Who's on LinkedIn?

I find it funny how mostly everyone on LinkedIn is a manager, or a director, or some other form of lying about the true nature of their position.

Why can't people tell the truth?

Yeah I'm on it. Its great for networking, searching for leads etc.

I'd say the majority of the people I know on it provide legit job titles and info (some embellish offcourse). But generally you tend to use it more if you are a manager or director.

But that's also my point. Everyone can say they are a manager or a director. They just twist their job title to make it sound more successful. A bin man can be a waste relocation manager; a prostitute can be a human resources manager; a purchasing assistant can be a material logistics manager etc. etc.

It's just all kinds of bullshit. I suppose it's no different than lying on a CV (which everyone apart from me does), but because LinkedIn is public, it just narks me off. If you're ashamed and embarrassed with what you do for a living, work to change it, don't just lie about it.

I can't stand ridiculous job titles either. However, the lists of responsibilities and accomplishments get me even more on year-end review - specifically any phrases with "allocation" or "procurement." Basically anything that makes a straight-forward task sound 10x more fancy/complicated.

Yeah I'm a manager and consultant.

But you are right - I haven't filled in details of each of my past and current roles yet have had dozens of recruiters contact me based on my job titles alone. This just proves that titles can even mislead recruiters but in such cases you need to be able to back it up.

I review many resumes for clients or for myself and the amount of bullshit on them is cringe worthy but also hilarious. Fancy words that aren't even used in the correct context is good entertainment :funny:

In my industry, procurement is pretty complicated. Try purchasing something from a small business that you want to in-turn sell to the government as part of an assembly. Blah.

I signed-up for LinkedIn recently since I changed jobs and wanted an easy way to keep track of people that were not Facebook appropriate, but I kinda feel like deleting it since it simply gives the LinkedIn creators access to vast networks across all industries. Plus they e-mail me crap constantly.

True, in some cases it does actually mean something. Others, such "in charge of procurement of strategic resources," might be used when it was really just the purchase of a whiteboard.
