Re: Omar Sharif dies at 83
Sad news. Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia are all-time favorites of mine. Doctor Zhivago is in my top five of all-time and a major popular-culture touchstone for me.
Honestly, as an actor, he did not match other superstars of his generation, such as Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Dirk Bogarde, and there are stretches of his career where he did not do much of interest, but he still has a firm place in my heart because of the two David Lean masterpieces to which he greatly contributed.

Re: Omar Sharif dies at 83
I've not seen Doctor Zhivago or Lawrence of Arabia. Perhaps his passing will ignite my interest in them, but probably not. I've only seen one film with him in; The Parole Officer. It's a fantastic film, and it places in my top 200 for sure, and Sharif is good in it. I thought I had seen him in other stuff too, but it seems for the last 30 years he hasn't done anything memorable. Did he just live off his Zhivago and Arabia fame for his entire career?

He is also the male lead in Funny Girl, the enormous Barbra Streisand hit from 1968.
A lot of his films in his prime were big productions then, but not widely remembered today. The Yellow Rolls-Royce, for example, featured a vast cast: Sharif, Ingrid Bergman, Rex Harrison, George C. Scott, Shirley MacLaine, etc. He played in the Sophia Loren-led epic The Fall of the Roman Empire and opposite Richard Harris and Anthony Hopkins in the action movie Juggernaut.

Doctor Zhivago is definitely worth watching. Its one of my all time favourite films as well. I feel compelled to watch it again now. RIP Omar Sharif
