Post Grammy predictions
I believe we are past the deadline. The smart money is on a lot of wins by Adele and Beyonce. Can Kanye sneak in? Or a rock album like the excellent Cage The Elephant and Dinosaur Jr albums? Probably not.

My predictions:

Album:
Adele
Beyonce
Drake
Carrie Underwood or something country
David Bowie

Record:
One Dance
Formation
Hello
SOrry
Stressed out

In regard to left-field rock candidates for the top album category, maybe Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. There is the Radiohead album, too.

Isn't Nick Cave too late for this year's party?

Pretty much. And Song of the Year is for lyrics.

Nick Cave did make it out in time. Hard to see them nominating something that obscure though, even if it does have a powerful story behind it.

Yes, the more confusing distinction is there being both a record of the year and song of the year category. Song of the year is supposed to be for the composition only, while record of the year is supposed to reward the recording process such as performance and production, but it mostly just feels like they have 2 best song categories

Nominations come out Monday. I'll replace Drake with Foo Fighters, but otherwise I like my noms.

Pretty close lol. Shack is right though, almost nothing interesting happened. Kanye and rock get totally shut out again.

After snubbing Springsteen's Wrecking Ball for 2012, I was hoping they'd nominate Radiohead this year for Album, their best album since In Rainbows (I know they only released one since, but King of Limbs especially disappointed).

So Beyonce went away with just Best Urban Contemporary Album. Ouch. Adele pipped her to the post of all the big awards that mean something. :funny:

Fuck Beyoncé. She should get over herself. Lemonade had ZERO crossover appeal outside of her fan base.

Grammy should not be a popularity contest. It should celebrate the best music of the year. That being said, most of the best music of last year went unnoticed even in the nominations.

Bowie would probably end up with 0 Grammy awards if he didn't die, despite Blackstar being better than ANY AOTY nominee.

Crossover appeal means little in terms of quality.

How can unappealing music be good? If it was good, wouldn't it be appealing?

Get over herself? Did she throw a tantrum that I missed?

Just look at the reviews, homeboy. Lemonade CRUSHED 25 in that aspect. Not even a contest. Obviously 25 sold more, as it's one of the biggest albums of all time, but that doesn't mean it's better.

Sing earned more than Moana. So it's better than it because obviously it has more general appeal, right? And why is La La Land getting so much recognition when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Is obviously more appealing to mainstream audience and thus a better movie?

It's one thing to be popular and have crossover appeal (which doesn't equate to quality at all) and the other to actually be good. Those two don't necessarily correlate.

Music and movies aren't comparable. It's not like Beyoncé is some indie artist trying to break into the business. When you make music for a niche audience, you can't expect everyone to vote for it for Album of the year.

I for one thought Lemonade was fine but not nearly as good as 25. Mainly due to my taste in genre. Why should people vote for a genre they don't appreciate just because others like it?

The way things get popular in both of those business have a lot of similarity, so yes, they're comparable IMHO. Anyway you went after a popular vote. Why would that apply as an argument to one entertainment industry but not the other?

Awards should act as antithesis to popular success in order to celebrate quality over quantity of hits. Otherwise what's the point if you're just going to award the most successful thing anyway????

Music is much more subjective. And it's a lot more accessible as it's basically free to listen to. Most people are able to appreciate a lot of different kinds of movies. But most people only like a few genres of music.

Lots of people saw Rogue One because they like Star Wars, but hardly any would argue it was the best of the year. People have to actually like music for it to become popular.

Music also has two aspects, the melody and the lyrics, and can be good based off either one. Whereas films really need to have meaningful scripts and can't be saved by technical wizardry. Despite being mostly love songs, the songs on 25 are infinitely more catchy than those on Lemonade, even if the black empowerment anti police messages in Lemonade's lyrics are more controversial. I think I've heard Formation at least 5 times (not once on the radio) and I can't even remember the tune.

Obviously Lemonade's genre doesn't appeal as much to Grammy voters. But is there evidence that the percentage of Grammy voters that are fans of the genre is less than the percentage of overall fans of the genre?

The grammys already only award pop music. Adele and Beyonce had the two most popular albums last year so your argument here is kinda silly.
