Thanks! I'll try to do you proud. Though I wanna see you update just as often as me this year. 100+ albums Shack. It'll be easy!

Green Day releases either this week or next so that'll be #1 for both of us.

I'll try listening to the Spotify new music Friday thing to get to 10 this year... or maybe choose one every month? January's could be Green Day's.

Hey I found an album!

Lizzie No - Halfsies: 7/10. Solid folk/country type of album. I think Lagunita is the standout while Halfsies and Getaway Car are also good, some of the ballads are less memorable. Get her on a late night show!

Nice! I can't get into the folk/pop/country (unless its certain someone doing it) but it has certainly blown up and is quickly becoming the sound of whatever the new generation of music fans is called. Noah Kahan , Tyler Childress, Zach Bryan, etc... are all headlining major festivals above much more established artists.

For me:

1) Saviors by Green Day - 7.7

-Aside from the unfortunately terrible Father Of All Motherfuckers album, Green Day have been pretty consistently in this range for me post-American Idiot. Lots of good songs like The American Dream Is Killing Me, One Eyed Bastard and Corvette Summer, a few that I instantly forgot about, but nothing too bad.

I tried the Green Day album but it seemed like songs they could in their sleep. They feel like they burned out after American Idiot though I guess 21st Century Breakdown had decent enough hits Know Thy Enemy and 21 Guns. I feel like they should have had a few more catchy mid 2010s songs like the Chili Peppers Dark Necessities.

Kevin Gates - The Ceremony: Seems like a talented rapper in terms of his voice/flow, though the content is pretty generic with the highlight being the comedy horny songs like Eater or saying if he takes his shirt off at the Beyonce concert she might forget the verse. Ceremony and Protect Children are decent for more serious ones. 6/10

Album of the month

January 2024 - Lizzie No: Halfsies (9/10)

2. Letter To Self by Sprints* - 6.1

-Pretty good debut album from these Irish rockers (it's like haunting alternative-noise-punk type.) I'll admit that I did get feelings of deja vu throughout the album as if my future self had already listened to it and sent the memory back in time. In reality it just sounds like a lot of other artists I like (Pixies, Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag, Dead Kennedys are influences, The Kills, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Plague Vendor more recent, and there's another that I just can't place.) The good news is that sounding like bands I like is better than sounding like bands I don't like.

3. Sol Maria by Eladio Carrion* - 5.4

-This is a Spanish rapper who has a song called RKO on the album. I thought "hey it worked once, maybe it will again?" Ehhh not so much. It isn't terrible, I finished the whole album after all. The same trap beats over and over just make me lose interest though. The other spanish rapper / wrestler does a much better job of keeping things fresh from song to song.

Slow Moving Pedestrians - The Hanseatic League EP: This seems like a random kid in his basement ("32 Monthly Listeners" on Spotify) and he could clearly use singing lessons but I like the songwriting, and he has a nervous innocent vibe to his voice like a Garden State song or Belle and Sebastian. Keep it up kid! 7/10.

4. Digital Heartifacts by L Devine - 8

L Devine has only been gone for a few years, but it feels like a lot longer and I almost forgot that she existed. I'm glad she didn't forget about us though! She takes her usual 80s inspired dancepop and adds in modern elements (trap) and some 90s as well (acoustic guitar here and there.) Comes off feeling like a multi-generational spanning Now Thats What I Call Music!

The Paranoid Style - The Interrogator: Very wordy, "intellectual" style, with kind of a Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses type of energy. I liked stretch of songs in the middle like Styles Make Fights, Client Sales, Are You Loathsome Tonight? but I wanted to like the rest of the album more than I did, Client Sales is actually trying non lyrically with its western score vibe while some of the other songs on the album are too blah in that department. 7/10

5. Vultures by Kanye West and Ty Dollar Sign - 9.5

-We back! I've already listened to it twice since it dropped at 5am. Definitely the best work he has done since going full crazy in the middle of last decade. I felt like Kanye's last few albums were ok, but trying way too hard to prove something to someone. Vultures is having fun. And the beats are all just incredible.

Kanye - Has flashes of sounding like himself again as a rapper but the production is still boring compared to his prime and I don't want to listen to the Ty Dolla guy. 4/10

Usher - I wasn't going to listen to this since it's never going to be my type of music, but I did and I actually think it had some decent songs like the Uptown girl sample (A-Town Girl) and some others like Kissing Strangers and Ruin. Solid 6.5/10.

6. Prelude To Ecstacy by The Last Dinner Party* - 8

-A very operatic alt-rockish sound here. I don't always local the theatrical vocals, but there's definitely a lot of interesting things going on in the instrumentation and lyrics (which are very sexual if you don't tell by the name of the album.) Think Fiona or Florence but with more bangin.

7. Ravel In The Forest by Belle Chen* - 7.7

-I've been listening to very soothing types of music before bed lately to help me sleep. Mostly very chill edm or classical. This falls into the latter category. It's mostly just piano and brown/white noise. But damn does it work! I've fallen asleep to it the past 3 nights. Hard to grade something like that. I wouldn't be jamming out to this while gaming or exercising or travelling or whatever like I do with most albums. Yet music is music and different types have different uses. And because of that, I can actually recommend this to everyone rather than just people like pop, hip-hop, metal, etc....

Spoiler: show
Lizzie No - Halfsies: 9/10
The Paranoid Style - The Interrogator: 7.5/10
Slow Moving Pedestrians - The Hanseatic League EP: 7/10
Usher - Coming Home: 6.5/10
Kevin Gates - The Ceremony 5/10
Green Day - Saviors - 5/10
Kanye West - Vultures 1 - 4/10

Frances Chang - Psychedelic Anxiety: 7/10

Cool "artpop" album! Can see how people into Fiona Apple type stuff would be into it. With that said the songs are so sprawling and weird that all are listenable to chill to, but none achieve real greatness, except for maybe the I Will Survive sample First I Was Afraid, and the last song Rate My Aura is a nice speech type song. Still no candidate for album of February as good as Halfsies for January but I've usually found one interesting one per week.

Shack are you gonna listen to Jlos album? I might. You should also check out Idles. Haven't heard it yet, but they are one of the hot up and coming names in rock right now that isn't super heavy.

8. American Dream by 21 Savage - 5.9

-21 Savage has had some good features recently so I wanted to give his full album a chance. It wasn't amazing, but I'm glad I did just for "Redrum" and the song with Travis. Those are cool. Maybe the one with Doja Cat too. The rest is mostly just the same ole trap beats we hear often, with some songs being fun and some boring.

I'll check out the JLo. I gave Idles a few minutes and I think it's a pass for me.

9. Three Bells by Ty Segall - 8.7

-Ty is a man who releases albums very often. He has several different bands and doesn't seem to ever take a vacation. That being said, Three Bells feels like the true follow-up to his 2018 epic Freedom's Goblin way more than the dozen or so records he has put out in the six years since releasing it. It runs for over an hour and has a really long jam track at the end if you needed any more proof. The album starts a bit differently though, more like a Bends/OK Computer Radiohead sound, especially in the album's top song "Void." While I was enjoying this new direction, longtime Ty fans have no need to to fear, for he goes back to his signature psychadelic garage-rock soon enough. It is groovy and it hits hard. Precisely what I want from this very niche style of music.

JLo's is decent though nothing special. She's really into Affleck. I like Usher's album more for the mainstream pop stars.

10. Slut Pop Miami by Kim Petras -3.6

-Ehhh I did ask for the old Kim Petras back, and this is definitely her trying to be the old Kim Petras. The problem is the word trying though. She didn't need to try to be a slut before, she was just a dirty whore naturally. Sam Smith gave her a taste of the good life and there's no going back I guess. Ah well, at least we got a few great years out of her. And there's always hope she can adapt and put out some new sound that nobody had ever thought of.

11. Wall of Eyes by The Smile - 7.2

-Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood return with their Not-Radiohead band. While their first album under the new name was a bore, this one is a big improvement with the 3-song stretch of "Teleharmonic" , "Read The Room" and "Under Our Pillows" sticking out. Still not peak Radiohead, or even Atoms For Peace, but this is at least close to the lesser Radiohead albums / Thom Yorke solo. I'll take it.

12. Tangk by Idles - 8.1

-I'd given all previous Idles albums to this about a 6ish (3/5 on musicboard.) I dug their style and would have seen them live at a festival or something if the opportunity presented itself. Tangk is a huge step up for me though. It's like their vocal style, lyrics and music finally matched up with each other rather than purposefully clashing like they used to. It's a very Bauhausian style and I'm totally into it. I'm sure longtime superfans disagree and wish they would just stay the same forever, but this is why I like when bands experiment and forgive my favorites even when they put out a turkey. Cause somewhere out there is a new fan (like me in this case) waiting to be won over by an alteration to their sound.

Also, Dancer with LCD Soundsystem is the best Idles song to date and just a ton of fun in general. Need a new LCD album next.

13. This Is Me ... Now by Jennifer Lopez - 5.5

-This album started off really hot. "Can't Get Enough" is a banger ... literally. I also thought she was adapting to the modern sound pretty well with others sounding like TUN era Ariana. I got burnt out in the middle though and the last few songs dragged pretty hard. Still not bad though.
