We went up to Oklahoma during my last visit to the US, to meet up with some people we know up there, and there were a lot of long roads that go into the middle of nowhere. After crossing the border between Texas and Oklahoma and moving past the casinos they'd set up there to take advantage of the fact gambling is illegal in Texas, the highway was a long road that went into the middle of nowhere basically until you reached Oklahoma City, several hours in. It was kind of cool to see a place so very rural, at least for someone from a densely packed country like the Netherlands, but it got boring after a while too. Two of my friends lived in a place so rural that they didn't have actual internet (thank god for unlimited data plans on their phones), phone service was just not available in some areas, and the town nearest to them looked like it had more trucks than people. We drove through there on our way up to OKC, needing gas, and were like "Let's just keep going and stop somewhere that looks less like we'll get murdered there." It was the sort of place you'd see in a horror movie, where the gas attendant tricks you into taking a "shortcut" that ends with you being eaten by an incestuous clan of hillbillies. |
