I strongly considered The Sound of Silence to go #1, but I figured I may be overthinking it compared to the song that's been my default answer for "favorite song" the last handful of years

I went with my default answer for "favourite song" for the last two decades, but I do prefer other songs more depending on my mood.

Top 5-2, is pretty solid, good songs. Familiar with "The Sound of Silence" and "The Promised Land", like them too, but wouldn't regard them as high. "Sam's Town" is more like just ok, my favorite of that bunch is "Intervention".

1. Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road

"There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet"

My favorite Bruce song, it is his greatest lyrical gem to me as a song about growing up, dreams and magic somewhere out in the night if you escape, and people who are ordinary but have a little bit of greatness if they commit to riding together. The opening piano intro is a great beginning to its story and somehow makes the line "You ain't a beauty, but you're alright" sound romantic, and then the song takes you on a ride ending with pulling off into the night with the sax ending. The Hammersmith live performance is also my favorite live performance of a song.

Just going to throw some other songs out there

I only recently discovered this so it's too new to put on my list, but what a beautiful song and vocal performance

Another song I didn't know until they played it regularly on the store I work at, cool storytelling song with a fun chorus to sing along to

I never got around to listening to Neil Young for real, but I should have put this one in my HMs

I went through a minor Sheryl Crow phase so I could have found a spot for her on my list, this one written by Bob Dylan was a fun song

Another song from a Game of Thrones I enjoy and listen to sometimes

I have enjoyed the accordian riff since the Departed

Good list, thanks for sharing. Thunder Road is a nice song, and sensibly on top considering the rest of your list.

It's hard not to enjoy just about everything on your list. All are nice selections.
