Apparantly Elemental was viewed 26.4 million times on Disney+.

Hilarious cause had this gone straight to streaming they would've been out of hundreds of millions of dollars... and it had a solid theater run and a big debut on streaming... lol just emphasizes how fucking stupid that decision was.

Elemental did $154M. Turning Red was the second most streamed movie of 2022.

Encanto was #1.

Turning Red almost certainly could have done $200M+ and Encanto definitely feels like it would have become a Frozen $400M+ movie in regular times. The sequel could quadruple the original.

So I just read that Pixar is re-releasing their pandemic movies this spring including Turning Red?

Disney doesn't have much left now until May in terms of releases (whoops), so curious to see how those movies do that deserved theatrical releases. Hope Turning Red pulls a surprise!

Cute. Will probably see them but doubtful they'll do anything noteworthy.

Its such a shame we'll never know how Turning Red would've done with The Batman doing well at the time. This rerelease will probably make less than 15m lol

It's a bit late, Disney.

So the end result of all the mismanagement by Disney is finally happening, Pixar is apparently cutting almost 20% of their team.

Disney animated movies for the next three years:

Feb. 2024 Turning Red re-release
Mar. 2024 Luca re-release
Jun. 2024 Inside Out 2
Nov. 2024 Moana 2
Jun. 2025 Elio
Nov. 2025 Zootopia 2
*Mar. 2026 Untitled TBD - Probably a sequel. Encanto 2?
*Jun. 2026 Untitled TBD - Probably Toy Story 5
*Nov. 2026 Disney animation - Untitled -> Probably Frozen 3

So from my guess Disney will have 1 original animated movie until 2027 at the earliest. 8 sequels or re-releases. All about the $$$. :sweat:

Well, their original movies have either bombed or done lukewarm business the last few years. You can debate the quality hurting them, but either way audiences just haven't been turning out for them. Hard to justify producing original films at the moment.

I saw that Disney (Iger I guess) say they will be focusing on their larger brands moving forward, releasing fewer original or lesser known films/series, so probably gonna see a lot of sequels/renewals to established hit films/series of the past for a good while.

So Disney just had another shakeup with Sean Bailey exiting As President Of Walt Disney Motion Picture Studios; Searchlight’s David Greenbaum Takes Over.

Bailey was big for the live actions so this sort of feels like Disney wants to make more original IP again? I'm not yet sure how to interpret this. Greenbaum has been a part of Poor Things success so feels like Disney is realizing the live action fad may be near it's end?

Disney just made a bunch of release date changes:

The Amateur Nov. 8, 2024 -> April 11, 2025
Nightbitch Undated -> Dec. 6, 2024
Moana June 27, 2025 -> July 10, 2026
Untitled movie removed from July 10, 2026
Mandalorian + Grogu -> May 22, 2026
Toy Story 5 -> June 19, 2026
Tron: Ares -> Oct. 10, 2025

Looks like 2026 is going to be a big year for them.

At least there is more distance between Moana 2 and live action Moana

I still feel like Disney could get caught bombing cause they released a ton of 2010s style franchise reboot/CGI remake/superhero multiverse/etc. films in 25 and 26 when people have moved on to a new era.

Pixar laid off 6% last year and today announced another 14% were let go. The biggest in their company history. Shifting purely to theatrical content.

Know Disney is in cost control mode but from staff being demoralized over the last 4 years seems like there's going to be a transitional period for them to get back to stable. Interesting they'd do it so close to before Inside Out 2's release. Get the team to finish final prep on the film and then send them on their way sadly.

Gave an opening for other animation houses to bring up their A game. Puss In Boots (DW/Universal), Spider-verse (Sony), TMNT (Paramount), Super Mario and Minions 2 (Illumination), etc.

2 of the top 3 films of 2023 were animated. Top Disney animated film was #17 (Elemental).
#6 for Minions 2 in 2022. Puss In Boots at #10. Lightyear at #15.

Really hope Inside Out 2 overperforms as I don't think Pixar can handle another disappointment after Lightyear (2022) and Elemental (2023) back to back. At least Elemental pulled $500M and became a streaming sensation.

... so fucking stupid lolol

Pixar was successful due to its storytelling. The fact that what they got out of the pandemic era is to focus less on unique storytelling is... something.

I heard they're toying with Finding Nemo 3 and Incredibles 3

I don't think they realize how massive a Turning Red sequel will be. And mass commercialization objectives (Lightyear spinoff no one asked for with an Avenger recast in the role) is what got them here in the first place. Expanding a universe for Toy Story unnecessarily. I think Pixar's leadership is looking more out of touch here and maybe it wasn't just Chapek who was the problem. Pixar is just following Illumination now and should have been Disney/Pixar that made a Spiderverse type movie vs Sony.

Disney is right that their original films, for the most part, aren’t going to be enormous blockbusters out of the gate. But eventually their IP will all be run dry. They need to take some risks and build goodwill if they ever want to be able to create even a success like Coco or a Bug’s Life again.

Problem is Disney has a lack of truly good creative types right now.
