I saw four concerts this month, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Taylor Swift and an A+ all-timer from Foo Fighters. So I mostly wanted to listen to those artists instead of searching for new music as I normally would. Though perhaps more importantly, nothing freakin came out. Ty Segall was the only new release I was interested in, everything else is spillover from a packed June and the two artists David recommended. July was Drake month and I just don't care.  Dr. Dog, one of my favorite artists, once again slipped a new release by me, it came out all the way back in April. Unlike last years Abandoned Mansion, this one actually lives up to the D Dog name though. Check out "Go Out Fighting" , "Listening In" or "Heart Killer" if you are unconvinced. The world may be waiting for the new My Morning Jacket album, but Jim James continues to put out great solo stuff in the meantime. "Hunger" is obviously a fantastic song, but Florence built a good album around it as well. Their best since Ceremonials. And just like last year, but using a different genre, Gorillaz earn a respectable B+. So all of the big stuff lived up to my expectations. Ty Segall is the only one that disappointed a little, but only because a B+ is less than the A+ he earned earlier in the year. The team up with White Fence was my least favorite of his 2011 trilogy too, but like Joy that was still pretty good. Thanks to David for the new artists. Coming up in August we have Death Cab For Cutie's first album without guitarist Chris Walla. Also looking forward to YG, Ariana Grande, White Denim and Justice if Woman Worldwide isn't just a live album. |

Weezer/Pixies/Sleigh Bells was a terrific show. (I believe it was the Wombats in the opening slot at other points in the tour.) Glad you enjoyed the Nude Party and Bodega.  Maybe try Supergiant by Valley Queen.

Kamikaze by Eminem - A- August started off pretty rough, with a disappointing album by YG and some new artists that did not live up to their lead singles. Ariana saved the month though, and it just kept going for there. No Walla, No Problem for Death Cab as the new album is just as good as the last (though still far from their peak). The Beths add on to a great year for female fronted garage rock. I don't normally like ska music, and nothing on the album is near as good as potential FF4 #1 "She's Kerosene", but it's a very solid album with a very fun guest spot by Rancid. White Denim album was fine, but I guess I'm just not that into the older Black Keys-style anymore. I feel like this would at least be a B+ a few years ago. Mitski was a very interesting piece of work. Half the album is Florence-style stadium-pop anthems and the other half is highly personal singer-songwriter indie songs. I obviously prefer the former but it is always nice to have diversity. Eminem absolutely slays on the new album. I had been slowly coming around on the mumble rap craze, mostly thanks to Cardi B, but this album has sent all that respek down the chute. Like seriously, write a real fucking song instead of whispering nonsense Lil Yachty. It is not perfect, the song where he breaks up with D12 is weird as well as the two with Jessie Reyez. But most of the songs are great and there is so much humor including maybe the best Paul skit. Angry Eminem with a chip on his shoulder will never get old. The September calendar is nuts. Metric, Beartooth and Against The Current all release new albums at the end of the month, within a week of each other. So expect lots of As next update! |

Past Lives by Against The Current - A 96 Disease by Beartooth - B+ Well Kanye delayed his album and maybe it is for the best. Tough year for my guy. September 2018 definitely delivered the gooods even without him though. Four A's, one from a new artist and one an instant classic. Let us start with Metric. It was difficult to not create a new thread just for Art of Doubt, but I figured the forum is already flooded with things that only I care about. Obviously already one of my favorite bands and have delivered one of my all time favorite albums in 2009 with Fantasies. The last album was not that great, though it did have a few strong songs on there. This is whole different level for them though, precision on every aspect of the music and sharp melancholy on the lyrics (though they're still uplifting somehow). I'll post some tracks somewhere, eventually, but the standout about a very standout album is "Now Or Never Now" which gives me "All My Friends" by LCD Soundsytem vibes and hits me in the feels hard. "Underline The Black" , "Risk" , "Die Happy" would round out my top 5, but the bottom half would be 90% of other artist's best song ever. The big September 28th releases were both good, but a little disappointing. Obviously it is hard to be disappointed in an A, which is what Past Lives is, but I can't help but feel a little sad that the album stayed so sonically monotonous. Some people might praise the consistency in the song, unlike their past album and EPs whiched bounced around genres. For me I just feel like the diversity was more valuable than doing Emotion Part 3. That being said, standing alonside two of the best pop albums of the decade isn't all that bad. "Voices" , "I Like The Way" , "Come Alive" , "The Fuss" and the singles already released are all bangers with those huge hooks that only Chrissy can do so well. I'd best compare it to the Royal Blood album, where you wish they did a little more to earn the +, but it's still full of terrific songs. As for Beartooth, that album is full of good songs, but I'm just disappointed that they went from Lost Aggressive Youth back to A Bear To Remember. "Bad Listener" is the highlight, it has so much energy and I cannot wait that hear that song live. "Greatness or Death" and "Clever" are also worth checking out. Whatever happened to Cowboyfromhell btw? I'd like to read his opinion of it. Carrie Underwood's album is pretty corny, but I prefer it to her usual country sapiness. I don't think she mentions horses or counties once! I've seen it called an R&B album at heart and that fits, Carrie is really sad. I recall her posting a bunch of supportive stuff for her husband during the Stanley Cup the Predators were in, but I guess that was a long time away. Cause she is definitely feeling "Low". Which is also one of the best songs on her alongside the sultry "Backslide" , adorable "Love Wins" and title track you'd think was from a Kelly Clarkson album. All the new artists are worth checking out, most from the alt-pop genre. The Dirty Nil are more traditional rock, Letters From The Fire is like a less-trashy Pretty Reckless and even though I didn't love the Joyce Manor album it is only 22 minutes song and has two good songs in there. |
