Re: The Flava'd Fifty: Greatest Songs
I see Muse's themes as more broadly (or, less charitably, generically) Orwellian. Bellamy is just a dystopia/sci-fi nerd.
"Uprising" is all right, if a bit overplayed on the radio, but it is from the album where they began going downhill, I feel. Origin of Symmetry is their best.

Origin of Symmetry is my favourite too, but Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations are also great.

The Kyrie trade has my brain fizzled, but the show must go in and the Tremendous Thirties will soon be concluded.

31. "Wonderwall" by Oasis
I know it probably seems pretty square to pick Wonderwall as my favorite Oasis song. They have such a strong discography after all, and I flirted with "Live Forever" , "Don't Look Back In Anger" (you my boy Noel!) and even the bside track "Acquiescence" . Yet none of them ever felt right, because Wonderwall is the one and it always has been. Its just a love song that starts with the acoustic guitar all alone, but expands to include the full band and even a freakin cello. Its easy to get lost in it and singing along is irresistible (one of my biggest criteria!)

"So long live the car crash hearts"
30. "Thriller" by Fall Out Boy
No this is not a cover. Yes, though it may be a contoversial opinion, this is the best song with that title. Its a roaring opening number for one of all time favorite albums. Fall Out Boy were part of holy emo trinity in high school, alongside My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday. I still enjoy those bands, but none of their songs or albums would be considered for my all time lists. Yet Infinity On High stands strong, why? I think its just enough of a mix between their emo days and a modern alternative sound. And on Thriller, with only one song and an assist from Jay-Z, morph into the band they could have been (for longer than 14 songs.) Calling it Thriller itself is a bold move, the word is never uttered in the song and Fall Out Boy usually use song titles like "I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I Get You Off". Thriller was Mike's way of stepping away from his origins and becoming the King of Pop, Fall Out Boy accomplished the same and also stepped away from their competitors to become Kings of Pop-Punk. And they called their shot, Jim Thome style.

I don't mind Fall Out Boy. My favorite by them is either "What a Catch, Donnie" or "Thanks for the Memories" (just imagine I removed the vowels).

I started my Top 50. Hope you don't mind, Flava. I just cannot wait 2-3 weeks. I'll probably finish mine before you even start your Top Ten.
And I think the forum can cope with two lists running simultaneously.

I'm going through your list and listening to any I am unfamiliar with. This was my first one. No idea why you love it so much. It's such a generic Avril Lavigne-ish type of formulaic-structured light rock song.

Hey, that's a damn good song.
I don't get your taste. You like some good stuff but then you'll upset it all with a Taylor Swift or Kelly Clarkson song. I dread to think what's in the rest of the list. Maybe full of Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry songs.

The Naked and Famous are a band where I enjoy the songs of theirs I hear on the radio or on TV/in commercials, but they blend together with lots of other groups in my mind, such as Atlas Genius, Fitz and the Tantrums, Grouplove, Young the Giant...

"London is drowning and I live by the river"
29. "London Calling" by The Clash
This is a song I didn't always get. Not to say I didn't like The Clash, "Brand New Caddilac" and "White Riot" were my shit and my WinAmp library had their entire discography. But why was this song so reverred as this ultimate punk rock song when it barely even sounded punk. Musically there was a lot of bopping but very little blitzkreiging. Yet the switch flipped sometime over the past few years. Maybe being punk doesn't require everyone to be Seth Rollins and BURN IT DOWN. The Clash recognize that It is already burning and are content to just sit and watch. They can ignore the call, but they know the river will eventually catch up to them. I've gained a big appreciation for these lyrics, and when you combine that with the undeniably catchy beat and booming hook, you get a very high placement on this list. And one that I always get excited to hear, even for the millioneth and one time.

"With the lights out it's less dangerous"
28. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana
I guess its token classics hour at the Apollo this morning/afternoon. Yet this is another one that I wasn't totally down with it. Nirvana was just that old band who were still taking up all the air time on my favorite station, 92.3 Xtreme Radio (RIP since this is a sports talk channel now.) Despite me complaining about teachers making students overanalyze every piece of art ever created, doing a lyric by lyric interpretation of this song actually helped. This is probably because the lyrics are pretty hard to make out on their own. And it still wasn't till a few years later that I really became a Nirvanite, but this was the catalyst and I thank my English teacher (whose name I cannot recall) for it. Props to Dave Grohl for becoming the first artist to have two songs in the top 50. His drum riff at the beginning is in my opinion the most iconic of all time (though the current People's Champion is probably "In The Air Tonight" ... thanks to Mike Tyson.)

It's kinda true, and I don't really like any of the other bands you mentioned. It's like the old iPod commercials spawned an entire genre. Naked and Famous just have a few really good somgs that work for me.
