Post subject:  New music / What do you think?

Shall we have a thread where we comment on the latest new music? There's really not much interest in Music section left so it makes no sense to open new threads whenever a big name releases new music (or announces a new album) or when people stumble on something new and cool just for a couple of replies before that thread eventually goes into oblivion.

So let's start with a new Jamiroquai!

I think it's an OK song. I'm really not fond of those weird key changes throughout and I don't think the three obviously different music parts gel together all that well. Verses are very much Daft Punk circa Tron Soundtrack, chorus is pretty much classic Jamiroquai (and by far the catchiest part) while middle-8 weirdly mixes Kraftwerkian sounds and funk. Obviously they're not afraid of experimenting with all these things in just one song and it's an admirable try IMHO. And I'm glad they're using the word automaton. Very SF books choice of a word.

And can we all agree how that headpiece in the video is fucking awesome?

Not bad.

It is a solid song (and video). On first listen, its retro-futuristic sonic aesthetic catches me more than the actual skeleton of the song, but I enjoyed it.

I'll contribute this gorgeous, simple new song by one of my favorite solo artists:

I've only ever heard his rework of 1989 and I thought it was a true testament at how good the source material actually is. I might even prefer his production than the shiny electro-pop of Taylor's original. But I've never heard any of his actual stuff before.

This is a nice song, but for some reason I always thought he was a rock/pop artist, not a country one.

He is primarily known as "alternative country," I would say, à la Wilco. But it depends on the album; they range from heavy to acoustic and subtle, with a few total left-field experiments as well (an EP of hardcore punk, for example). A wanderer in the Neil Young or Beck vein.

So Depeche Mode are back. It's the usual DM sound, but I'm not really into this song. Maybe because it feels like jumping on the (current political) train too much as they usually stay away from songs like that.

It is definitely not their best (the lyrics are a bit crap), but the brooding synthesizer sound coupled with Martin Gore's striking voice still has a certain magnetism.

Mastodon are one of the heaviest bands I am into (maybe because they remind me of Josh Homme or a certain vein of Led Zeppelin's discography). Their new album seems promising. A single from it:

By Martin Gore, I meant Dave Gahan. ;)

I've never listened to Mastodon, but is that song characteristic for them? It's actually a pop song in a disguise.

It not 100-percent characteristic. It is maybe the closest they have come to recording a Foo Fighters-type song. Much of their music is heavier and more abstract.

I actually like the song and that's why I asked if it's characteristic for them. Maybe I'll check them out.

This is good, but its weird hearing it from the same guys who made "March of the Fire Ants". Hoepfully the album is good though. The last one was pretty meh, but The Hunter was great.

Love the new Dirty Projectors song:

I saw them live in 2013 when they opened for the National. I was barely familiar with them at the time, but was impressed and listened to their records.

The Ty Segall songs are both very good. Are you a fan of Mac DeMarco, Flava'd?

I liked two previous DP songs they've released. This one is good too. Though I've never fully grasped what kind of a project DP is/are. He is now solo, but they've been a band with rotating members, almost like some kind of a collective.

And I prefer the second Ty song Flava'd posted.

And sorry Cowboy, but that's a bit of an overkill for me.

Depeche Mode's "Where's the Revolution" is a cool track. I like it.

The Mastodon song, "Show Yourself", is crap. I can see why the Josh Homme connection makes sense, but I feel this song doesn't have the quality of a QOTSA track. That Overkill track is even worse.

Quite tame for a group called Dirty Projectors. Annoying track, really.

I cannot stop listening to 65daysofstatic's We Were Exploding Anyway. David introduced them to me via "Crash Tactics".

Such a brilliant album. I hope others can find enjoyment from them too.
