Was hanging up my laundry, when I heard some coughing-like noises, looked around, found a small squirrel. Something was off, it was breathing kinda heavily, made these coughing sounds (though squirrels do not cough, so it probably has something in its lungs), couldn't climb a wall and didn't attempt to run away from me and let me touch it. Upon closer inspection I saw blood on its nose. Unofrtunately it was midnight here and there is really no emergency service for anything like that in Bonn. So now I have a tiny, apathetic and potentially hurt/ill squirrel sitting in a box with some water and bread (don't have any nuts at home)... I'll bring it to a vet first thing in the morning. I hope he (or she) makes it... |

I remember watching a baby bird with a broken wing die when I was like 7. May your squirrel be more fortunate. |

No, I shouldn't. It belongs into the wild. They will keep it until it is completely healthy, strong and a little older and then probably release it into a forest nearby. I will visit it at the vet before, though. |

Cats will quit eating when they have an ear infection. They will stay in one spot and stop looking for hydration, and this may result in death. You can try mixing their food (soft food only; no crunchy kibble) with an emphasis of a suitable broth with electrolytes, like a soup, to combat the malnourishment. Cats will drink, even when they refuse to eat. But you have to bring it to them, and you might need to coax them affectionately to drink it. That may also be true for squirrels, especially one with a bloody swollen nose (and mouth or jaw). EDIT: I would try feeding the squirrel a fresh, uncooked "soup" made with whatever they normally eat. Maybe a nut butter of acorns fresh ground in a blender and then add the liquid. But I am not an expert and would need to read up on it. |
