I think you're taking the "song of the summer" title too literally. A song doesn't have to be released in the summer to claim that designation. Look no further than last summer when "Fancy" and "Rude" dominated. "Fancy" was released in February 2014 and "Rude" was released in October 2013.

Cheerleader has already hit #1 in the UK and AUS, and is sitting at #2 in CAN. A song that makes that kind of impact in those markets usually has similar success in the US, where it's currently ascending iTunes, Spotify and mainstream radio in perfect alignment. Quality of the song aside, this will almost surely have a lengthy run at #1 after Bad Blood.

Perhaps I am. I thought it was supposed to be a song that dominates during the summer months. Both Rude and Cheerleader were released here during our summer also. That said - apart from threads like this on KJ, I rarely associate a song's success with a season.

This Lean On song is pretty catchy.

We may have another contender. "Good For You" Ft A$AP Rocky by Selena Gomez. Its currently #1 on iTunes and rapidly gaining airplay. It doesnt have the feel as a summer song.

No there was, our minds are just conditioned to think in terms of box office seasons. "See You Again" takes this easily. It's still hard to believe how much staying power it had, long after Furious left the spotlight.

I don't follow music at all. No radios in China. No TVs either.

There isn't a primary 'song of the summer' but there are compelling choices... with stickier staying power than last year's songs.

First, the two that have been mentioned in this thread: Can't Feel My Face and Cheerleader.

Second, you have a trifecta of EDM/ trap singles - by Diplo and/ or DJ Snake - that collectively define the summer: Lean On, Where Are U Now, and You Know You Like It. Lean On is a candidate itself for SOTS. Where Are U Now has done wonders for Bieber's brand. You Know You Like It is just reinforcement of the sound.

Anyway, that's my take. It's Diplo's summer.

(Also - Lean On is #1 on Spotify Global and averages 2.4m plays... to Cheerleader's 1.9m plays. Cheerleader has a small advantage in total plays... 333m to 316m...)

I guess it does come down to personal taste then. The song I've been listening the most the past few months/ weeks is Fight Song.

No, "song of the summer" doesn't come down to personal taste. If we're even throwing that around as a point, then it means there is no "song of the summer".
