I would love a Lando movie as a fan, but “SJW buzz” doesn’t mean much (Wrinkle in Time, Ghostbusters)

I think they had to to go forward. I See Lando/Obi Wan/Darth Maul/ cameo with Han and Chewie film.

Yeah where to start? The list of what went wrong is long.

- Identity politics/gender politics. One of the writers of Solo, Jon Kasdan, recently admitted on twitter they purposely inserted gender and identity politics into the Solo film.
- A very miscast film
- Poorly chosen writers and final director
- Arrogantly ignoring, dismissing and criticizing hardcore fans

The release date has little to do with it. Let's look at Marvel as an example Infinity War was released roughly 2.5 months after Black Panther. So there was LESS THAN 3 months of a gap between two huge Marvel films, yet such a close release schedule DID NOT affect either film at the box office. Both films are absolutely massive box office hits. Again, release date has little to do with Solo's failure. If people wanted to see it, then worldwide audiences would have come out for Solo regardless of release date.

As a fan I was so excited for The Last Jedi, and it was an incredible disappointment, on par with The Force Awakens as disappointing. Actually maybe even more so than TFA because I had such high expectations for The Last Jedi. Since the release of The Last Jedi, it is clear many fans are now revolting against the current state of affairs with Lucasfilm and Disney. This also begins to affect casual audiences. Hardcore fans are always the trendsetters. This is clear with the flop numbers for Solo we are seeing.

I think Episode 9 will truly reveal what went wrong with Solo.

If it meets / beats The Last Jedi (which I hope and expect it to), then it truly just narrows it down to the following:
-No one wanted a Solo movie. They see Star Wars to see epic stories, not TV-level side stories.
-Audiences got used to Star Wars being in December. Just like Harry Potter's first move to the summer, this struggled with the change.

Yep a lot of this should be settled with EP9 but then again I don't think diehards will ever agree on shorter time-gap EVER.

In this era where audiences are hooked on serialised television, binge watching shows, turning up to theatres a few times a year to watch the latest MCU instalment etc - the chances of a stand-alone spinoff (with limited prospects to begin with) doing well are greatly diminished.

Agreed if this Solo was somehow connected to the main series than the audience would have been interested. I believe Rogue One being the first of the spin-offs audience gave it a chance but then realized that its not in anyway relevant to the main series and could easily skip those.

Uh well HP3 out-opened the first two movies and dropped less than $100m WW from Chamber of Secrets. The small impact was more that it didn't get to benefit from holiday legs and faced more competition in the summer. Nothing near Solo.

HP3 dropped because families understood this franchise wasn't for small kids, this chapter is where it adopted more serious and dark themes, and also became more interesting for the non-readers

Regardless Solo's decrease is WAY TOO MUCH to be compared to HP series.

I'm confused. HP2 dropped 18% from HP1, while HP3 dropped 5% from HP2. Why was it even brought up?

I brought it up - that was my mistake. I for some reason had it my head that HP3 dropped more than that. My bad.

Solo is going to make less than Tomb Raider overseas

Solo won't finish inside the top 15 highest-grossing films of the year. How embarrassing.

Last year $400m wasn't enough to reach Top 20 and I think that would be the fate for Solo as well this year. And to think last three movies in the franchise were among Top 2 movies of last three years WW.

Underrated story - Ron Howard has been a disaster for years at the box-office. His last four movies before this was Inferno - 34.3 mil domestic (Underrated bad performance? That's fucking atrocious for the third film in the Da Vinci Code/Angels and Demons franchise, even if it did decent WW), In the Heart of the Sea - 25 mil domestic on 100 mil budget, Rush - 26.9 mil, The Dilemma - 48.4. After In the Heart of the Sea he should have been done with bigger budget films and rebuilt his career in lower budget Oscar films

Is it going to struggle to reach $200m? Just had a brief look at yesterday's numbers and it's still $18m off and only making $1.6m per day. Incredibles 2 should take admissions away from it, but Jurassic World 2 definitely will. If it gets past $200m, it won't get much further. Maybe $210m?

Solo has just got to win the award for "Most Disappointing Performance" in next year's Maggots.

It will pass $200m but not by much. Shocking when a film like this could have shitted $400m in its sleep if handled correctly.

Such a shame indeed. The cast & crew did awesome job and don’t deserve this.

The international gross has to be the biggest WTF about this.

I mean sure, but Solo flopping this badly also means the Star Wars brand is damaged and Disney won't be making nearly as much from the future films in the franchise as it though it would be. They care, trust me.
