Close calls:

Deep In The Willow by Knocked Loose

-My favorite song of theirs to date but just heard it too late in the game and already have plenty of heavy rock in the top 50.

South Dakota by Chris Stapleton
Rich Men North Of Richmond by Oliver Antony

-Normally I like to have a token country song but there just wasn't enough room to let any in this year. Sorry ya'll.

Knives Out by Story of the Year

A huge benefactor of the still ongoing emo revival. Was so bizarre to see them playing the same venue as The Cure or Shania Twain lol.

Let's Go by Key Glock

-Good rapper with a cool name.

Lose You by Bully and Soccer Mommy

-Two of the best ladies in the alt rock game.

Ice Cream (Pay Phones) by Black Pumas

-Not a huge fan of soul music but these guys continue to impress.

Eyes Closed by Ed Sheeran

-Apologies to ginger nation.

Thank You New Jersey by Origami Angel
Milk Farm by Viagra Boys

-Some great band names.

Modern Day Ripoff by Iggy Pop

-Doing my 70s list earlier in the year made me remember how great Iggy and the Stooges were.

Gardener of Vengeance by Dethklok
Monochrome by Babymetal

-This was a hell of a tour.

Don't Let The Devil by Killer Mike and El-P

-It technically isn't Run the Jewels but it also totally is.

:D :D

Here is a full recap of last year. Looking at these is always amusing for me as it shows just how much the industry changes from year to year. 2022 was so heavily dominated by pop and pop-adjacent songs. 2023 is a bit different ... but you'll see. :P

1. Surrender My Heart - Carly Rae Jepsen
2. Weeds - Beach Bunny
3. All Comes Crashing - Metric
4. Walkin - Denzel Curry
5. Anti-Hero - Taylor Swift
6. Savior - Kendrick Lamar
7. Jealousy - Pale Waves
8. Triangle - The Hu
9. Wild - Spoon
10. Libre - Angele
11. Part of the Band - The 1975
12. In The Mirror - The Interrupters
13. Every Bottle Is My Boyfriend - CMAT
14. Atonement - Conquer Divide
15. Rotoscope - Spiritbox
16. Dare To Love Me - Avril Lavigne
17. Thun - Nas
18. Sweet - Static Dress
19. Pup The Band… - Pup
20. Here Ever After - Red Hot Chili Peppers
21. Little Bit of Love-Weezer
22. Beg For You - Charli XCX
23. Damn Excuses - Underoath
24. Coming Correct Is Cheaper - Soulglo
25. Lookout Kid - Arcade Fire
26. Pushin P - Gunna
27. Jiggalo - Mike Dimes
28. Loved You A Little - The Maine
29. Call Me Little Sunshine - Ghost
30. Why So Toxic - GFM
31. We Dont Talk About Bruno - Encanto
32. Love on the Run - Broken Bells
33. Firefly - Shygirl
34. Here To Forever - Death Cab For Cutie
35, GED - Lute
36. Wolf - Yeah Yeah yeahs

38. Cuff It - Beyonce
39. De tes yeux bleus perles - Celeste
40. Take My Breath - The Weeknd
41. Date Night - White Lung
42. Gorilla - Little Simz
43. Master The Hurricane - Visions of Atlantis
44. Want Want - Maggie Rogers
45. The Dying Song - Slipknot
46. Pyramiden - Syk
47. Chaise Longue - Wet Leg
48. Magic - Vince Staples
49. This Is Why - Paramore
50. Permanent Rebellion - LS Dunes

The new countdown will start today! I've found that my new method of just posting one when I have some free time throughout the day is easier than posting a bunch all at once. So there will be 5-10 entries per day (except Friday when I have to work all day and I doubt I'll post that many on Christmas or either of the Eves but, once again, we shall see) and I'll let you ya'll know when I'm tapping out for the day.

#50 coming up now!

But it's like this, I put you on the list, so come downtown if you're around

50. Shy Boy by Carly Rae Jepsen

-The woman who closed out 2022 is opening up 2023! Everyone and their mum knew that Carly would be releasing a side B to last year's #2 overall album, The Loneliest Time. Rather than stealth drop it out of nowhere with the title Loneliest Time Side B, Carly released a traditional single and changed the title to Loveliest Time. The two albums do sound quite different from one another so the title switch is more than acceptable. The songs are alot more toned down than the maximalism of her Jack Antonoff produced and inspired beats. That was jarring at first, but I've come around to appreciate it. It's just how electronic music is right now. Look at the fastest rising act Fred Again for proof of that. So hopefully Carly is pulling in some new fans, but even if not, it's nice to psychadelic switch things up every now and then.

I can wait for you at the bottom, I can stay away if you want me to

49. Just Pretend by Bad Omens

-This was one of my biggest misses of 2022. Their song Nowhere To Go was in my top ten most played of this year, but that was like one of the first singles released from the album and I couldn't put it on here. Thankfully this song, which wasn't even planned on being released as a single, randomly blew up on tiktok and the band responded by making a new video about halfway through this year. Bad Omens followed the new path of rock bands where their first album is very heavy, the second is still heavy but has a radio friendly hit or two and then the third is much more experimental. And well, experimenting around sometimes leads to unexpected results. Bad Omens used this late-blooming song to launch themselves up the festival cards and will probably be headlining these things before long.

Let's go to the beach! Little feet scamper across the sands of time taking four steps or more to each one of mine

48. Little Dogs by Mudhoney

-There's nothing metaphorical about this song. It's just the lead singer of Mudhoney talking about how much he loves his little dog. :hahaha: :hahaha: What is extra funny is that it just sounds like one of their normal acid-punk songs (very inspired by the Stooges whom I've already mentioned were a big part of my 2023.) I'm more of a cat person than a dog person, but I'd like to think that if ever I get a house/yard big enough for a doggo, I'd go with a german shepard. Something that is adorable to me and terrifying to my enemies. I could get down with some breeds of little dogs though. Corgis are hilarious and American Eskimos are just about the cutest thing ever.

Money over bitches is the motto, now the opps dead like Apollo vs Drago

47. Arsenal (I Smell Bitch) by Mike Dimes and Denzel Curry

-Two of my favorite rappers from this new generation (Z? Alpha?) Both placed very high on my list last year, but couldn't have been more different in the rap game. Mike Dimes is all about having a good time, fucking bitches and getting money. No problems there. I wanna do the same thing. Denzel pivoted to a more socially conscious rap last year though, resulting in a top 5 placement for both his album and song "Walkin." However, he was also good at being an over the top hype rapper before that pivot, and a song called "I Smell Bitch" still feels right at home for both of these guys. Also feels like a song you could go buck wild dancin at the club for, but is weirdly ignored by the mainstream. Too bad for them! I imagine Denzel will be a regular on the Flava'd Fifty from now on (this is his 3rd) and I very much hope Mike Dimes is as well!

Sunny day, but I can’t shake this feeling, never mind what others fucking say

46. Everything Is Fine! by Periphery

-You all might be shocked to learn that the title of this song is not 100% in earnest. As a matter of fact, if I had to gauge it just by the lyrics, I'd say everything was not fine! Their whole album was in a bit tongue in cheek with its titles. Not even I had heard of Djent (a subgenre of progressive metalcore which is itself a subgenre of... well nevermind) before, but apparently its such a thing that Periphery have to poke fun at the people who deny that it is a genre at all lol. What is not tongue in cheek is how hard this song goes. Excellent riffs, cleanish hook and a brutal breakdown. Also, they have a song called Zagreus on their album. Just saying.

My weed got diamonds in it I get high and delirious, black as Eddie Murphy but my joker's way to serious

45. Going Through Some Sh... by Juicy J

-Some of you may remember Juicy J from the rap group Three Six Mafia. Most of you will probably better remember him from his feature on the #1 hit Dark Horse with Katy Perry. Dude has been around for awhile now. This song (and whole mental trillness album) is pretty interesting. You often hear rappers talk about how great their lives are, or point out the problems with society, but very rarely do you hear them dig deep in and explore their own minds. It's pretty bold and brave honestly considering how admitting any sort of weakness in the rap will usually result in mass mockery. They ain't gonna let you forget the times you weren't feeling 100%. But hopefully songs like these will help up and coming rappers loosen some of the pressure for them to be Always Great, All The Time.

Shadows on the back seat taint the glass, drive-through memories hit me fast

44. Shiner In The Dark by Royal Blood

-Royal Blood have become regular guests around here. This is their fifth year charting a song, peaking at #3 in 2017 with Hook, Line and Sinker. Forgoing a traditional guitar in favor of just a bass and drums continues to give them a unique sound amongst the best current rock artists. And they continue to expand that sound as well, going away from heavier riffs in favor of funkier ones. And they are a ton of fun live. And this song is just all about fighting back and after getting knocked down (emotionally speaking perhaps?) Don't mind the bruises, just try not to take anymore.

Another room falls silent as he walks right through the door, you're patronising, undermining, I can't take anymore

43. Parasite by Grade 2

-English punk band Grade 2 make their first appearance on the Flava'd Fifty. And at only 1.1 thousand views, this sets the bar for least popular song on the entire countdown lol. But still, if you've liked any punk song ever then you will probably like these guys. Though its less raging against the machine and more raging against the every day. In this case, its that friend who just brings everyone down. They need to feel special about themselves and the only way to do it is by talking about being depressed all the time but then making sure that everyone knows their depression makes them better than you. People are weird.

I'm outstanding, international icon, fashion, this ain't snakeskin, it's python

42. Classy by Bia

-I'll fully admit that I only came across Bia because of how she (and one particular physical feature) looked on her album cover. My one friend insisted that was the only thing good about her. After all this time, I must disagree though. The ass came with some talent! She has a nice fast flow, confidence that doesn't cross into arrogance and works well with her beats, happily provided by Swiss Beatz himself here on Classy. The song clocks in at a mere one minute and fifty five seconds, but it uses all that time in the most effecient way possible.

41. Pretty In Possible by Caroline Polachek

-Caroline had a pretty big breakout year as this, her second solo abum, garnered rave reviews from all the major publications. I still prefer her band, Charlift, to her solo stuff but this one is a nice mix between her old (alternative) and new sounds (more electro). She is definitely a high quality song writer no matter what genre she is working in.

Am I dreamin? How you gonna prove to me that you're the real thing?

40. Knockoff by Poppy

-Just as Poppy lands her biggest gig ever as the opener on Avenged Sevenfold's upcoming arena tour, she pivotes away from rock and back towards her electropop works. And the title of the album explains it all - Zig. She zags when people expect her to zig and zigs when she is expected to zag. The A7X crowd is gonna be so confused lol. The good news is that she does both genres equally well! Knockoff is probably about boys pretending to be more than they are in order to impress her, but it could really work about alot of aspects of our society.

One day they sail you off for glory, the next day they peel you from the floor

39. I Think I Might Be Weird by Fucked Up

-Despite their very aggresive name, Fucked Up are probably one of the more mellow bands on here. Definitely more inspired by Bruce Springsteen and the resulting jersey punk movement than Leftover Crack, Cannibal Corpse or other artists with shocking names. They are also well read storytellers, I think this song is inspired by Moby Dick and other seaworthy classic novels. Or I guess it could be someone who was drafted into the navy and desperately looking for a way out. Also an inspiration - South Park. Not lyrically, but work-rate related as they claim to have both wrote and recorded this entire new album in a single day. What a crazy thing to do!

I don't have time for your drama, follow me around like piranhas

38. Take My Nirvana by Pvris

-That's pronounced paris in case you were wondering. The u is either a stylization or an upside down a. You pick. Anyways, while I really liked their first two albums (the third less so), it wasn't until seeing them live last year that Pvris truly clicked with me. Their mixing of different genres (alt, rock, pop, electro) all combines to make a wonderful sound that perfectly compliments vocalist Lynn Gunn. On album four, they are mostly examining how their lives have changed. Having an old friend/enemy try to bring you down and undercut your success is something every musician goes through, and everyone knows the best way of dealing with that is writing a song and having former Linkin Park member Mike Shinoda produce it for you.

Pretty sure she tours with a band (especially for the last couple albums) but does all the studio stuff herself.

Got a few more songs for you all here tonight.

I'll be here counting these stars without you

37. A Few Tomorrows by Meet Me At The Altar

-Much like with Avril's excellent Love Sucks last year, Meet Me At The Altar put out an entire album of pop-punk bangers yet for some reason it was one of the ballads that stuck out to play. This song plays kind of like a lullaby spoken to a lover right before a big tour is about to start (I'm sure its a total coincidence that they started their very first headlining tour this year.) It could apply to anything that takes you away from the ones you love though. Even a vacation ... though if you're going on a vacation without that special person maybe a different song would be more appropriate lol.

What would you trade the pain for? I'm not sure.

36. Love From The Other Side by Fall Out Boy

-Fall Out Boy's new album begins with both a song and an announcement. Maybe the old FOB is gone forever, but they are at least ready to put on their war paint once again (The Phoenix is the second song they played on the tour after this one.) Though the whole record also reminded me of Infinity on High (the third one with This Aint A Scene), like halfway between their origins and future. There was a lot of other good choices from Stardust, maybe even better ones, but I just think kicking the thing off with this was such an inspired choice that it needs to be highlighted.
