don't you know that Japan likes to be different? 2-Day Weekends, theaters being open 22-hours in Shinjuku sometimes, before the year 2000 only the distributor income a film achieved was reported (not its box office gross unless by the distributor), late-November through December releases being added to the NEXT year at the box-office? :funny:

Titanic is at ¥26.65 billion if its re-release was included though.

A lot of that Records list is going to begin repeating (it already has) over again, especially the daily records. Let me know if it's understandable and I'll try to reword it if it's confusing.

Can't really avoid seeing parts of the final trailer released last night, so I watched it. The official upload of the new/final trailer is already near 4 million views after 7 hours, too.

It's great, of course, just 100% aimed at manga-readers up to volume 8. Which there are clearly MANY of (record 72 million physical-only copies sold in the past 11-months, and over 100 million in circulation) in Japan, so it won't be as spoiler-filled for a decent part of the audience. And it'll most definitely get fans and new viewers/readers alike hyped even more.

But to members here who haven't read the manga to volume 8, I wouldn't suggest seeking the trailer out. Thank goodness they saved it until after the first week of release at least.
