Dunkirk multiplier from its 2nd weekend was 4.13. Inception's multiplier from its 2nd weekend was about 4.5. The latter had significantly more competition than Dunkirk did and was coming off a bigger 2nd weekend and still managed a sizable better multiplier.

Dunkirk should get a lot of credit for opening to 50m. That isn't an easy task. It's a very strong opening weekend for the type of movie it is. But the type of audiences it attracts, the Oscar buzz, and the complete emptiness of August should be factors that make its legs seem fairly weak.

I think the overall end total around 185m (and 500m WW) is very respectable total that shows Nolan is far ahead of almost everyone else in being able to attract a mass audience to any type of movie. It definitely validates his "blockbuster aueter" title.

But the legs to me don't seem that strong given the factors.

Yeah, its performance has been remarkable. No other director could pull off such a feat with a creatively delivered war movie with no stars.

Nolan needs to helm something with popular source material behind it again. I was hoping he'd be the Episode 9 director. internet would break. truly.

He doesn't, but Bond will probably always be there on the table for him if he wants it.

Why in the world would he want that?

This is also one of the most annoying thing about geeks. "You're an interesting filmmaker who excels at original work - please attach yourself to Part 11 of this movie series!"

The performance has been very good. Especially considering word of mouth isn't really out of this world.

:funny:

Yeah, I think Nolan should stick with the big budget original projects as long as WB keeps funding them.

I hear Nolan's up for consideration for the job of directing Mike Judge's upcoming live action King of the Hill feature film.

He did mystery thriller, then mystery thriller, then superhero films, then psychological sci-fi thriller, then pure science fiction, then war movie...I mean, what's next? I'd love to see his take on a straight up, original action film.

After debuting much higher on IMDb's Top 250 list, Dunkirk has plummeted to #61 and is falling fast. I wouldn't be surprised to see it out of the top 150 when the DVD is released. Other than the pre-cult Insomnia, this is a long overdue slap in the face for Nolan from his fans. Hopefully he will take it as a wake-up call and start making good movies again.

Dunkirk's now dropped into the 80's and still plunging.

This should close very close to $195m and might get a slight push during Awards season so it could still reach $200m but that is the MAX it will do now.

It's normal for hype to make people grade films higher around release. But Dunkirk didn't ever have that Inception or The Dark Knight level of popularity, so the buzz faded much faster, and viewers of it now are not as wow-ed by it. Makes total sense to me. But it still is in the IMDB Top 100, which Valerian is not, so I don't know what tree is trying to prove here.

Nolan is the height of fashion at the moment, space opera is currently highly uncool.

the film is getting a re-release in early December. May be enough to push it to 190m.

Wonderful. Hope it reaches $200m, but really the re-release is just for awards attention.

Yeah it won't do much in the re-release but it should get a few awards.

If I were WB right now I would be praying for Nolan to remain at the studio and also not to do anything stupid that would push Nolan away from WB. At this point, Nolan is one of the only consistently profitable directors at WB.

^ You make it sound like Nolan is solely working for WB which I would like to correct here. The rest of your point kinda applies for almost all studios IMO, they should try to keep their directors happy as well.

Come on, for the last 12 years Nolan has almost exclusively worked with WB on all his feature length films. Interstellar was an exception, but even then it ended up as a collaboration between Paramount and WB.

I think he has a pull with WB and back and forth but WB for their lives could not make Nolan make DCEU movies if they wanted to.

Huh? Who said anything about DCEU movies here? It's well known Nolan made it crystal clear that he was done with superhero/comic book films after The Dark Knight Rises.
