Post new songs. We are obviously with the ones so far.

(Oh yes, Joy, Smiths and Radiohead should be essential to any TOP 50)

Coal Miner's Daughter is not a song that appeals to me at all, but I can see it's the personal note that does it for you.

Memory Hotel is a good Rolling Stones song, but it's more just par for their music than one of their best songs I think.

Wuthering Heights is a pretty great tune.

This sure derailed my thread, lol. I use the "topic" videos when possible because they are automatically generated by YouTube and the record label, so the quality is guaranteed (no pitch alteration or editing to escape copyright claims, etc., and no low-quality uploads by Joe Q. Public from 2006). Plus, with certain songs, it is a way to find the studio version instead of a live video. PLUS, to be honest, I enjoy their minimalism and uniformity versus, for instance, cheesy, fan-made comic-sans lyric videos.

Precisely why I use them too.

7-5

"Coffee and TV" is a good song. Man, I've not heard it in YEARS so was happy to listen to almost the entire track.

"After the Gold Rush" is a lovely song. I know you introduced me to Young, but not sure if you introduced me to this song or whether I heard it on a TV or movie. It has a movie quality. Not sure. Anyway, awesome choice. Listened to every second.

"Memory Motel", eh, I listened to about a minute. Fuck off, Jagger!

4. "Madame George" by Van Morrison

Image

Northern Irish poet-shaman-showman Van Morrison is arguably popular music's premiere modernist songwriter, a creative cousin of James Joyce and T. S. Eliot. Of course, he is also blessed with an astonishing voice, a gospel-ready Celtic baritone able to expand and contract syllables and sounds for maximum emotional or even physical impact. Morrison's purest trip to a higher plane is his second album as a solo artist, Astral Weeks, and its best cut is "Madame George," an enigmatic and epic story set on Cyprus Avenue in Belfast. Its stream-of-consciousness lyrics, loosely constructed around the title character (whose exact nature, particularly in regard to gender, remains a point of contention), are cryptic and trance-inducing, as if the song's narrator (and by extension the listener) is slipping in and out of a dream or a memory, with past, present, and future conflating. The two moments when Morrison loses himself in the circular words, "And the love that loves to love, that loves the love that loves..." are among the most cathartic in rock music.

"Say goodbye to Madame George"

3. "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" by Spiritualized

Image

After the dissolution of his influential-yet-volatile acid-rock outfit Spacemen 3, Jason Pierce created Spiritualized, and the group has become a singular force in alternative music, incorporating elements of the blues, electronic music, gospel, jazz, and symphonic rock to forge an at times aggressive, at times heavenly sound. Their commercial and critical apex is Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, a life-changing monolith of a record. It opens with this title cut, which slowly, but steadily builds from a whisper to a cacophony by layering verse atop verse atop verse, resulting in a hypnotic harmony. The lyrics are earnest, unashamedly tender, and shot through with psychedelia: "so please put your sweet hand in mine," Pierce implores, "and float in space and drift in time." The original version interpolates elements of Elvis Presley's only-fools-rush-in ballad "Can't Help Falling in Love." The Presley estate at first disapproved and denied the rights, though later relented in time for a reissue.

"Getting strong today
A giant step each day"

"Madame George" by Van Morrison is brilliant. Might be my favourite song of yours so far. I think I might be a fan of Van Morrison. "Brown Eyed Girl" is a favourite of mine, and "Madame George" has now added to my appreciation. It's a shame they didn't release albums like they do these days with 10-12 tracks, because "Madame George" would be a fantastic end to an album. Not the same being the second track on side two of an LP.

"Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" by Spiritualized isn't bad. I thought I knew some Spiritualized songs, but looking up their studio albums I am now not so sure. My laptop with all my music is broken so I cannot check.

"Born Slippy (Nuxx)" is obviously a great track, and it's obvious why you put it in your list. It's the sort of track that there are now so many remixes and samplings of, but the original is still the best.

Never been a fan of the Arctic Monkeys and "A Certain Romance" hasn't changed that. Crap song. There is just no grace in vocals with the Arctic Monkeys.

Nice. "Gin Soaked Boy" is a tuuuune. It evokes a road trip-esque feeling from an American road movie or something. Everything's all good as they set away on the highway (at least that's how it begins). Love the closing lyrics. Honestly put a huge smile on my face. Very funny.

I am enjoying your HMs more than your actual Top 50.

Oh, maybe I spoke too soon. What the fuck is this "Liquid Swords" crap? Interesting start, then the standard gets lowered considerably.

"My Sad Captains" by Elbow. No.

The rest are meh.

C'mon, give us a legendary Top 2..

2. "Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)" by Laura Marling

Image

Laura Marling is my favorite musician, and she is the artist I have seen live the most times. I have excitedly followed her career since her Internet-heralded teenage debut a decade ago; I sensed at the time it was the chance to be on the ground floor of my generation's Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell, and the depth, elegance, and maturity of her subsequent material has borne this out. It is hard for me to pinpoint my favorite song of hers, but the one I perhaps return to most often is "Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)," a cut from her second album. Recorded when several members of Mumford & Sons were still in her band, with Marcus Mumford himself providing percussion and subtle vocal contributions, the song is an elegiac tune anchored by wintertime imagery and a gentle arrangement of strings and woodwinds. The lyrics chart an inner journey from bittersweet to empowered.

"And I'll never love England more than when covered in snow"

I know you're a huge fan of Marling, but I have never even heard a song of hers. "Goodbye England" is ok, I guess. Not sure it's so special. Just a bog-standard vocal that we get these days.

I thought the same band would be 1 and 2. Did you purposefully only do one song per artist?

I only recognize two of the top ten by name but I promise I'll go through the rest. :) And those two are very good!

1. "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis

Image

A rock anthem among rock anthems. A song I can listen to one hundred thousand times and never not find majestic and uplifting. The band I love more than any other. A ballad strongly and proudly reminiscent of late-, "Let It Be"-era Beatles, it is the first Oasis single sung by guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher rather than his brother Liam. Both are absolute legends as far as I am concerned, and Liam at full power is my favorite living vocalist, but Noel's softer tenor definitely suits this song best. And the lyrics exhibit his populist brilliance as a songwriter. No, they are not crowded with literary references and complicated rhyme schemes; instead they are soulful and plainspoken and openly referential (notably to John Lennon) and, above all, aimed at the heart and soul, all but demanding a tear shed and a lighter in the air. The result is a song the 250,000-plus people who saw Oasis at Knebworth in 1996 could sing along to, infuse with their own meaning, and feel, together, vividly. Hearing it live in person at a Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds show is certainly one of my personal favorite live-music memories.

"So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late
As we're walking on by"

"Everybody Knows," "Sisters of Mercy," and "Take This Waltz" made my initial, sprawling, stream-of-consciousness list, which was then severely cut down to achieve a list of only 50 songs.

Also, I did impose a one-song-per-artist rule, only bending it slightly by allowing a Beatles song and a George Harrison song.
