Quote:
The first group of people to have the chance of starting a new colony on Mars by 2023 have been selected.

Mars One picked 1,058 people to progress to the next round in its search for humans who want to be the first to live, and die, on the Red Planet.

The hopefuls, who are all over the age of 18, will be shortlisted into a final group of 40 before training starts in 2018.

More than 200,000 people applied for a one-way ticket to Mars in a bid to become one of the first colonists, who are expected to settle on the planet by 2023.

A total of 297 of the candidates to make the first cut are from the U.S. while 75 are Canadian.

India was the next best represented country with 62 candidates, followed by Russia with 52, although the project originally set out to source applicants from 107 different countries.

Gillian Finnerty, 21, from the University of Sheffield and Dannielle Potter, 29, from Manchester University are among the Britons who made the first cut.

Almost 77 per cent of the people selected are employed, while 15 per cent are still at school, CBS reported.

Some 357 people are not yet 25, while 415 have not yet celebrated their 35th birthday.

The oldest person to make it to the next round is 81, which means they will be 90 when the settlement lands.

Each was asked to explain why they would leave behind their loved ones and revealed what they would take in their suitcase if they were chosen to be shortlisted.

Bas Landorp, co-founder of the Mars One project, said the candidates are the first tangible glimpse of what a new human settlement will look like.

‘We’re extremely appreciative and impressed with the sheer number of people who submitted their applications,’ he said.

Positively fascinating. You have to commend these people for their sacrifice because damn, I wouldn't been spotted ten feet within a sign up form for this suicide mission*.

* - suicide not in the traditional sense, but rather, to give up everything in one's life for the betterment of science and possibly the human race.

* Also, guaranteed death, AKA suicide.

We're all guaranteed death. They're not signing up to die, they're signing up to live.

To be fair, I'd go to Mars if Clooney went with me.

What if Margot Robbie was your personal escort?

They'd have someone else for that.

Just as long as she can repair MY emergency air supply system.

Hhmm. This is actually a death mission because they won't be colonizing anything. They'll just be stuck in space relaying information back until their bodies or the machines give out. Astronauts still have to rotate back to earth after a certain length of time in space. Maybe they can get an updated view of that face on Mars or something. I'd like to see that with some new technology.

Well, astronauts rotate back because of radiation exposure and muscle atrophy. They'll do what they can to protect from radiation via shields, and they'll workout during the voyage to deal with muscle atrophy. Once they reach Mars, they will be weaker, but Mars has 1/3rd the gravity of Earth, so oddly enough their remaining strength will be sufficient.

They're not going there just to play cards, they're going to build a colony. Supply drops will have preceded their voyage, which will include habitats and life support systems. A rover will build, assemble, and connect the outposts prior to the arrival of the settlers. Then they'll start the process of creating a habitable and sustainable society on Mars.

What happened to the moon? This is awesome, I totally would have signed up if I heard of it. If this really does happen in 9 years, man that'll be cool

Is "vye" an alternative spelling for "vie" or am I missing some clever wordplay?

Post subject:  Re: People vye to leave Earth, go to Mars

The moon isn't as habitable as Mars. Mars has the hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen needed. There's also the potential for wind power, which doesn't exist on the moon. Mars also has ice, which will be critical as their food supply will be all hydroponically grown.

The biggest thing is the atmosphere of Mars. It'll deflect radiation and allow for crops to actually grow on the surface, something that'd be near impossible on the moon.

Ha ha, no. I have just misspelled the word for a long time, it seems. Embarrassing. ;)

That's brave to own up. Nobody else on WOKJ would do that. They would just ignore Caius' comment of go to great lengths to prove that that is indeed the correct spelling. Good man, David.

I would actually love to go. But I'd rather start a family here.

If I was a guy like Magnus, I'd be all over this shit.

But again, I would hope to be eaten by a Martian.
