Are you for or against a $15 minimum wage?

I bet you can guess my stance.

Shocking. You hate that people want to live.

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/20 ... imum-wage/

It should be at $12/hr or so by now. It's not. Because... reasons?

But that's not $15.

I could support it being $9 or $9.50.

We don't need a $15 minimum wage to ensure people live. I think any sort of increase would need to be gradual.

Small businesses could not afford it.

You can also just like, ask for a raise? Or get promoted? Or find a job that requires skills and thus pays a living wage?

Except of course that every time the minimum wage is increased, the economy improves.

People have money, they spend it, businesses do better, we all improve. Plus people don't need food stamps and other forms of welfare because their income has improved.

Every state and city that has increased the minimum wage over the last few years has found that its economy has improved.

I did not say I was against an increase. I'm against one so radical.

And shouldn't to an extent employers be in charge of how much they pay their employees? Are you really just entitled to $15 an hour by virtue of being human?

Wouldn't it be better to focus on creating higher paying jobs than making low wage ones $15? There are a lot of workers like myself whose wages are in addition to other forms of income. Should we mandate they be payed $15 as well,or just the ones who really need them?

Aren't low wage jobs supposed to be for students and retired people, i.e. Those not depending on the wages to live?

"supposed to be"

tons of single parents are forced to work low wage jobs, because that's all they can get. Try raising a family on $9/hr.

Why do they have families before they have jobs that can support them?

And are you saying that raising the minimum wage would eliminate the need for welfare? For some reason, I still feel that there would be plenty of people out of work.

I don't think a guideline like $15 flat is good because not all businesses are the same and costs are all over the place and some businesses might really just not have the money.

$10.80 is the highest minimum wage I think I could support.

Also, a living wage is different in each state, so really minimum wage should be set by state. $15 still is probably not a living wage in Manhattan.

How long would you stick with that $10.80? Would you evaluate every year? Or are you good to go forever now?

It should be at $12/hr or so by now. It's not. Because... reasons?

The reason is because the employee's contribution at $15/hr is not worth the cost of hiring him.

The same principle applies to Adrian Peterson. Nobody is going to pay him $8M per year because his contribution to the team is not worth the cost. Same applies on a smaller scale to minimum wage.

Further, the minimum wage being raised hurts minorities when they might have a job at $9/hr but no job at $10/hr.

Or actually it wouldn't, as they're now being hired under the table for less than the minimum wage the business can't afford.

How does that undermine my argument? That would seem to further it--and I agree with you. And this applies to those working illegally. It is much harder to pay citizens under the table in such a scheme. I.e., minorities that are located within the country legally. If the illegally hired employee doesn't like the pay scheme they are easily fired and won't be heard from again.

Heavily against it. It takes away the flexibility for businesses to do whatever they can to make the most money. Leading to more failed businesses, less expansion, etc. To make up the cost of paying employees more, they have to do things like run a short staff. Or for example say there's a restaurant that's open all day, except it barely makes financial sense to be open during the morning/afternoon. The minimum wage hike may force them to pull the trigger and close in the day and only be open at night. Overall it's incredibly foolish to believe this wouldn't have a huge effect on the job market. You're forcing small businesses to pay thousands more dollars a month to keep the status quo that a lot of them don't have, clearly hard decisions will have to be made

This video makes the argument that the minimum wage increase is great if you're worth 15 dollars an hour, but horrible if you're not worth it. Because if you're not worth the 15 dollars an hour, why should the employer keep you?

There are many reasons an economy grows and dies, as you well know. One thing alone never causes it all.

My point was that the argument that raising it will kill the economy is not supported by any facts. And from what we have seen the economy has improved every time after the minimum wage has been increased. We can argue as to whether the increase helped the economy (I argue that it does) but if you say "It hurts it", well, you're just making stuff up.

I agree that $15 is way too much. Over here in Holland the minimum wage is €8.95 which translates to around $9.50. I'm not saying that's as high as this short of thing should get, but $15 seems excessive. Is the cost of living in the United States so high that you need $600 on a 40 hour workweek?
