I only have this distinction because when I think of "band", I think of a brass band, and they have instruments, whereas a "group" is not defined by its term (only that there must be a collection of performers), so I prefer to use this for just teenie bopper singing groups and non-instrumental groups.

When I hear the word "band," I believe my mind goes first to Led Zeppelin or the Who: the traditional sixties/seventies group with a charismatic front-man, a guitarist with mystique, a blues influence, (mostly) original songs, etc.

I also feel that The Beatles, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Beastie Boys, Pink Floyd, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, A Day To Remember, Death Cab For Cutie, LCD Soundsystem, Metric, Oasis, Green Day, Jack White Bands, Nirvana, Incubus, and The Black Keys aren't eligible for some reason. ;)
