Staying on life support like that seemed like a bad sign. I figured she would live well into her 90s for some reason. Seems almost too soon, even at 81. I'm glad that Jimmy Fallon did something right in allowing her to come back to The Tonight Show after being banned by Johnny Carson (a banning that Jay Leno oddly upheld). It obviously meant a lot to her to be asked back after all those years. Also a rare feat to be as relevant as she was even at 81. Maybe not as popular or active as she was in a few decades, but she was still a household name. |

Wow. That's a shock. I know she looked old and looked like death already for the last 20 years, but I never thought she would actually die. She seemed to just keep going and going with her humour and energy. |

I was hot and cold with her comedy, but there's no denying she was an icon and a legend. RIP. |

Her comedy was largely shit. She was obviously trying too hard to be shocking and daring and get in the tabloids. She wasn't a legend, but she was somewhat of a female icon. |

Her longevity is the bigger story. She made herself accessible to new generations. So many stars that die after 70 have long since faded from the spotlight. She was arguably as well-known now as she was in her prime. If not she at least did a great job and was only hindered by age which is one of the major detractors in Hollywood. She didn't achieve the same second wind in her career as Betty White, but I don't think she really ever had any downtime either. |
