Arcade Fire add anotherstellar album to their mighty discography. Reflektor started as an A- before moving up to an A , so I'm hoping these songs prove to be just as strong growers.

Weather Diaries takes the award for Best Thing David Has Recommended To Me so thanks for that. :-) I had not heard any of their previous stuff and have never been a fan of dreampop bands like MBV. This is more like dream punk though. A mix of The War on Drugs and Brand New.

Also a shout out to Cage The Elephant's excellent live album Unpeeled. They too have accumulated quite the discography and this is a great showcase of it.

I am heavily listening to and loving Live for the Moment by the Sherlocks at the moment. Very excited for the new records by Queens of the Stone Age, the National, and, of course, Liam Gallagher.

I'm at 77 or 78 now, but I've decided to temporarily suspend this thread and do a Best of 2017 Flava'd Fifty in December instead.

That was the old KJ Music Forum. Now our audiences demand more. Fast 9 can't just go back to street racing.

I like Reputation more than 1989 so far. Shame on me for doubting the TayLord.

I don't like it more than 1989 (yet) but it's a very solid pop record. Very cohesive.

I have been listening to Random Access Memory and Discovery a lot over the last couple of months. When I get my laptop fixed, I will have access to my library of music, so at the moment just using YouTube.

Post Re: How many albums have you heard in 2017?
Eminem took us out on a rather sour note, but still a heck of a year. Sheer Mag coming in at the end and obliterating all competition was only approproate though. A great year needs an A+ album to top it off, much like Vampire Weekend in 2013.

Apple music has obviously greatly inflated my count. However, looking at the schedule for next year, I doubt I will be able to hit 100 again. There are only four artists I like releasing in the first three months; Ty Segall, Marmozets, Brian Fallon and Franz Ferdinand. There is hope though, a band on their debut album has topped the charts two years in a row. Who will be the next top star (for me)?

I’ll keep this somewhat active during 2018. Maybe every eight albums per update instead of four though.

Jan 2018 Update:

1. Songs Of Praise by Shame* - B
2. M A N i A by Fall Out Boy - C
3. Knowing What You Know Now by Marmozets - B+
4. Freedom’s Goblin by Ty Segall - A+
5. Con Todo El Mundo by Khruangbin* - B

Adding stars for the first time listening to the artist. Ty’s new album blew my mind and may get its own thread in the near future. The two new artists were fine, though not exceptional. And FOBs album could have been worse. I like “Last Of The Real Ones” alot.

Also need to mention the Alex Lahey album Love You Like A Brother, which came out in late 2017. It is great and I'd give it an A-!

I hate to do Justin so dirty, but come on man. The grade lowers every time I have to hear one of the singles anywhere.

Story Untold is some solid pop punk and Soft Moon is Nine Inch Nails adjace. MGMT might get a bump but I'm currently meh on too many songs. A lot to like on that album though. Franz deliver like they always do, even with a new and flashier sound. But since they've always been pretty flashy, it is not too big of an adjustment. Brian Fallon also has a great follow up to his also great solo debut. I no longer feel like it's crazy to say I like him better without the rest of the band. No offense to Gaslight of course. Superchunk is one of my pals favorite bands, but even though I hear why, it is hard for me to get too into. Certainly worth a listen though if you like jersey-style punk. The opening track is really cool! SOB X RBE were the surprise breakouts from the BP soundtrack and luckily their album delivers on that promise. "Anti-Social" and "Carpoolin" are excellent. And Vance Joy album started off really well, but by the end everything felt very samey. Still, a strong effort and one of the big surprises of the year thus far.

A pretty solid month from front to back. I really liked the first Screaming Females I heard a few years ago, the second not so much, but this is definitely their best. "Black Moon" and "I'll Make You Sorry" are standout tracks. Kacey ended the month on a really high note, also delivering her best by far. There's a ton of great stuff on there, so not quite sure what my favorite is right now. "Slow Burn" , "Lonely Weekend" , "Space Cowboy" and "High Horse" are all worth checking out for the curious. Jack White delivers his usual greatness, but in a much more experimental way. I'd say the closest comparison is Vince Staple's "Big Fish Theory". The Decemberists album was a bit of a let down, but it is fine. I listened to Camila's album only because I thought she was opening for Taylor (she isn't in Cleveland, Charli is, which is still way better) , but I'm glad I did since it is pretty dope. Moon Taxi do that song "Put em up ... two high" that you've heard in a million Hulu commercials. They have some other good stuff on there though, especially the opener "Let The Record Play". Bat Fangs are basically just garage indie rock, but I like that stuff, so it was a good way to spend 25 minutes.

Never heard of Kacey but Awardswatch posters were hyping up Golden Hour so I checked out. It's ok. I prefer Jenny Lewis

May was a pretty good month. I had a big new release every week, a great new find in Belly and Courtney closed it with one of the strongest releases this year. Overall maybe even better than the first? And certainly better than the one I'll blame Kurt Vile for. "Crippling Self Doubt and a General Lack of Self Confidence" and "Need A Little More Time" were my favorites on first listen. Chvrches' album is below their normal excellence, but it is still good enough to warrant the A. "Graffiti" , "Deliverance" , "Graves" , "Heaven Hell" are all top quality and the singles are solid too. Arctic Monkeys disappointed a little with their new style, but I was also disappointed in their last one and eventually came around. Though that one at least had some instant greats like "DIWK?" , "R U Mine" and "Snap Out of It". None of the songs are bad, but none are even sniffing the level of those 3.

It’s Ye month! Along with Pusha T at the end of May, Kanye and the friends he has left put out five new albums in 5 consecutive weeks. Pusha, however, ended up being the best of them all. Ye is the first Kanye album I have given less than an A- too (including Throne). However, I would not consider it a blemish on his otherwise perfect record. Kids See Ghosts definitely is a blemish though. We can blame Kid Cudi all we want, but Ye produced it and featured on every track. It’s a flop. Teyena and Nas were both solid, and I probably wouldn’t have listened to their albums otherwise. So that is a win I suppose.

It was actually a few releases I missed plus one surprise one that ended up ruling over a verrry hot month of music. Kanye’s Throne partner, supporting his now-rapping wife, delivers the best hip-hop of the year. It is Jay’s best work since Throne and maybe my favorite Bey album ever. I liked her self-titled best before this, but that is a B+/A- at best. Everything Is Love is just great. Also rising above her previous work is Natalie Prass. Her first album showed a lot of promise, but was missing something, an oomph to make her songs memorable. The new one has no such problems, as standout tracks “Oh My” , “Short Court Style” and “Nothing To Say” prove. You can picture her in a jazz lounge with a funk rock band behind her. Speaking of an artist that just needed a little bit of production- let’s give it up to Parquet Courts! They always had the raw talent, but it took Dangermouse to truly bring it out and create a masterpiece. It really reminds me of the Cage the Elephant album that Dan Auerbach produced a few years ago, which is just happens to be one of my favorites of the decade. Dan usurped his producing mentor there, but Dangermouse has retaken the lead in this friendly rivalry. Dan’s own latest efforts, Sonny Smith and Shannon + Clams were fine, but a far cry from Wide Awake.

June also had an impressive debut in Snail Mail. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have a fun band name and a great single in “Talking Straight”. Listen if you like War on Drugs. Sophie’s album is kinda nuts electro-point and might be better than I’m giving it credit for. Nine Inch Nails new album is fine but I’m concerned about the lyric “Time is running out, I don’t know what I’m waiting for.” Hang in there buddy. Lily Allen’s new album is also fine.
