>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted atop the box-office, unsurprisingly, selling 671,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 962 screens; it sold 1,018,851 admissions since opening on Friday. Overall, this is a strong start, one that was probably deflated from a few weary fans who really disliked Star Wars: The Last Jedi (yes, it was very disliked in Japan, too).

But, how does this debut stack up to other Star Wars films? Mostly good, even if it's the weakest opening in the main series of films since the OT. That sounds bad, but its debut still came pretty close to its predecessors. It's more accurate to compare franchise films to each other from the day they opened, so looking at the 3-day total, its opening is: 16% less than Revenge of the Sith; 3% less than The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi; and just 2% less than Attack of the Clones. So... despite being the lowest opener among its predecessors, it's not by very much.

I would be really surprised if this film, the final film in the saga, is more frontloaded than The Last Jedi, so I think a total of ¥7.5 billion ($70 million) should be nearly locked up. I expect a run more closely to the other films in the series, so look for a total between ¥8-9 billion ($75/80 million).

NOTE: All the charts with the weekend estimate for The Rise of Skywalker on the last page have been edited with the actual.

>Frozen II dropped a little higher than expected, but still not high enough to raise any alarms. It's fallen behind the original at this point, and it won't be catching up, not even close. But that's not unexpected. It's now entering the holiday break and will see some impressive numbers over the next couple weeks, so look for its cumulative total to really grow soon. I expect it'll be around ¥11-12 billion ($100-110 million) by January 5th, the last day of the holiday period, and finish around the ¥15 billion ($140 million) milestone.

>My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, the second film in the popular anime/manga series, debuted in third place, selling 224,000 admissions over the weekend across 313 screens; it sold 332,409 admissions since opening on Friday. The film closely followed the weekend performance of the original, dropping just 1% versus its predecessor's debut. Look for a finish between ¥1.5-2.0 billion ($15-20 million). The franchise has peaked, but it also hasn't really lost much, if any, popularity since manga sales and TV ratings also remain stable.

>Kamen Rider Reiwa: The First Generation, the first film of Japan's Reiwa Era, debuted in fourth place with 195,939 admissions over the weekend on 328 screens. The film serves as a tribute of sorts to the prior generation of Kamen Rider films, and is the 62nd overall theatrical release in the overall film franchise. Expect a total just above ¥1 billion ($10 million).

>And finally, and with great honor, I can announce that How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World debuted in 10th place! It is the first film in the series to reach the Top 10, with the second film not even receiving a theatrical release due to how badly DreamWorks animated films were bombing in the market. Clearly, the final Dragon film didn't gross very much, but breaking the Top 10 and going on to become the highest grossing film in the series is a wonderful sendoff for the franchise in the market.

I'll post Monday's Estimates later tonight. Schools let out early on Monday, so Monday itself wasn't huge (some Mon.-to.-Mon. increases still though), but Tuesday onward will see serious week-to-week increases for some films (anything skewing young or towards teens).

And be sure to check out the 2019 - Top Grossing Films post above. A lot of final numbers were released this past week, so see where your favorites ended up (look for the [F] for days in release).

Can a movie have a (strong) bump during christmas week, then it continue to have a (strong) bump on new year week?
Has this happened before?

It's rare to see a film enjoy a big boost during Christmas Week, and then go on to have a bigger boost during New Year. For this to occur, it basically take a WOM behemoth to be playing.

However, a film can certainly enjoy a big boost during Christmas Week, and then see a similar, or slightly better, boost during New Year. A film just needs to be appealing to a wide demographic to receive the boost that both individual weeks provide (Christmas Week helps younger skewing films / New Year helps older skewing films).

And if you're wondering how Frozen II will perform, I expect it to have a slightly better Christmas Week than New Year since it's skewing younger, but not so young that it won't benefit during New Year as well.

Christmas Week 2019 - Daily Estimates (12/23-27):

Monday (12/23)

¥x07,000,000 ($x65,000), +46%, ¥231,000,000 ($2.2 million), Yo-Kai Watch Jam: Yo-Kai Academy Y - Can a Cat be a Hero? (Toho) Day 11

Note: A lot of schools had their last day of the semester on Monday, and just let out early, so the day itself wasn't too impressive. Tuesday onward, especially Wednesday through Friday, will be stronger, particularly for younger skewing films. Except for Jumanji perhaps...it nearly collapsed in its second weekend and its Monday number is abysmal.

I just looked at the numbers from usual locations, today so far Frozen 2 doesn't recieve as much bump as some other animated movies below it (some of them get +300%, +400%)... so if this christmas week, Frozen 2 doesn't revieve so much bump and new year week it is the same,....

Animated films don't appeal to one particular demographic in Japan. In fact, they have the most diverse audience in the market.

Frozen II appeals broad enough that its Christmas Week boost won't be as strong, percentage-wise, as Yo-Kai Watch for example, because Yo-Kai Watch appeals exclusively (95%+, no joke) to children under 10-years-old. Frozen II is still up 100% today versus last week, certainly nothing to be disappointed with (although it'll probably finish the day at +70/80%).

Lupin III: The First is also animated, and it's currently down today at the moment versus last Tuesday because it has more appeal towards adults. Adult-driven films don't receive much of a Christmas Week boost.

This week will be a good example to demonstrate why it's nearly impossible to project the Japan box-office in the long term, because of how greatly one film's audience can differ from another's despite sharing the same or similar genre. The Top 10 today, as of 1PM, currently has a film down 70% versus last week, and one up 435%. These are extremes that aren't seen in any other major market to my knowledge.

Can the awards from Oscars, Golden Globe,.... boost number for movies in Japan?
In case of Frozen 2, the only award it can obtain is "best original song" I think, because "best animated feature" has high chance to belong to Toy Story 4... Is the "best original song" for a musical animated movie enough to help its late run?

EDIT: well, it looks like today really will +70-80%, how could you know it !!!! It is quite dissapointing :( which can be the bump in some next days?

The bump for Frozen 2 seems good to me. You can't compare or expect the same percentage increases other animated films are getting for reasons Corpse has mentioned above. Frozen 2 had pretty strong weekdays last week so its increases will be lower this week, whereas the others like Yo-Kai Watch were basically dead on weekdays and will see gigantic percentage increases respectively.

Award season can certainly boost films, but typically only for ones that are willing multiple awards, or and/or the major awards. Best Original Song isn't going have an impact, especially since the soundtrack isn't popular this time around.

The dayparts that benefit the most during the holiday week are in the morning and afternoon, since those dayparts were largely empty last week due to school being in session. The evening and night business will still be stronger than normal, too, but the week-to-week increases naturally lower as the day progresses.

I'll link you to last year's Christmas Week and New Year Week daily estimates to give you an idea of what % changes look like, and which films generally enjoy the biggest gains during the holidays:

Click HERE for last year's Daily Estimates during Christmas Week.

Click HERE for last year's Daily Estimates during New Year Week.

Just scroll down both pages a bit to see them. A 70/80% increase is a good/great bump.

Forgot to post this yesterday.
Now, before anyone (I see you Danhjpn ;) ) begins calling this a bad fifth weekend for Frozen II, it kind of is, but it's also misleading. Most of the films on this list entered a holiday frame already, or did in their fifth week. Frozen II hasn't reached any holidays yet, and its sixth and seventh weekends could come in nearly as high, or even higher than its fifth here. Its rankings on the Biggest Sixth and Seventh Weekend list will look more impressive than this one.

Honestly, the underlining reason that Frozen II's numbers look a bit underwhelming after its first two weeks is because of the unfavorable November release date. It's had to go almost six-weeks with zero support. Nothing to boost its weekends, nothing to boost its weekdays. That's changing this week, although it is coming a bit later in its run, after having burned off a good bit of interest. So, while it will benefit a lot of Christmas/New Year, it won't be as much as it could have been with a different release date.

Hmm definitely does seem like Disney should have stuck to the March release date.

Although I would imagine not having a song catch on in the same way as LIG is also a comparative hindrance.

Can Frozen 2 continue to have an increase at around 25-50% in the new year week from the numbers of this christmas week?

Probably, for the most part. Next Monday will be higher, but next Tuesday will likely be lower (New Year's Eve is the only weak day during the holiday period). Wednesday through Friday will almost certainly be higher since they're three consecutive national holidays.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Christmas Week 2019 - Daily Estimates
Hi, how much can we expect day-by-day for frozen 2 and SW9 from 26th December until 5th January ?

For frozen 2 something like : 1-1-1-2-2-1-1-0.5-1-1-2-2 and something like $90M-$95M by 5th January ? And I wanted to know what is lock actually for frozen 2, Is $130M or $140M lock or not ? And if Frozen 2 is at $90M by 5th January can we still hope for $140M and if Frozen 2 is at $100M or more, can we hope for $150M+ ? What do you think right now (good or bad feelings for F2 ?)

And for SW9 I really don't know, what can we expect by 5th January and by end of his run ?

It should be over $100 million by January 5th, perhaps as high as $110 million. As for what's a lock, $120 million is a lock, $130 million is close to a lock (say, 90%), and $140 million is probably 50/50 at the moment. It's behaving very good during the first stages of the holiday period, so I'm feeling confident in it finishing strong.

Star Wars IX is harder to gauge right now since it just opened, but I imagine it'll be around $45 million, maybe $50 million by January 5th. I'm still projecting it'll finish around $70/80 million, but nothing so far has really happened to change that projection since it's so early in its run.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Christmas Week 2019 - Daily Estimates
Thank you for that answers Corpse, This weekdays during holidays for TROS and Frozen 2 seems bad, bof or good according to you ? How much can we expect for 3-day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) for TROS and Frozen 2 ? And is the 2th week of holidays (29th-5th January) stronger then the 1th week in terms of weekdays and weekend ? You said that next week is one of the most important week for the box office and cinemas in Japan no ? And do you have news about the French movie Nicky Larson ?

PS : Is there a website to follow day by day the box office in Japan ?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Christmas Week 2019 - Daily Estimates
The weekdays so far are good. Star Wars IX is looking to almost earn its opening weekend gross from Mon.-Fri., and Frozen II is looking at a 50% increase from Mon.-Fri. over its fifth weekend.

Monday and Tuesday were so-so since Monday was still largely a school day (just early dismissal), and Tuesday was Christmas Eve, but all the numbers since Wednesday have been great. And remember that Friday is a weekday in Japan. It'll be stronger than Thursday and either on par with, or slightly stronger than, Wednesday this week.

The last weekend of December can be a bit tricky since it falls between two sets of holiday weekdays, meaning sometimes films appear to "disappoint" relative to their weekdays. Saturday and Sunday won't be much stronger than any of the past few weekdays (Wednesday through Friday), except for the more adult-driven films since their audience still had to work this past week and had to wait until the weekend to go to the movies.

Christmas Week - Strong for all films, but strongest for younger skewing films.
New Year Week - Strong for all films, but strongest for older skewing films.

And the weekend after New Year is typically very strong, and can often see increases since audiences flock to the theaters before school/work resumes.

Nicky Larson debuted, I believe, in 9th or 10th a few weeks ago (just go back a few pages, though maybe several now) but fell outside the Top 10 afterward and hasn't done too well since its first week.

There isn't a Japanese website that posts the daily numbers for the box-office. This thread and the box office discussion thread(s) on 2chan (in Japanese) are the best out there. And I know you guys really, really want to know where a film is headed in gross, but Japan is a very leggy, wait-and-see market, where the average multiplier is 7 or 8, but could be as low as 4 or as high as 40. It simply takes time and patience before a potential final gross for most films can be determined.

NOTE:
I've gone over these same topics quite a few times over the past week(s). I don't mind to explain them again, it's just becoming time consuming and not something I'd particularly like to do every few days... So, please check the last few pages of this thread to see if your questions have already been covered before asking again. Most probably already have been.

So Frozen 2 is gonna be about ¥1b behind Weathering with You at the end of the weekend which more than I would've expected. Is it even possible to make it up? WWY still did pretty well (if not spectacular) after the Summer holidays ended. I don't really see any reason why Frozen 2 would perform much better over the coming weeks.
