Post The Monkees
When I was a young kid, I was very much influenced by the Monkees. While other kids wanted to be astronauts or firefighters, I wanted to be in a rock and roll band where we all live in the same house and have wacky adventures (isn't that how it worked?).

Funnily enough, when in college, I actually was in a band for a while where we all lived in the same house and practiced in the basement.

Anyway, although I obviously got into a lot of other music over the years (such as discovering the Beatles when I was 11 or so and saying "Hey, these guys are better than the Monkees!") there was still a kind of love for the old music. They had some great songs (and also some cringe-worthy ones, too.)

So last year I paired up with Mark Arnold, an author who has written many books on popular culture, and we just finished a new book on the music of the Monkees, which should be out by the end of the year or early next year.

If you are at all interested, here's the link to our web page: https://monkees.wordpress.com/

I do, but not often because I'm old and I don't listen to a lot of the music you guys listen to, so I don't usually have anything to say

I enjoy the Monkees. I feel a lot of music fans have a moment when they realize they were (are) an eccentric, gifted, interesting band, one deeper than their television-and-merchandising origin suggests. "Daydream Believer" and "Porpoise Song" are perfect pop songs and my favorites by them. Their recent album, with songwriting contributions by, among others, Noel Gallagher, Rivers Cuomo, and XTC's Andy Partridge, is good and proves them a still-vital group.

Yeah, I'm still at this stage having mostly just heard the show's opening theme, and never once delved into their discography.

If you go to our web page, there are links to lots of their songs via YouTube. Some of the songs suck mightily, but some are excellent pop tunes.

I can recommend some if you wish.

Is "Long Title" really part of the title? Is it a series?

It's an inside joke.

There's a Monkees song called "Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?" written by Peter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzMWdDBaqHk

Also, "Looking for the Good Times" is the name of a Monkees song, and their last album was called simply "Good Times".

Monkees fans should get all this, and let's face it, I don't think we're going to sell too many books to people who aren't already Monkees fans.

Yeah, I love it. It's by Scott Shaw, Emmy-award winning cartoonist and comic book artist, who also designed the last two Monkees album covers.
