Damn. is a solid album , I gave it a B+ and defended it when my friend, who is a much bigger fan, said it was trash. Yet it currently stands with a 99 on metacritic.

99

Music is the most subjective of all entertainment forms. Everybody has their own unique taste. So when I see a 99 its less the mark of a masterpiece and more the mark of people being afraid of their criticism being criticized. Beyonce basically gets the same treatment.

My main issue with this is that I believe it will actually end up driving people away from these two. If you listen to something expecting a 99 its gonna be a different than just listening to enjoy yourself. And if someone gets burned enough times they'll just dismiss the artist all together. Look at James Blake, nobody cares anymore. Rightfully so imo, but that guy was the hottest thing on the net three years ago.

Kendrick deserves better than that.

I was never the biggest Kendrick fan, but yea, it feels like a pretty average effort ambition wise, it seems like a Kendrick album for people who listen to Drake

I don't really care that much about music criticism, but I care more about TV critics and the whiff of BS and writing what's cool to say has been there for a while. Overall I suspect clickbait isn't any better for art criticism than it is journalism, there's a huge difference between these writers jobs and lives than a newspaper film critic who's readership is guaranteed and job is stable

If you don't like Beyoncé you're racist.

I liked Beyoncé before Super Bowl 50.

Oh, I can't imagine what changed your mind on her music that you used to like!

I still like her old songs like Crazy in Love, Irreplaceable, If I Were a Boy, Halo, Drunk in Love, Single Ladies, Run the World (Girls), etc. There were like no good songs on Lemonade.

Lemonade was after Super Bowl 50.

I wasn't a fan of the shows' Black panther anti-police theme.

Why does every hip hop/R&B/rap album get like a 95 on MC and pop albums never get higher than like 75?

Unless they're Beyonce, which might answer your question

Black people are known to get the benefit of the doubt. This is a good post.

Beyoncé isn’t pop anymore. She’s full on hip hop R&B now.
