I don't know, that looks pretty great for Uprising considering how shit it looks and how it wasn't even made for the US market. Will probably drop 66% next weekend but it can carve out a respectable gross to add to its worldwide kitty.

So Pacific Rim and Tomb Raider post equally disappointing, but not embarassing numbers.

Weekend Estimates From Deadline

Pacific Rim - 26.6 Million
(10.1 Million Friday)
Black Panther - 16.3 Million
I Can Only Imagine - 12.8 Million
Tomb Raider - 10 Million
Sherlock Gnomes - 9.7 Million
(Ouch)
A Wrinkle In Time - 7.9 Million
Love, Simon - 7.6 Million
Paul, Apostle of Christ - 4.9 Million
Midnight Sun - 4 Million
Game Night - 4 Million
Unsane - 3.5 Million

Ignoring the budget that is really strong for Pacific Rim 2. Well above what most expected.

They waited too long to release a sequel to Gnomeo & Juliet. That number is really embarrassing for Sherlock.

Could have been so much worse for Unsane. Not bad. Plus it was cheap to make.

Expected for all of the openers except PR2 and Sherlock Gnomes.

Strong holds for Simon and I Can Only Imagine, though I did think both could hold better this weekend. Especially I Can Only Imagine with the theater boost.

That is indeed poor for Gnomes but the signs were all pointing to a weak OW. It should still do well overall with a price tag of $59m.

Updated the first post with Friday numbers.

Quick Notes:
Another solid hold by BP though it dropped bigger than last weekend, I guess the direct competition of black superhero in form of PRU made that happen.
Isle of Dogs did great but nothing suggests it will breakout or have a LONG run.
The Greatest Showman will take over Chicago this weekend.
Jumanji's numbers were not reported on Friday might not be a good sign for its late legs specially with the digital release
Midnight Sun and Unsane are quite close today but I guess the gap will only get wider over the weekend.

I think Isle of Dogs did amazing. I mean 1.7 Million from just 27 locations? That's great. Not unexpected really though it's more than I would have thought it would do given that it was wider than most Anderson films debut. I was predicting a little over 1.2 Million. Should be headed for over 20 Million which is great for something like it. When I had the trailer for it during Love, Simon on Tuesday a couple of people sitting around me mentioned how awful it looked. Definitely a more niche animated film. Anderson's faithful following will turn out for it though.

To do on par with Fantastic Mr. Fox numbers from 9 years ago would be very disappointing for it, not great. The marketing budget must’ve been huge for this movie considering its trailer was in front of every movie ’ve seen from this year. Regardless of big theater chain, arthouse theater chain, or small local cinema; if the movie was a standard studio release, blockbuster, foreign film, or indie movie; the trailer was unavoidable,

Grand Budapest Hotel numbers should be its benchmark for success,

While it has an impressive voice cast it doesn't have the star power of Streep and Clooney that Fox had. This is also animated but not the kind most kids will be into. Banking on all of the adults that made Grand Budapest a hit seems crazy. Not all will be into animated films and not all were even Anderson fans but rather came out due to reviews being glowing. I don't think this should be expected to come anywhere near that film's gross.

Anderson movies almost always breakout over OW (and have huge PTA's), which is why I think this opening for IoD is great but not a breakout. I feel it won't do much in expansion though it should do well than other stop-animation movies this year like Early Man.
