I hope you enjoy going through customs, it's going to take a while on your first visit.
I'm not really big on travelling; I don't particularly enjoy airplane travel or spending money on things that don't get me something tangible. People always go "But the memories!" when I inform them I'd rather not go on vacation, and that just doesn't do it for me.
I've only been to the following:
Austria Belgium Germany Luxemburg Spain United Kingdom United States

Why is that?
I've just been authorized for the ESTA, so they don't really need to do much checking in-person. They can do it all pre-arrival. Unless you mean for physical checks. I'm not having anyone check my ass!!!

I was authorised for an ESTA too, and I was still in customs for two hours on my first visit. They still needed to take thumb prints and such, as well as ask the standard questions upon entering the country. Most of the time was waiting though, since many American airports have a lot of incoming international flights and even only two/three planes worth of (mostly) foreigners will mean a lot of waiting time since they'll all be funnelled into the same customs area.
The second time was a lot quicker for me, because when you're a returning visitor you get a separate line (either right away or after a sort of preliminary check) that's a lot shorter. The first time though... ugh, I had to stand for way too long without any sort of entertainment (they advised against browsing on your phone) and missed my flight because of it.
If you've got a layover, I hope you made sure you have plenty of time. Even with my shorter customs line after having visited before, I wouldn't plan any flights without at least two hours to get from plane to plane.
I would also highly advise you to elbow your way past people on your way through the plane so you're further ahead in line.
U.S. - Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Illinois, Maine, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., Louisiana
Probably heading to Hawaii sometime in the next year. Got a passport to go abroad, most likely going to start with Canada and Mexico first.

Thanks the lesser evil. I now think my US experience is going to be a fucking nightmare. My boss booked the flights (he's been there before) and we have not much time between flights.

With your permanent residence being China a full body cavity search is not unlikely.

My permanent residence is in the UK. But even if it was in China, I don't remember any Chinese terrorists attacking the USA.

Prepare yourself for something unlike anywhere else in the world. My first days on the Strip just felt surreal despite it being my 5th visit to the States.

Algren is making the same trip (Dallas > Las Vegas) I did earlier this year. ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME ALGREN?
And yeah, Vegas is... an unusual place. I felt like I was being smacked in the face by tourism and gambling, and visiting bars where people smoke was weird after it being illegal here in Holland for so long. Also, everything was really fucking expensive. >.>

Re: How many countries have you visited?
I love Vegas but I always want to get the hell out of there by, like, day 3 on every trip I've gone.
I can't believe I'm currently in the same country as Algren. WORLDS ARE COLLIDING.
This is my quintessential Vegas song, for what it's worth. I blast it every time I arrive.

Re: How many countries have you visited?
It's so fucking expensive here. I have just $280 to my name, and I'm afraid to do anything. Then the silent killer ... the 8.15% sales tax!!!
It is a strange place, but I'm really not that impressed. It's as fake as Macau. I walked up and down the strip last night, which was cool, but the Bellagio fountain was not on and despite there being so many fucking signs and lights, you cannot find anything! I was looking for a cinema or a supermarket (basically something that isn't a casino).
And yeah, I agree, smoking indoors is fucking disgusting. Las Vegas feels like a time warp town, which is kind of how they want it to feel I guess.

I think you have to take an Uber if you want to get to a movie theater, I don't even remember there being any on the Strip.
Regarding the having no money aspect...they'll bring you free drinks in the casinos, even if you're just sitting at the penny slots. You're supposed to tip though.

Re: How many countries have you visited?
I wouldn't know how to. I'll just take a taxi tomorrow and watch a few films at the same time. The taxi will be $40 return, so I have to make it worth my while. Experiencing the cinema in the USA is my version of people going to gamble or going to the Empire State Building, so I don't mind spending a bit extra.
