Post Re: Democratic Primary 2020
I know. A recent poll had only 53% of his supporters answer that they'd vote for someone other than Bernie. A very alarming number, one that was shrugged off four years ago, but we now know it's true as it likely cost Democrats not only the White House in 2016, but also the chance of a 50/50 Senate (adding PA, MO, WI) and a 5-4 (liberal) Supreme Court.

It's about so much more than the individual candidate. Abstaining to vote for a candidate of the same party, or going as far as voting for for the opposition party, is just ridiculous.

Republicans excel at unifying behind their candidate and that's how they win elections. If Democrats would do the same, they'd not only win elections, they'd win big all the time.

I hope that is the case this year.
2016 was like the election between evils (Trump/Hillary).
This election is basically 4 more years of Trump, or somebody else. Hopefully people don't vote for Trump out of spite or don't vote all at if their #1 isn't the nominee.

So... all the nonviable groups in Des Moines (precinct 47 with 6 of Iowa's 41 delegates) decided to band together in the second round of voting instead of switching to a viable candidate (Warren/Buttigieg/Sanders), and called themselves the "Cory Booker supporters" or something, rallying around a lone girl there to caucus for Booker. In doing so, they broke the 15% threshold (achieving 16.2%) to earn a delegate at the convention. Warren placed first (2 delegates), Buttigieg second (2 delegates), and Sanders third (1 delegate) there for those wondering.

Also, Biden doesn't appear to be doing well. In fact, a fourth place finish is looking possible, maybe even fifth place if Klobuchar manages to edge him out based on the early reports. Caucusing is all about passion and commitment, so this isn't a good test for Biden. Of course, NONE of the precincts have even reported in yet after over 2 hours of caucusing (85% already had four years ago), so it may not be as bad as it appears.

The Guardian has a pretty good live feed:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2020/feb/03/iowa-caucuses-latest-live-news-democrats-bernie-sanders-joe-biden-elizabeth-warren-buttigieg-updates

There seems to be a delay in reporting the final results by Iowa Democrats.

Yeah... first scandal/debacle of the primary season already!

And while accuracy is the most important thing, this will put a damper on whomever wins, and for those that are able to claim a victory of some kind by not being able to deliver a speech tonight... This particularly hurts Warren or Buttegieg if they won, and Klobuchar if she beat out Biden. The initial donation boost from a post-win or overperformance could also be limited as well.

The State of the Union is tomorrow too, so it'll be hard to keep the headlines on any victories.

Campaign representatives have been called to a meeting with the Iowa Democratic Party. I don't believe any sort of results will be released tonight. Apparently... both the newly introduced app they were using, as well as the secured hotline to report votes are both malfunctioning. :|

This definitely appears to be a serious error, and really damages this process. Whomever wins will be called into question for sure.

If tonight leads to a call for an end to caucuses, it will be at least some good news.

Iowa Democrats need to do some PR control to obscure its lack of "quality control" in the reporting mechanism. My advice to them is to release whatever partial results they have on hand right now to feed the news cycle.

What kind of fuckery. It's probably a coincidence, but I wouldn't bet my life that the DNC didn't try to soften Bernie's victory in the press.

I mean, this isn't a scandal. It's just annoying that it's so disorganized.

On the bright side, given the surge of media coverage, Democrats can use this to turn the primary season into a full on voter mobilization drive.

Just an idea: the Iowa Democratic Party and the DNC should hold a press conference to clear up the matter and apologize to the voters and the public, preferably a few minutes ahead of tonight's SOTU.

Hilary Clinton is being blamed. :funny:

The Iowa caucuses are like the golden globes. Technically they don’t mean anything but that momentum swings the minds of indecisive voters.

Per Sanders campaign, with 60% reporting:

Vote shares after realignment
Sanders 29.4%
Buttigieg 24.87%
Warren: 20.65%
Biden: 12.92%
Klobuchar: 11.18%

Per Buttigieg campaign, with 75% reporting:

Total turnout 152,624
Buttigieg First Alignment 32,932 (22%)
Buttigieg Final Alignment 37,667 (25%)
Calculated SDE 480.44 (28%)

It looks neck and neck between Bernie and Pete.
