You know the drill. Here's last year's thread.

Should everyone in The Place Beyond the Pines be categorized as supporting?

I could live with that.

The Weinstein Company has promoted Steve Coogan as a supporting actor in Philomena, but I believe this borders on category fraud. I would say he is a co-lead alongside Judi Dench.

Definitely.

Another one:

Daniel Brühl in Rush - I say Lead.

Aren't the comedy and horror categories entirely open?

I am surprised you are not championing This Is the End.

Will Forte in Nebraska - supporting or lead? I am leaning strongly towards lead.

I also lean toward lead. The film is ultimately his journey as much as the father's, if not more. I understand why Paramount has positioned him otherwise (so as to not compete with Bruce Dern and because the lead category is often far more competitive), but I do not believe it reflects the actual content of the film. In my opinion, Stacy Keach and Bob Odenkirk are the main supporting actors in Nebraska.

Lead it is, then.

What about Matthew McConaughey in Mud?

Supporting, in my opinion. Tye Sheridan is the lead.

MM is the lead in Mud.

Hemsworth is joint lead with Bruhl in Rush.

I don't think anyone questions Hemsworth being lead as well.

MM in Mud is a curious case. I'd like to hear more thoughts. I'm fine either way.

Image

Here's all the proof you need.

1. Huge McConaughey image on the poster.
2. First name in the list of names: McConaughey.
3. Quote saying how fantastic McConaughey's performance is.
4. The films' title is McConaughey's character name.
5. The plot revolves around McConaughey. He's the fugitive that the police are trying to catch. The boys are merely a vehicle for us to meet McConaughey.
6. Everything that happens in the film is because of what McConaughey wants or needs. If it wasn't Sheridan, it would be some other schmuck. But McConaughey would remain. He's the point of the whole film.

The poster is of almost no significance. Of course it will focus on the A-list male star.

But the film itself, in my opinion, is Ellis' (Tye Sheridan) story first and foremost. McConaughey's Mud is an adult influence, a type of beacon, during his coming-of-age summer, similar to the function of the slave Jim in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

This is just my two cents. The film's fans should just include him where they see fit.

As it is, Mud will only feature in the Best Breakthrough of the Year category for me, so it's not going to bother me too much where you decide he best be placed.

Lecter, can I include Only God Forgives in the Foreign-language category?
There's a lot of Thai in there.

I see where you're comng from, but no, sorry. Even if I aid yes, you'd probably still be the only one to do so.

Ok, well I'll only be including 4 for that category then.
