What kind of hacky operation is BoxOffice.Com,no more forum?
The BoxOffice.Com Company is asking for $5000 per year or $400 per month to let users host the forum separately? Which is surprising as I thought that with about 200 visitors per day, the BoxOffice.Com Company would have been OK with funding such a small amount of $5000. So is this is just another example of a company caring more about company profits, over the customers? http://forums.boxoffice.com/index.php?/ ... t-funding/IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: BoxOffice Will No Longer Host the Forums Effective November 30; Donation Campaign for Independent Funding We have some important news today regarding the future of the forums. As of November 30, BoxOffice will not be hosting the forums any longer.

I just joined them. Never knew about it but good to see so many old posters on there. The funding apparently is going well.

No way in hell can a user community support $400 a month, that's just insanity, and I think it's wrong to even ask the community to foot such a bill. I'd turn the keys over to Shawn on this place in a second, he's way more dedicated to running a forum than I am.

As much as I am here and as much as I love KJ... I don't think I'd pay more than... $5? a month for it. That's Netflix money, man.

Eagle Throwing SHADE wrote: Hey everyone, this is Eagle, the owner of WoKJ. I hate that you guys are going through this, yet again. WoKJ was forged from similar fires, it's not fun, and I imagine there's no one more stressed than those responsible for trying to save this place. I've been there, it's tough sledding. I just wanted to jump in with what little insight and advice I can offer. First things first, paying $400 a month for hosting is just plain foolish, and while you guys have a great community, trying to raise $5000 a year to keep the place alive without a major site like BoxOffice feeding you traffic is improbable at best. Three years ago I offered WoKJ as a potential home for your community, but the community opted to go create their own home. I'd say you guys have been very successful over the past three years, and you've certainly crafted a community unlike anywhere else on the web. I'd again like to offer you a home on WoKJ, with the understanding that I would turn the keys over to Shawn and his team to run the forum as they saw fit. I don't have all the answers around what happens to WoKJ's forum posts, what happens to BO's forums posts, but those are discussions I'd like to have with Shawn and others to see if a solution is out there. I'd also like to work with all of you to build a new Box Office Derby in 2015, I think it's something both WoKJ and BO's community would enjoy. I hope you consider making your home at WoKJ. If not, I'll again watch from afar, wishing you the best, and hoping you all get the community you deserve. Best of luck, Eagle

I'm sure our small group would welcome a bigger forum with more activity. But we would need some say with how it's run.

A) They won't be interested B) If they are, we'll talk about options.
What exactly would you be concerned about? My primary concern is the WoKJ history, and how to safeguard that. Merging into BO, separate but locked down, two separate forums. I don't know. But for the long term survival of a box office forum, I think we have to try and pull everyone together, and considering they're much bigger, with a significant sized community, it's only fair they get a significant say.

Re: What kind of hacky operation is BoxOffice.Com,no more fo
Well, I'm sure that would become a discussion. I'm sure they're used to their style of forum, as we are. But this forum is far less cluttered and much easier to navigate. Whether that's due to the smaller size is up for debate. Obviously we would concede a lot of things to what they would want, but losing our core group is not in the best interest of either forum. Lecter/Magnus/xiayun/David/etc. We've been around the block and have valuable input.
But yeah, it probably won't happen. They'll try to keep people paying for their forum, they'll lose casual users and will eventually struggle/die.

Re: What kind of hacky operation is BoxOffice.Com,no more fo
Pretty much. Really, there can be two WoKJ forums until we figure the mess out. We can leave this one, host their forum, and both communities can stay apart until (if) we figure out how to merge them. That's the least of my worries.

I mean, it's a good deal. A win-win for both parties for the long term health of two box office communities. They get stability and awesomeness, and we get more people.

Re: What kind of hacky operation is BoxOffice.Com,no more fo
I ended up proposing that they'd be the forum on Box Office Seer, the forums would remain separate. They don't seem interested, I get the feeling that as long as their members are willing to pay, they'll stay on their own.
I think it's unfair to the users to have to pay when they could just come to Seer and pay nothing, but they've built a pretty big forum over there, so what the heck do I know.

That being said, as a very long-time poster here, I think, umm, "turning over the keys" to someone who hasn't been dealing with WOKJ before seems too much too quick. But the discussion seems to be of hypothetical value anyway.

Re: What kind of hacky operation is BoxOffice.Com,no more fo
Close to $5,000 per year to maintain a forum's format and history from its posts, user likes, page views, etc.. just seems way too much to me. Even if the community is willing to pay the cost, that money could be put toward some way more important and valuable things.
Honestly, I feel they'd be better off simply taking the initial donations (now over $1,100) to start a new forum that would be way more cost friendly.
As for us... We have 45-50 regular posters here (closer to 60 if you count weekly posters vs daily posters). That number was probably over 100 at some point, but 50 or so regulars is keeping WOKJ interesting most of the time. In fact, it feels like to me that this past year has seen more forum activity than the past few.
The Water Cooler section of the forum is practically dead now, but if I'm correct, the overwhelming majority of the members here are older than those on Boxoffice.com. All of us have day-to-day responsibilities now; and less time to discuss matters outside of our common interest (movies).

Re: What kind of hacky operation is BoxOffice.Com,no more fo
Lecter, you're right, it was poor wording. I was trying to relay that they'd be able to have control of their home. It evolved into their forum on one site, WoKJ unchanged.
Corpse, I agree the cost is stupid. I told them if they moved it to Seer there'd be no cost, they declined. It baffels me, I get the feeling theyre not my biggest fans. I haven't always been a fan of how they've chosen to do things, they've certainly made it impossible for me to promote things like Seer to their members, which has been frustrating since I just wanted to make something people would enjoy.

Okay, I don't really know him but since you described Sean Salisbury to a tee there, I thought you might have confused them. No swearing rules are a major no-go.
