Did anyone see her performance on the ABC New Year's Eve broadcast? What was even going on? No vocal track to mime to, right?

Feels a bit legendary, a genuine pop icon having a total Ashlee Simpson-type moment in Times Square.

Hilarious! Live TV is still great.

She powered through it and finished the second song though. You can't say she isn't a professional.

Mariah has been ripped and laughed about miming for years now. It's just that nobody gives a fuck about her anymore so it never made it to big headlines. Doing it (and failing miserably) on New Year's Live TV event just put it into the public eye finally.

You're right - she really didn't do that bad overall, especially when you see the technical screw-up in the context of the full six minute clip below. She's a trooper under pressure and does it all looking so fine.

I had never noticed the OP being so mean-spirited before, he generally seems to be a positive spirit who I didn't expect to take such glee in a performer's technical snafu. Anyone who has been a performer knows that sooner or later the technology will let you down and leave you hanging out there to make the best of it.

I'm more surprised how many people don't know the difference between singing to track and lip synching. Unless you think there was a band hiding under the stage, the music comes from a pre-recorded backing track. The singer performs the full vocals over top of the track, but needs to be able to hear the music in their earpiece or stage monitor, especially in a noisy crowded environment like Times Square on New Year's Eve.
